Charter Space announced a $5 million seed round on September 30, 2026, led by Crystal Venture Partners. The company says the financing brings its total raised to $8 million and will fund growth in distribution, sales, and insurance products for the space industry.
Who led the round, and how much has Charter Space raised?
Crystal Venture Partners led the oversubscribed seed round, according to Charter Space’s September 30, 2026 announcement. QED, Blank Ventures, Gaingels, Hustle Fund, and other investors also participated. Charter says the $5 million seed brings its cumulative funding to $8 million, including a prior $3 million pre-seed.
What does Charter Space do?
Charter describes itself as a specialist insurance brokerage for the space industry. It says it launched the Charter Interplanetary Risk Corporation (CIRC), a nationally licensed insurance brokerage, in May 2026. The company says it serves more than 50 businesses in the U.S. space and defense industrial base.
Charter’s announcement describes coverage needs across several stages of a mission: pre-launch transport and testing, launch, and post-separation operations. It also names newer or expanding areas it intends to address, including in-space servicing, space-based nuclear power, and lunar in-space resource utilization. The release does not provide policy wording, limits, exclusions, underwriting requirements, or insurer-capacity details, so it is not enough to compare specific policies or determine what a customer’s mission would qualify for.

What does the company say about its backlog?
Charter reports a backlog representing more than $35 million in gross written premiums. That is a company-reported backlog figure, not realized revenue or premiums independently verified in the announcement; the release also does not define the period covered by the backlog.
How does Charter plan to use the funding?
The company says it will use the new capital to expand distribution, grow sales, and scale its insurance products. The announcement identifies in-space servicing, space-based nuclear power, and lunar resource-utilization missions as areas of product expansion, while describing coverage across pre-launch, launch, and post-separation phases.

Charter also says it has run technology pilots with space companies and research organizations, but the release does not name those organizations or describe the pilots’ results.

The financing announcement establishes what Charter says it raised, which investors it named, and how it plans to deploy the capital. Its customer count, backlog, and pilot activity are company disclosures rather than independently audited operating results in the release. It does not establish Charter’s market share, policy availability for a particular mission, or the terms and capacity of coverage that customers can obtain.
