To raise money for charity on a livestream without donations passing through you, use a fundraising tool or the charity’s own donation system that names the beneficiary and routes contributions to it. Before announcing the event, confirm the charity is eligible and selectable, check what donors will see, and explain clearly which payments are charitable contributions and which are ordinary tips, subscriptions, Bits, or memberships.
Choose a cause your audience can understand—and verify the beneficiary
Start with an issue that has a credible connection to you or your community. Decide whether the event calls for a local, national, or international organization, then look up the specific charity in the fundraising platform you intend to use. Read the organization’s own description and any campaign requirements before publishing. There is no established basis for saying one cause will necessarily raise more than another.
Availability depends on the platform’s eligibility rules. Twitch’s charity tool draws from PayPal Giving Fund’s database, and Twitch says an organization needs a PayPal Giving Fund profile to appear. YouTube Giving requires eligible recipients to be US-registered 501(c)(3) public charities that opt into online fundraising and follow YouTube policies; private foundations are not currently supported. The American Red Cross’s Tiltify guide demonstrates searching for and selecting the Red Cross as a beneficiary. Verify the current listing and requirements on the platform before you announce your fundraiser.
Choose a donation route that makes the money flow clear
A charitable contribution through a fundraising route is not the same as a viewer paying you and you later deciding to donate some of your proceeds. Twitch says Bits and subscriptions do not directly donate to charity. Its guidance also cautions that ordinary contributions later donated by a streamer are not donations made through Twitch’s charity tool. For a direct charitable route, use Twitch Charity, another platform that allows donations to a charity, or the charity’s own fundraising system. Explain the distinction whenever you mention other monetization during the event.

Check the beneficiary, donor experience, geographic support, receipt arrangements where relevant, and distribution terms before choosing. Platform policies and payout details can change, so verify them close to the event.

These routes are not interchangeable: choose the one that supports your beneficiary, audience, and desired payment flow. The comparison reflects official platform or charity documentation, not hands-on testing. Streamlabs reported in an April 25, 2025 help article that over $75 million had been raised on Twitch for various organizations since 2012, and that over $500,000 had been raised through its charity platform at the time of that article. Those are provider-reported figures, not independently verified fundraising estimates.

Set up the fundraiser before you promote it
- Verify the charity. Confirm that the named organization is selectable in your chosen tool. Read its own guidance and campaign terms. If it is unavailable in your first choice, check another legitimate fundraising route rather than substituting an unrelated beneficiary.
- Confirm the donation flow. Check what donors see, who receives the money, how receipts work where relevant, and whether the route supports viewers in the places your audience lives.
- Create the campaign. Use a clear title and description, add the event date, and set an initial goal that you can explain. Streamlabs and the Red Cross’s Tiltify guide describe campaign fields of this kind.
- Make the donation link easy to find. Put the campaign or donation link where viewers can access it during the stream, and state plainly which organization receives contributions. The Red Cross guide documents campaign and donation links; Streamlabs describes a public charity tip page.
- Add visual aids only when useful. A progress or donor overlay, goal display, or alert can help viewers follow the campaign. Tiltify’s Red Cross guide describes overlays and integrations, and Streamlabs documents linking a campaign to alerts. Check the setup and compatibility with your streaming and alert software.
- Use accurate language while live. Distinguish donations made through the charity route from your ordinary platform monetization. Do not say Bits, subscriptions, tips, or memberships go directly to charity unless the selected tool actually routes them that way.
Be precise about fees, receipts, and payout timing
Do not assume that similar-looking donation buttons use the same payment or distribution arrangement. YouTube’s help FAQ describes its Network for Good arrangement, including the stated 100% contribution to the nonprofit, YouTube’s payment of transaction fees, Network for Good’s exclusive legal control once funds are collected, and its typical monthly disbursement schedule—with amounts under $10 disbursed annually. For Twitch Charity, Twitch’s December 7, 2022 blog described donations going to PayPal Giving Fund and being granted to the recommended charity under its policies; check current terms rather than treating that dated post as a present-day promise. For Tiltify, Streamlabs Charity, or a charity’s own system, review the current campaign and donation terms directly.

- Name the beneficiary and link to the campaign page before the event.
- Describe whether the donation route sends contributions to the charity or whether viewers are paying you and you may donate proceeds later.
- Keep ordinary creator monetization distinct from the charity fundraiser in overlays, spoken calls to action, and descriptions.
- Check the beneficiary listing, geographic availability, platform features, fee treatment, and payout details again shortly before going live.
There is no established independent estimate of typical livestream charity proceeds, or of how much overlays, goals, or incentives change donations. Avoid promising a fundraising total or suggesting that a particular tactic guarantees higher contributions.
