1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your Castr YouTube stream has audio but a black picture, set the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and its keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If the picture is black only on YouTube, check that the encoder is sending both audio and video tracks. For an uploaded video, confirm it is an MP4 and inspect the incoming source preview in Castr to find where the picture disappears.
Find where the video disappears
Use Castr’s incoming-source preview and stream statistics to distinguish a problem in the encoder or video file from one farther along the path to YouTube. Castr’s dashboard can show bitrate, resolution, codecs, and audio bitrate while a stream is live. The preview and statistics can help narrow the cause, though they are not guaranteed to identify every fault. See Castr’s guide to starting a live stream.
- The Castr preview is black: Start with the source file or encoder output. The picture is already missing before it reaches the destination.
- The Castr preview shows video, but YouTube is black: Check the destination output and confirm the encoder is sending both media tracks. Castr notes that some platforms reject streams that do not include both audio and video.
- You have audio but no picture: Check the video codec and keyframe interval first; these are Castr’s specific recommendations for this symptom.
Fix a black picture with audio
Castr’s March 18, 2026 troubleshooting guidance links a black screen with audio to an incompatible video format. Change the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. These are the direct symptom-specific fixes; bitrate changes are not a substitute for checking the codec.
- Open the video or output settings in the encoder feeding Castr.
- Set the video codec to H.264 (AVC), rather than leaving an incompatible format selected.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- Restart or reconnect the stream if required by your encoder, then check Castr’s incoming preview and the YouTube destination.
Exact menu names vary by encoder. Castr’s recommendations apply to encoder output generally; consult your encoder’s documentation for the location of its codec and keyframe controls. Read Castr’s stream-quality troubleshooting guidance.

Check an uploaded video file
Castr’s upload guide says the service supports MP4 files only. If the source is an uploaded recording and the preview is black, verify the file is MP4. A filename ending in .mp4 confirms the container label, not that its internal video encoding is compatible; Castr’s cited upload guide does not specify a complete transcoding recipe. If the file is MP4 but still produces a black picture, apply the H.264 check where you can configure the video output and inspect the preview.
Castr’s upload guide also says direct uploads are not resumable, recommends direct local upload for files under 5 GB, and describes multipart upload for files above 5 GB as coming soon. Those are upload-process details, not established causes of a black screen. See Castr’s video-upload documentation.

Use stable supporting encoder settings
If the stream is also unstable, check the broader configuration. Castr’s troubleshooting page (March 18, 2026) recommends H.264 video, AAC audio, CBR bitrate mode, a 2-second keyframe interval, 1920×1080 or 1280×720 resolution, 30 fps—or 60 fps if the connection supports the higher bitrate—and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Its video bitrate ranges are below. These are general settings, not guaranteed cures for a codec-related black screen.
| Resolution and frame rate | Castr troubleshooting page, March 18, 2026 | Castr encoder configuration guide |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | Not stated | 4,500–9,000 Kbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 3,500–6,500 Kbps | 3,000–6,000 Kbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | Not stated | 2,250–6,000 Kbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2,500–4,000 Kbps | 1,500–4,000 Kbps |
The two Castr pages give somewhat different 1080p ranges, so use the range from the relevant page rather than treating them as one definitive target. Castr’s separate encoder configuration guide recommends H.264, AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps audio preferred and not above 256 Kbps, CBR, and 2-second keyframes (not over 4 seconds).

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Black Castr preview; audio present | Change encoder video to H.264 (AVC) and set keyframes to 2 seconds; check the source file if using an uploaded recording. |
| Video visible in Castr, black on YouTube | Verify the encoder sends both audio and video tracks and inspect the destination output. |
| Uploaded source will not show video | Confirm the file is MP4, then check its internal video encoding and the incoming preview. The upload guide does not provide a full codec recipe. |
| Picture or stream is unstable | Check whether the bitrate suits the resolution and frame rate, and verify CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings against Castr’s encoder guidance. |
If the settings and signal path appear correct, you can check Castr’s status page. It showed all services online in an update dated October 2, 2026 at 4:26 pm UTC; that is a timestamped status snapshot, not a guarantee about a later stream or YouTube’s service.
