This article covers KPMG’s global CEO Outlook 2022: Growth strategies in turbulent times, while distinguishing it from EY’s separate survey and KPMG’s regional editions. KPMG’s study captures what 1,325 large-company chief executives expected in mid-2022; it is historical executive sentiment, not a current economic forecast.
What KPMG’s global CEO Outlook 2022 measured
KPMG describes this as its eighth international CEO Outlook. The study examined CEOs’ three-year outlook across economic and geopolitical conditions, environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities, technology investment and talent.
The fieldwork ran from 12 July to 24 August 2022, according to KPMG France’s methodology release. Respondents represented 11 markets and 11 industry sectors. Participating companies reported annual revenue above US$500 million, and one-third generated more than US$10 billion. Those limits matter: the findings should not be generalized automatically to small businesses, every country or industries outside the sample.

Headline findings from the 2022 global survey
Confidence increased despite expected turbulence
KPMG reported that 71% of respondents were confident or very confident about global growth. KPMG compared that result with 60% in its January 2022 Pulse survey. These are reported expectations at the time of the survey, not measurements of growth that later occurred.
Most respondents said they had prepared for recession
Seventy-six percent of international respondents told KPMG they had planned and prepared for a recession. The figure indicates perceived readiness in 2022; it does not establish whether those plans proved effective or whether a recession occurred in every respondent’s market.

Economic pressure was being weighed against ESG goals
KPMG organized the report around how economic and geopolitical challenges could affect ESG commitments. The emphasis was not simply whether companies supported ESG, but how leaders intended to maintain priorities while facing inflationary, supply-chain, geopolitical and other pressures present in 2022.
Technology was treated as a growth investment
Technology investment appears as a core growth lever in KPMG’s framework. The report links digital and technology decisions to competitiveness and resilience rather than presenting technology spending as an isolated IT budget issue.

Talent remained an operational priority
Talent is the fourth organizing theme. KPMG presents workforce capability and leadership attention as necessary to execute growth strategies while organizations dealt with disruption and changing skills requirements.
How to interpret the numbers
The survey is best read as a snapshot of large-company leadership expectations during a specific period in 2022. Confidence percentages describe respondents’ views, not an independent forecast model, and the sample’s revenue threshold and market coverage limit how broadly the results apply.
“The ordeals over the past two years have certainly taught CEOs of the need to be constantly agile in the face of sudden adversities. Now, with those experiences under their belt, it is uplifting to see CEOs are finding opportunities amidst the fog of uncertainties.”

Which “CEO Outlook 2022” report do you mean?
Several publishers used the same title. Their samples and geographies are not interchangeable.
| Report | Publisher and scope | Sample or added perspective | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| KPMG global CEO Outlook 2022 | KPMG; international study | 1,325 CEOs; 11 markets and 11 sectors; fieldwork 12 July–24 August 2022 | The global findings and percentages discussed in this article |
| EY CEO Outlook 2022 | EY; separate global survey described in EY Italy’s release | More than 2,000 global CEOs, including more than 70 in Italy | A different publisher, questionnaire and respondent set |
| KPMG New Zealand CEO Outlook 2022 | KPMG; New Zealand edition alongside the global study | Views from 30 New Zealand business leaders | A regional perspective, not a replacement for the 1,325-person global sample |
Sources: EY Italy’s release and KPMG New Zealand’s edition. A larger sample alone does not make one report more authoritative; publisher, geography, fieldwork and questions all affect comparability.
What the report can—and cannot—tell you today
- Useful for: understanding how large-company leaders framed growth, recession preparation, ESG, technology and talent in 2022.
- Not evidence of: current CEO confidence, current economic conditions or realized business performance.
- Apply cautiously: the sample excludes companies below US$500 million in annual revenue and does not represent every market or sector.
- Keep editions separate: do not combine KPMG’s global percentages with EY’s results or regional KPMG commentary.
Bottom line on CEO Outlook 2022
KPMG’s global 2022 survey portrayed CEOs as simultaneously more confident about global growth and actively preparing for recession. Its central management agenda combined economic and geopolitical resilience with ESG decisions, technology-led growth and talent execution. Because the evidence records expectations from a defined group of large-company leaders in July and August 2022, it should be used as historical context rather than a present-day forecast.
