Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Castr YouTube stream is stuck on “starting,” first identify which part of the stream path is waiting: your encoder, Castr’s incoming source, Castr’s YouTube destination, or YouTube Live Control Room. A “starting” label alone does not identify the cause. Check each stage in order, and use the exact status and preview you see to choose the next fix.
Find where the stream is stuck
There are separate steps between your encoder and a live YouTube broadcast: the encoder sends a feed to Castr, Castr routes that source to a YouTube destination, and YouTube may still require you to start a scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room. Open the Castr stream dashboard and note the status at each stage before changing settings.
| What you see | Where to troubleshoot next |
|---|---|
| Castr source says Connecting, with no preview or active stats | Encoder-to-Castr connection, server URL, key, network, and encoder output. |
| Castr has a connected source, but the YouTube destination is not active | Castr destination method, selected channel or event, and destination toggle. |
| YouTube Live Control Room shows a preview but is not live | For a scheduled stream, complete YouTube’s separate Go live step. |
Castr’s setup guide describes the source status changing from Connecting to Connected when Castr locks onto the feed. Check whether a preview and stats appear; they help distinguish a source-ingest problem from a destination or YouTube control-room step.
Confirm the encoder is reaching Castr
- Make sure the encoder is running. Confirm it is sending a live output, not merely open with a scene or file loaded.
- Check the connection details. In the encoder, verify the Castr server URL and stream key for the intended region and protocol. A stale key, wrong server, or mismatched destination can prevent Castr from receiving the source.
- Look for Castr’s source confirmation. Castr says its stats bar becomes active when it detects input. If the source remains Connecting and stats or preview are absent, continue with the encoder and network checks rather than changing YouTube’s Go live settings.
- Inspect Health Charts. Look for bitrate drops and dropped frames that coincide with the stuck or unstable source.
Castr Help Center’s 2026 guidance recommends upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. Its example is 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) upload for a 5,000 Kbps stream. Treat that as guidance, not a guarantee: other devices, network congestion, and connection stability can still affect the feed.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Where the encoder and network support it, try wired Ethernet. Castr notes that Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes; a wired connection is a reliability measure, not a fix for an incorrect key or destination.
- Close applications or devices consuming significant upload bandwidth.
- If possible, choose an ingest location near the broadcaster.
- If RTMP remains unstable, consider SRT. Castr says SRT can recover automatically from packet loss.
Check encoder settings if the source is unstable
Castr Help Center’s 2026 recommendations are a useful starting point when the source is reaching Castr unreliably. They are not a universal guarantee or a diagnosis of your particular setup.
| Setting | Castr’s recommendation |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264/AVC |
| Audio codec | AAC |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds |
| Resolution | 1920×1080 or 1280×720 |
| Frame rate | 30 FPS; use 60 FPS if the connection can support the higher bitrate |
| Video bitrate | 3,500–6,500 Kbps for 1080p; 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps |
If changing a setting, adjust one relevant value at a time and check Castr’s source status and health charts again. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more upload capacity, so do not increase bitrate just to clear a status label.

Verify Castr’s YouTube destination
Castr documents two destination setup methods. Check which one your stream uses, then verify that the destination is connected and enabled.
YouTube API or OAuth connection
- Confirm the intended YouTube channel and event are still connected in Castr.
- Check that the correct event is selected for this broadcast.
Manual YouTube server and stream key
- Compare the server and key in Castr with the values for the intended YouTube stream. Make sure they belong to the same event you are trying to broadcast.
- If using this method, Castr’s guide says description edits must be made in YouTube.
Castr’s specific troubleshooting tip is to turn destination toggles off while the source is offline, then turn them on again once the encoder source is live. Do this only after confirming Castr receives the source; toggling a destination will not repair an encoder that is not sending input.

Complete YouTube’s separate Go live step
A connected Castr source is not, by itself, proof that a scheduled YouTube broadcast is live. YouTube Help’s encoder setup instructions say: “In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview to show up, and then click Go live.” Start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live when it appears for the scheduled stream.
YouTube Help also says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. If live streaming was only just enabled for the channel, allow for that activation period rather than repeatedly changing Castr settings.

Check for a service incident and contact support
Check Castr’s live service page at https://status.castr.com/ when the problem is occurring. A status page view from an earlier time cannot establish whether services are healthy during your incident. Castr says its ingests are redundant and automatically rerouted if an ingest fails; that does not mean every connection or destination issue will resolve automatically.
If Castr receives the source and the YouTube destination looks correct but the stream still will not proceed, contact Castr support. Include the incident timestamp and time zone, region, protocol, exact status shown at each stage, whether Castr shows a preview or stats, and whether YouTube Live Control Room shows a preview.
