If Lock chat is missing, the conversation may be ineligible or the feature may not have reached your account yet. If a locked conversation seems to have disappeared, look under Projects > Locked chats rather than regular history or search. A rejected PIN can be a temporary lockout from failed attempts; resetting a forgotten PIN is a last resort because it permanently deletes the locked chats and any memories or files protected only by that PIN.
Start with the symptom
Use the symptom that matches what you see. The likely cause determines whether you should wait for availability, change where you look, or troubleshoot the browser or app.

Why Lock chat may be missing
The feature is still rolling out
OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Locked chats are rolling out gradually.” Availability can therefore differ between two accounts, browsers, phones, or desktop installations even when they use the same ChatGPT plan. A missing menu item does not by itself mean that the conversation was deleted.

The conversation is not eligible
Locking is selective. The following conversation types cannot be locked:
- Temporary chats
- Archived chats
- Group chats
- Chats with a shared link
- Scheduled-task chats
- Meeting-recording chats
- Background-task chats
- Certain project-source chats
- Codex conversations
- Local Work conversations
Healthcare has additional restrictions. A project can contain both eligible and ineligible material, so test the command on a standard, non-temporary one-to-one chat rather than assuming that every project conversation supports locking.
Use the supported locking flow
When the account and chat qualify, the lock command is in the conversation’s own menu.

- Open its ••• menu.
- Select Lock chat.
- Confirm the action when prompted.
- Create or enter the four-digit account PIN.
On supported mobile devices, device authentication may also be available. That is an additional way to authenticate on the device; the account still uses the four-digit PIN for the lock feature.

If the menu closes, the confirmation never appears, or the PIN screen does not load, treat it as an unresponsive-control problem and follow the browser or app checks below. Do not repeatedly submit an uncertain PIN: too many incorrect attempts temporarily disable access until the retry period ends.
Find a chat after it has been locked
Use the locked-chat location
After locking, the conversation is intentionally removed from ordinary history and regular conversation search. Open Projects > Locked chats, authenticate, and select the conversation. Looking only in the normal sidebar or using the global conversation search can make a healthy locked chat appear missing.
Allow for indexing and stale views
Sidebar and search updates may not be immediate. An already-open browser tab or another device can continue showing an old title or an old list until it refreshes. Refresh the page or reopen the app, then return to Projects > Locked chats. Check that you are signed in to the same account and workspace in which the chat was locked; a different account or workspace has a different conversation list.
Fix an unresponsive Lock chat control
If an eligible chat shows Lock chat but the control does not respond, work from the least disruptive checks to the more invasive ones. Test the lock flow again after each step.

- Refresh the current view. Reload the page or force-close and reopen the mobile or desktop app. A hard reload can replace an outdated web session.
- Sign out and back in. This renews the account session and can correct a stale permissions state. Confirm that the account and workspace are the intended ones after signing back in.
- Clear site data or cookies. Remove the ChatGPT site’s stored data, restart the browser, and sign in again. This can resolve damaged cached scripts, but it may also sign you out and remove local preferences.
- Try a private window. A private or incognito window starts without most stored site data and many extensions. If locking works there, the regular profile is the likely source of the problem.
- Try another browser or device. Test a current browser, the supported mobile app, or the new macOS or Windows desktop surface. A result that differs by surface helps separate an account problem from a local installation problem.
- Temporarily disable interfering tools. Privacy and security extensions, content blockers, VPNs, proxies, and secure-DNS tools can block authentication or the request that saves the lock state. Disable them briefly for a controlled test, then restore them and allow the required ChatGPT site functions if that resolves the issue.
- Change networks. Test a trusted alternate connection, such as mobile data instead of a filtered office or school network. Network filtering can leave the page visible while blocking the action behind the menu.
- Check service status. Review status.openai.com for an OpenAI incident affecting sign-in, conversations, projects, or the ChatGPT web and app surfaces. If an incident is active, retry after service is restored.
These checks address a control that is present but fails to complete. They cannot enable a feature that has not yet rolled out or make an ineligible chat eligible.
When the PIN is rejected
Distinguish a temporary attempt lockout
The lock uses a four-digit account PIN. A typo or an old PIN can produce a rejection; repeated incorrect attempts can temporarily disable access until the retry period ends. Stop guessing once you are unsure of the digits. Record the exact PIN you normally use for this account, wait for the retry period to finish, and try once carefully from the locked-chat authentication screen.
Changing browsers or clearing cookies does not bypass an account-level retry period. Those actions are useful for a broken screen, not for an intentionally enforced attempt limit.
Forgotten PIN: understand the destructive reset
If you cannot remember the PIN, the reset option is not a recovery mechanism for the existing protected content. Resetting the forgotten PIN permanently deletes:

- Files protected only by the previous PIN
The deletion cannot be undone, and OpenAI Support cannot recover that content. Treat reset as the final choice only when losing those conversations, memories, and files is acceptable. If the content matters, do not keep experimenting with PINs or reset while hoping the old chats will reappear.

Confirm the account and workspace
Sign out and check the account identifier before signing back in. If you use more than one workspace, select the workspace where the conversation was created. Locked chats are not a universal list shared across accounts or workspaces.
Check the correct project path
Navigate to Projects > Locked chats and complete authentication. Do not rely on the regular sidebar, archived-chat list, or ordinary conversation search to locate a locked conversation.

Close stale tabs and reopen the app on other devices. A title or list can remain outdated while the account state has already changed. After refreshing, check the locked-chat list again rather than searching the normal history.

Consider eligibility changes
If the conversation is temporary, archived, shared, a group chat, tied to a scheduled or background task, a meeting recording, a project source, a Codex conversation, or a local Work conversation, it cannot be locked through this feature. Healthcare conversations can have extra limitations. In those cases, the missing lock command is expected behavior, not evidence that the chat was lost.
Escalate a failure that survives cross-device testing
Contact OpenAI Support when the account appears eligible, the feature is available on the surface you are using, and the same failure occurs after testing more than one browser or device and, when possible, another network. Include enough diagnostic detail for Support to correlate the failed request:
- The account plan and workspace, without sending your password or PIN
- The surface and version used: web, iOS, Android, macOS, or Windows
- The exact time and time zone of each failure
- Whether Lock chat is missing, unresponsive, or followed by an error
- The model used in the conversation, if relevant to the failure
- The conversation URL or conversation ID, while avoiding sensitive content in the ticket
- A HAR file from the browser session
- Browser-console errors and the browser version
- Whether private browsing, another browser, another device, and another network changed the result
A HAR file and console log can contain sensitive URLs or data. Review and redact secrets before sharing them, and follow Support’s upload instructions. Providing timestamps and the exact conversation identifier is more useful than sending repeated screenshots of the same menu.

Decision checklist
- No menu item: verify gradual rollout, supported plan and surface, then check whether the chat type is eligible.
- Menu item does nothing: refresh, renew the session, test private browsing, clear site data, try another browser or device, disable interfering network tools, and check service status.
- PIN rejected: distinguish a mistyped PIN from a temporary failed-attempt lockout; stop repeated guesses.
- Chat not visible: authenticate under Projects > Locked chats; regular history and search intentionally omit locked chats, and indexing can be delayed.
- PIN forgotten: reset only after accepting permanent deletion of locked chats and content protected solely by the old PIN.
- Failure everywhere: collect HAR and console diagnostics, timestamps, model, and conversation URL or ID before contacting Support.
Key points to remember
A missing Lock chat command most often reflects rollout timing or chat eligibility, not deletion. A locked conversation is supposed to disappear from ordinary history and search and is retrieved through Projects > Locked chats. The lock requires a four-digit account PIN, and supported mobile devices may offer device authentication as well. Browser, extension, VPN, network, and service-status checks are appropriate when the control is visible but unresponsive. PIN reset is destructive and should be reserved for cases where permanent loss of the protected content is acceptable.
