EC-Council’s CEH v13 announcement described an ethical-hacking qualification built around artificial intelligence and the five phases of the hacking process. The provider now presents the course as CEH AI, so the September 23, 2024 BetaNews story is best understood as the launch of the current CEH AI direction rather than the course’s present brand name.

What changed from the CEH v13 announcement?

BetaNews reported that EC-Council was integrating AI throughout its Certified Ethical Hacker curriculum. The launch framing used the name CEH v13 and positioned the qualification within a “Learn, Certify, Engage, and Compete” model. EC-Council’s current course listing uses CEH AI. That naming change matters when searching for enrollment details, course packages or updated exam policies.

The AI emphasis includes coverage of attacks against AI systems. The launch description specifically mentioned the OWASP Top 10 AI attacks, including prompt injection, insecure output handling and training-data poisoning.

What the current CEH AI course lists

EC-Council’s current course page, accessed in September 2026, lists the following provider-reported content:

Course element Provider-listed figure or description
Learning modules 20 modules
Hands-on labs 221 labs
Attack techniques 550 techniques
Hacking and security tools More than 4,000 tools
Practice environment Simulated environment with practical exercises
Competition A year-long capture-the-flag competition described in the launch framework

These are counts of course content supplied by EC-Council. They are not independent measurements of learning effectiveness, certification value, pass rates, employability or reduced cybercrime. No independent outcome study or published CEH pass-rate analysis was identified in the cited announcement and official course material.

How certification and the practical assessment work

The current course page separates the required knowledge certification from an optional practical assessment.

Assessment Format Result
CEH knowledge exam Four hours, 125 multiple-choice questions Passing awards the CEH certification
CEH practical exam Optional six-hour assessment with 20 challenges Completing it together with the knowledge exam leads to CEH Master

EC-Council’s page displays different passing-score ranges in separate sections. Because those figures are not consistently stated, prospective candidates should verify the current scoring policy directly with EC-Council or the training provider before booking an exam.

Who is the qualification designed for?

EC-Council says there are no specific prerequisites, but it recommends at least two years of information-security experience. Learners are expected to understand foundational IT systems and networking. People without that background are directed to EC-Council’s cybersecurity essentials material first.

It may suit you if

  • You already work with IT systems, networks or security and want a structured ethical-hacking curriculum.
  • You need preparation that combines conceptual study with provider-hosted labs and simulated exercises.
  • You want the option of pursuing CEH Master through the additional practical exam.
  • You specifically need introductory coverage of attacks against AI applications and models.

It may not be the right starting point if

  • You are new to networking, operating systems and basic security concepts.
  • You expect the provider’s tool and lab counts to guarantee job results or practical proficiency.
  • You need independently verified evidence of pass rates or employment outcomes before enrolling.

Delivery formats and price considerations

EC-Council lists three delivery routes: self-paced online study, live online instruction and in-person training through training centers or education programs. Pricing varies by region, delivery format and package. The provider asks prospective students to request current pricing rather than publishing one universal price.

Before paying, confirm exactly what the package includes:

  • Knowledge-exam eligibility and voucher validity
  • Access period for the 221 listed labs and other course resources
  • Whether the optional practical exam is included or costs extra
  • Instructor support, retake terms and scheduling rules
  • Taxes, currency conversion and any regional training-partner fees

What “tackling cybercrime” means in practice

The qualification is training and assessment; it is not a law-enforcement program or a guarantee that graduates will prevent cybercrime. Its practical value depends on how well a learner can apply authorized testing methods, document vulnerabilities, communicate risk and operate within legal and organizational rules.

AI-related security content is increasingly relevant because defenders must test systems that accept natural-language prompts, generate outputs or rely on training data. However, a syllabus mention of prompt injection, insecure output handling or training-data poisoning does not by itself establish depth, currentness or real-world performance. Ask for the module outline and lab scope if those topics are central to your role.

How to compare CEH AI with other training options

Use the same checks for every provider instead of comparing headline tool counts:

  1. Map the curriculum: Check coverage of networking, web applications, cloud, social engineering, malware, incident handling and AI-system attacks against your target role.
  2. Inspect the practice: Determine whether labs are isolated, resettable and based on realistic scenarios, and whether access expires.
  3. Separate credentials: Establish which exam is included, whether a practical assessment is optional, and what credential each exam awards.
  4. Check entry expectations: Compare the provider’s recommended experience with your current networking and security knowledge.
  5. Calculate total regional cost: Include instruction, exam vouchers, practical-assessment fees, retakes, taxes and travel for in-person delivery.
  6. Verify current policy: Course branding, module counts, pricing and exam rules can change; confirm them immediately before enrollment.

Bottom line

CEH v13 was EC-Council’s 2024 launch framing for an AI-integrated Certified Ethical Hacker qualification; the current name is CEH AI. The course lists 20 modules, 221 labs, 550 attack techniques and more than 4,000 tools, plus a four-hour knowledge exam. The six-hour, 20-challenge practical exam is optional and can lead to CEH Master when paired with the knowledge exam. Treat those figures as provider claims, and choose the course only after checking your foundation, preferred format and region-specific total cost.
