Character.AI is not a risk-free service for teenagers, but its current under-18 product is more restricted than many older articles suggest. Character.AI’s July 2026 age-assurance documentation describes verified under-18 accounts as a reading-only experience: users can browse some Characters, but character chat is unavailable. Adults retain full chat access. The company also says teen accounts receive stricter classifiers, blocked violating inputs, and a narrower Character selection. Those controls can reduce exposure, not guarantee safety. Independent guidance remains more cautious: Australia’s eSafety Commissioner warns that young people may still encounter age-inappropriate content, and Common Sense Media’s April 2025 assessment recommended against use by anyone under 18. Parents should treat Character.AI as entertainment and roleplay—not a therapist, crisis counselor, trusted adviser, or private diary—and review the actual account experience, privacy settings, and family rules together.
What is the current Character.AI experience for under-18 users?
According to Character.AI’s July 2026 age-assurance documentation, an account identified as under 18 is placed in an Under-18 experience with reading mode and no character chat. That is a major change from older coverage that described teenagers having open-ended conversations with Characters. Character.AI announced the removal of open-ended chat for under-18 users on October 29, 2025, with the change beginning November 24, 2025 and rolling out in other countries over subsequent months.
Availability can still depend on country, rollout status, account signals, and future policy changes. The company’s older Safety Center says users must be at least 13, or at least 16 in Europe. Treat that as baseline account-age language, not proof that every teenager receives the same features. The newer age-assurance documentation is the better description of the current under-18 product, but parents should check what appears on the child’s account rather than relying on an old article or a verbal description.

| Can an under-18 user chat with a Character? | The Under-18 experience is described as reading mode with character chat unavailable. | Do not assume a teen can use the same chat features as an adult account; regional rollout may differ. |

| Can a parent see conversations? | Parental Insights reports activity patterns, not message content. | A quiet weekly report is not evidence that every interaction was safe. |
Is Character.AI safe for teenagers?
The most accurate answer is “safer than the unrestricted experience, but not reliably safe.” The product now applies additional limits to verified under-18 accounts, yet a moderated AI-character platform can still produce incorrect, manipulative, sexualized, self-harm-related, or otherwise inappropriate material. Character.AI says its automated moderation tools are evolving; it does not present them as an independent safety certification.

Independent advice is more conservative than the company’s safety framing. In guidance current to this topic, the Australian eSafety Commissioner says there is a risk that young people could encounter age-inappropriate content. Common Sense Media’s April 2025 review stated, “We do not recommend use of Character.AI for those under age 18.” That assessment predates Character.AI’s later removal of under-18 open-ended chat, so it should be labeled with its date rather than presented as a description of today’s exact interface. It remains useful context: a policy change can reduce exposure without demonstrating that all risks have disappeared.
No reliable independent statistic establishes how often Character.AI produces harmful replies, how accurate its classifiers are, or what outcomes teens experience. Avoid interpreting the absence of a reported incident count as proof of safety. The practical standard for families is whether the remaining features fit the child’s age, judgment, and ability to seek help from a real person.
How does Character.AI moderate teen content?
Character.AI describes several layers rather than one single filter. For under-18 users, the company says it uses more conservative classifiers, detects and intervenes on user inputs, filters sensitive or mature Characters, and applies automated tools intended to block violating material. Users can report content, and a Trust & Safety operation includes internal personnel, contracted moderators, and vendors.

- Output and Character controls: sensitive or mature Characters and responses are subject to filtering and removal rules.
- Human escalation: reports can be reviewed through the Trust & Safety process, although review timing and outcomes are not guaranteed.
- Age-specific settings: the under-18 experience is intended to use stricter classifiers and a smaller Character set than adult access.
“Moderated” means the service applies controls and enforcement; it does not mean every unsafe exchange is caught before a teenager sees it. Classifiers can miss context, react inconsistently to coded language, or block a benign request while allowing a risky one. A Character that sounds caring may still give fabricated medical advice, encourage secrecy, or respond poorly to a crisis. Parents should teach teens to stop an interaction and report it when a Character crosses a boundary rather than trying to test how far the filter will go.

Does Character.AI monitor teen chats, and can parents read them?
Character.AI’s Parental Insights feature is an activity-summary tool, not message-level supervision. The teen initiates the process and invites one or more parents or guardians. A weekly report can show average daily time, the Characters used most often, time spent with each Character, and C.AI+ subscription status. It does not include the text of chats.
That design can support a conversation about sleep, schoolwork, relationships, and recurring Characters without giving a parent a transcript. It also creates a clear limit: a report showing little time or ordinary Character names cannot prove that every exchange was harmless. Parents should agree in advance what the summaries are for, how they will discuss them, and what will happen if a safety concern appears. If a teen does not invite a parent, Parental Insights does not provide a hidden back door to conversation content.
What personal data does Character.AI collect?
Character.AI’s privacy summary says it collects information supplied when an account is created or used, data generated through interactions such as usage data and IP address, and information from connected third-party services. The company says these data support operating the service, customer support, personalization, security, model improvement, and legal compliance.

Its March 2026 training-data documentation says its generative-AI systems use publicly available data, user text and interaction data, internally generated safety-training, engineering-testing and red-teaming data, synthetic data, and data obtained from third parties through commercial agreements. The document says collection and use for model development began in 2021.

| Data or setting | What the documentation indicates | Safer family rule |
|---|---|---|
| Account and usage information | Account details, usage information and IP address may be collected to operate and secure the service. | Use the minimum account information needed; review privacy settings periodically. |
| Chat text and interactions | User text and interaction data are described as inputs to model development and post-training, subject to regional disclosures and controls. | Assume anything typed could be processed; do not treat a Character as a confidential diary. |
| Training opt-out | A July 1, 2026 update says applicable regional settings may allow an opt-out from using personal data to train and improve models. | Use the opt-out if it fits your preference, while recognizing that service, safety, search or recommendation uses may remain. |
Parents should tell teens never to enter real names, home addresses, precise location, school details, passwords, intimate images, medical records, financial information, or private family conflicts merely because the interface feels personal. A roleplay conversation is still data sent to a company’s systems and potentially to service providers.
Does Character.AI require a selfie or government ID?
Character.AI’s July 2026 documentation says age assurance runs on all accounts and uses signals such as login information, activity on the platform, and third-party signals. If the system flags a person as under 18 and that person wants to prove they are an adult, Persona generally starts with a selfie. A government ID may be requested only as a final step if the selfie is inconclusive.
Character.AI says it does not collect or store documents submitted during age verification because Persona handles the process, and that Persona automatically deletes biometric data or government IDs within seven days. Those are the company’s statements about its current process, not an independent audit finding. Age assurance therefore involves a privacy trade-off: proving age may require biometric or identity information to pass through a third party, even if the platform says the data are deleted quickly.
Do not help a minor evade age checks with an adult’s identity or a false birthday. That can create account, privacy, and safety problems and may place the child in an adult experience that is not designed for them.

Can a teenager use Character.AI as a therapist or crisis counselor?
No. Character.AI is an entertainment and roleplay service, not a licensed clinician, crisis line, medical provider, or emergency service. A Character can imitate empathy while inventing facts, reinforcing an unhealthy belief, missing signs of danger, or encouraging secrecy from adults.
Make a simple family rule: the service must never be the only place a teen discusses self-harm, abuse, sexual exploitation, threats, eating-disorder behavior, medication, or immediate danger. If a Character encourages self-harm, dangerous behavior, sexual secrecy, isolation, or abuse, the teen should end the interaction, save only the information needed to report it, and tell a trusted adult. For an immediate crisis, contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis professional rather than waiting for an app response.
What should parents do before allowing access?
A short, explicit plan is more useful than assuming a filter will make decisions for the family.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Check the actual account experience. Confirm whether the account is in the Under-18 reading-only mode and whether the country-specific rollout matches the July 2026 documentation. Recheck after major app or policy updates.
- Set a no-sensitive-information rule. Ban real-world identifiers, passwords, precise location, school details, intimate images, health information, and confidential family matters.
- Explain the limits of AI empathy. Tell the teen that fluent, affectionate language does not equal expertise, loyalty, confidentiality, or human concern.
- Agree on reporting and exit steps. The teen should stop, report, and tell an adult if a Character becomes sexual, threatening, manipulative, secretive, or focused on self-harm.
- Use Parental Insights only with informed agreement. Explain that the feature shows weekly activity patterns and subscription status, not chat content, and decide together how reports will be discussed.
- Review privacy and model-improvement controls. Where a regional setting offers an AI-training opt-out, enable it if desired, but explain that other processing for safety, search, recommendations, security, or service operation may continue.
- Watch for offline effects. Increasing secrecy, lost sleep, falling school performance, withdrawal from friends, or distress after using the service matters more than a reassuring Character name in a weekly report.
How should families decide whether the remaining features are appropriate?
Consider four questions rather than a simple yes-or-no label. First, is the child old enough and comfortable enough to leave an unsettling interaction and tell an adult? Second, does the account actually provide only reading access, or has an age-assurance error placed the user in a different experience? Third, can the family enforce the no-sensitive-data rule without relying on covert surveillance? Fourth, would the service displace sleep, schoolwork, friendships, or professional help?

If the answer to any of those questions is unfavorable, postponing use is the safer choice. If a family permits access, keep the purpose narrow—reading and creative entertainment—and revisit the decision whenever Character.AI changes its age rules, verification process, or available features.
Bottom line: is Character.AI safe for teenagers?
Character.AI’s current under-18 experience is more restricted than the open-ended teen chat described in older coverage: official July 2026 documentation says it is reading-only without character chat, with stricter classifiers and a narrower Character selection. That is a meaningful safeguard, not a guarantee. The service still processes account and interaction data, age assurance can involve a selfie or government ID through Persona, and Parental Insights reports activity rather than conversations. Independent guidance remains cautious. Parents should verify the live account experience, prohibit sensitive disclosures, treat the service as entertainment rather than advice, and require immediate human help for any crisis or unsafe interaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a teen do if a Character asks them to keep a secret?
End the conversation and tell a trusted adult. Requests to hide chats, move to another platform, share intimate material, or avoid parents and friends are warning signs, regardless of how caring the Character sounds.
Recommended Free Tools
How can a parent check whether an account is really in the teen experience?
Review the account together and look for the reading-only behavior described in Character.AI’s current age-assurance documentation. Because rollout and regional implementation can change, confirm again after app updates instead of relying on the account’s original birth date alone.
Does turning off model training erase a teenager’s previous chats?
No. Character.AI’s guidance describes an opt-out from certain model-training uses where available, while other processing for safety, search, recommendations, security, or service operation may continue. An opt-out should not be treated as a universal deletion request.
What if age verification asks my child for an ID?
Do not submit another person’s identity or attempt to bypass the check. Character.AI says Persona generally starts with a selfie and may request government ID only when that is inconclusive; families should weigh that third-party biometric and identity trade-off before proceeding.
