Start with Symphony of the Night if you want exploration and RPG progression, Castlevania Anniversary Collection for the original stage-based whip action, or Lords of Shadow for cinematic 3D combat. Castlevania has a classic continuity and a separate Lords of Shadow reboot branch. The early fixed-stage games are demanding and pattern-driven; the exploration games add leveling, equipment and backtracking that give you more ways to recover.
Castlevania at a glance
Castlevania is not one uninterrupted storyline. It is a long-running series with several formats, eras and continuity questions. A useful way to understand it is to separate three decisions: which style you want to play, whether you care about story chronology, and which modern collection gives you access to the relevant games.
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Interconnected exploration, equipment and RPG systems | Castlevania: Symphony of the Night | It is the landmark exploration game and a clear introduction to the style later called “Metroidvania.” |
| Classic side-scrolling stages and memorized enemy patterns | Castlevania Anniversary Collection | It samples the original stage-based format across the series’ early history. |
| Cinematic 3D action with a self-contained reboot story | Castlevania: Lords of Shadow | It begins the separate Gabriel Belmont branch and uses modern 3D combat and presentation. |
There is no single, current Konami-published chart that settles every classic-continuity placement. The chronology below is therefore a practical reading and playing aid, not a claim that every item has an uncontested canon position.
What counts as a Castlevania game?
Konami’s 40th-anniversary material says the franchise has grown to more than 30 titles. That total spans stage-based 2D action, exploration-focused role-playing games, 3D action-adventures, compilations, mobile releases and newer projects. Treating all of them as one gameplay category creates misleading difficulty and entry-point advice.

Classic stage-based action
The earliest games present discrete stages connected by bosses and checkpoints. Movement, jump timing, weapon range and enemy patterns matter more than character statistics. Limited recovery opportunities mean that learning a room is often more important than grinding for power.
Exploration and RPG-style games
Symphony of the Night, the Game Boy Advance titles and the Nintendo DS titles use interconnected maps, hidden routes, equipment and progression systems. You can revisit areas, improve your character and approach obstacles with a different build. These systems reduce some of the pressure found in fixed-stage games, although bosses and late-game checks can still be demanding.
The Lords of Shadow branch
Lords of Shadow is a separate reboot branch rather than a direct continuation of the classic chronology. Konami’s synopsis follows Gabriel Belmont, a holy knight of the Brotherhood of Light. Mirror of Fate is set 57 years after the first Lords of Shadow and follows Gabriel’s descendants Trevor and Simon. Lords of Shadow 2 presents Gabriel as Dracula in a modern-time story.
Release timeline: the milestones that matter
The timeline below uses milestones documented in Konami’s franchise history. Dates are release milestones, not a statement about story order.
| Year or date | Release or milestone |
|---|---|
| September 26, 1986 | Akumajō Dracula for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. |
| April 30, 1987 | Castlevania for NES. |
| 1988 | Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest. |
| 1990 | Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. |
| 1991 | Super Castlevania IV. |
| 1994 | Bloodlines. |
| 1995 | Dracula X. |
| 1997 | Symphony of the Night. |
| 1998–1999 | The Nintendo 64 games. |
| 2001 | Circle of the Moon. |
| 2002–2003 | The Game Boy Advance games. |
| 2003–2008 | The PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS entries. |
| 2010 | Lords of Shadow. |
| 2013 | Mirror of Fate. |
| 2014 | Lords of Shadow 2. |
| 2018 | Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood. |
| 2019 | Castlevania Anniversary Collection. |
| 2020 | Mobile release of Symphony of the Night. |
| 2021 | Grimoire of Souls and Castlevania Advance Collection. |
| 2024 | Castlevania Dominus Collection. |
Release order is the best route if you want to observe how mechanics and presentation changed over time. It is not the same as story chronology, and jumping directly from an early NES game to a later exploration title can feel like switching genres.
What order should you play the Castlevania games in?
Option 1: play by release era
For historical context, begin with Castlevania, then move through Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Super Castlevania IV, Bloodlines and Dracula X. Continue to Symphony of the Night, then sample the Nintendo 64 games, Circle of the Moon, the GBA games, the PS2 and DS entries, and finally the Lords of Shadow branch.

Option 2: use the commonly circulated classic-continuity route
If story context matters more than release history, the following sequence is a practical classic-continuity guide:
- Lament of Innocence: an origin-era Belmont story.
- Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and related early Belmont-era events: the foundation for later references to the clan and Dracula.
- Curse of Darkness, The Adventure and Belmont’s Revenge, then the original Castlevania/Simon’s Quest era: games commonly grouped around the early Belmont conflicts.
- Harmony of Dissonance, Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night: the route that leads into the best-known exploration landmark.
- Bloodlines, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, followed by Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow: later historical settings and the future Soma Cruz arc.
Use “classic continuity” as a working label. This list follows a commonly circulated independent timeline; it should not be read as a current, exhaustive Konami canon chart.
Option 3: follow the Lords of Shadow order
- Lords of Shadow: Gabriel Belmont’s story as a holy knight of the Brotherhood of Light.
- Mirror of Fate: set 57 years after the first game and focused on Trevor and Simon, Gabriel’s descendants.
- Lords of Shadow 2: Gabriel appears as Dracula in a modern-time setting.
Do not insert these games between classic-continuity entries. Their internal order is clear, but their rebooted setting is separate from the original timeline.
Which Castlevania games are canon?
“Canon” depends on which continuity you mean. The classic games share recurring characters, historical references and a broad chronology, but individual placements and the status of some releases are disputed. Konami’s official pages provide release information and individual story descriptions rather than one current, exhaustive canon chart.

Konami’s official Aria of Sorrow description gives a specific story anchor: the year is 2035, when Soma Cruz experiences the first solar eclipse of the 21st century and awakens in a mysterious castle. That date makes Aria of Sorrow and its direct sequel, Dawn of Sorrow, a clearly identifiable future arc within the classic material.

How to talk about disputed entries
Use phrases such as “classic-continuity route,” “commonly placed before” or “often grouped with” when discussing an ordering that is maintained by fan timelines rather than an up-to-date official chart. Avoid presenting every port, remake, compilation or side release as a separate canonical event unless the game’s own story requires it.
Are Lords of Shadow games connected to the originals?
They are connected by the Castlevania name, motifs and character names, but they form a separate reboot branch for story purposes. The Gabriel–Trevor–Simon progression described by Konami is internally coherent without requiring the classic Belmont chronology.
How difficult are the Castlevania games?
There is no official publisher-wide difficulty ranking, so a single number for the entire franchise would be misleading. Difficulty comes from different design choices in each era.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Format | Typical sources of difficulty | What helps the player |
|---|---|---|
| Classic stage-based games on NES, Game Boy, Super NES and Genesis | Demanding jumps, fixed enemy patterns, limited recovery and checkpoint pressure. | Learning patterns, controlling spacing and practicing stage layouts. |
| Exploration/RPG games such as Symphony of the Night, GBA and DS entries | Difficult bosses, late-game checks and the need to navigate hidden or revisited areas. | Leveling, equipment, alternate routes and the ability to return to earlier areas. |
| Lords of Shadow | A modern 3D combat learning curve, camera-based positioning and cinematic action-adventure encounters. | Learning the combat system and reading 3D enemy behavior rather than memorizing only a 2D stage. |
Why the early games feel especially hard
In a fixed-stage game, a mistake near a checkpoint can force you to replay a section with the same enemy sequence and jump timing. The design expects deliberate movement and pattern recognition. Progress is less about accumulating statistics and more about converting each failed attempt into knowledge.
Why exploration games can feel more forgiving
Exploration games let you gain levels, change equipment and search for routes that bypass an immediate obstacle. Those systems do not remove challenge; they change the recovery loop. A player who is stuck can often explore, improve a build or return with better tools instead of repeating one stage unchanged.
How to choose a difficulty that fits you
- Choose the classic collections if you enjoy precise jumps, limited resources and learning by repetition.
- Choose Symphony of the Night or the GBA/DS exploration line if you prefer experimentation, map discovery and character growth.
- Choose Lords of Shadow if you are comfortable learning 3D combat and want a story-led action adventure.
What is the best Castlevania game to start with?
Start with Symphony of the Night for exploration
Symphony of the Night is the strongest first choice if you want a nonlinear map, equipment, leveling and a clear example of the exploration format that later became known as “Metroidvania.” Its original release was in 1997, and it is also available in the focused Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood package.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Pick this route when you would rather discover hidden paths and improve a character than replay a fixed sequence of stages. Remember that the exploration structure includes backtracking by design; if you prefer short, self-contained levels, the Anniversary Collection is a better first purchase.
Start with Castlevania Anniversary Collection for classic action
Castlevania Anniversary Collection is the practical entry point for the original whip-and-stage format and a broad historical sampler. Konami lists it for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam and Epic. It lets you compare early design ideas without tracking down each original release separately.
Choose it when the appeal is precise platforming, recognizable enemy patterns and boss checkpoints. The collection is a sampler rather than a single continuous story, so play by release era or select the games whose controls and stage length suit you.
Start with Lords of Shadow for cinematic 3D action
Lords of Shadow is the best starting point if you want modern 3D presentation and a self-contained reboot branch. Continue with Mirror of Fate and then Lords of Shadow 2 to follow the internal order documented by Konami.
This route is not a substitute for the classic timeline. It is appropriate when your priority is cinematic action-adventure pacing rather than 2D stage design or interconnected-map exploration.

How the major formats differ
Stage-based versus exploration
Stage-based games divide progress into discrete levels with a known beginning and end. They reward route memory and execution. Exploration games connect rooms into a larger map and hide progress behind abilities, equipment or discoveries. They reward curiosity and allow you to revisit earlier spaces.
2D versus 3D
Two-dimensional games make spacing, sprite timing and platform geometry immediately readable. Three-dimensional games add camera position, depth and attack angles. A player who finds a classic game difficult may still enjoy Lords of Shadow, but the skills transfer differently than they do between two 2D entries.
Fixed challenge versus progression systems
Classic games largely ask you to improve as a player. Exploration games let both the player and the character improve through levels, equipment and route choices. Neither model is universally easier; they place the burden in different places.

2026 anniversary update: Belmont’s Curse
Konami’s September 25, 2026 anniversary announcement describes the series as 40 years old, lists temporary collection discounts and anniversary merchandise, and announces Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse for October 15, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch.
The announcement describes a story set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, with Rose Belmont using the Vampire Killer. Because storefront availability and regional launch status can change, verify the listing for your country before treating the announced date as proof that the game is available to purchase. The announcement alone does not establish how the game fits every disputed classic-continuity placement.
A practical decision guide
- Decide whether you want stages or a map. Pick Anniversary Collection for discrete stages; pick Symphony of the Night or an Advance/DS collection for interconnected exploration.
- Choose your presentation style. Select a 2D entry for sprite-based precision or Lords of Shadow for camera-based 3D combat.
- Choose how you want to handle difficulty. If you enjoy repeating a section until the pattern is mastered, start with a classic stage game. If you prefer to recover by leveling, changing equipment or exploring another route, start with an exploration title.
- Pick a continuity only after choosing a format. Follow the classic chronology for Belmont and Soma-era history; follow Lords of Shadow → Mirror of Fate → Lords of Shadow 2 for the reboot branch.
- Confirm access on your platform. Collections differ by system, and the documented platform lists do not guarantee identical regional storefront availability.
Common mistakes when planning a playthrough
Assuming release order is story order
The 1986 Japanese release and the 1987 NES release are the first milestones in the catalog, but later games can be set earlier or much later in the fiction. Use release order to study design history and the classic-continuity route to follow a story framework.
Expecting every game to play like Symphony of the Night
Symphony of the Night is influential, but it represents one branch of the series’ design. The NES, Super NES, Genesis and Game Boy titles emphasize fixed stages, while Lords of Shadow is a 3D action-adventure.
Calling the whole franchise one difficulty level
Challenge depends on whether the game relies on checkpoints and pattern memory, progression and equipment, or 3D combat learning. Compare games by those systems instead of assigning one rating to Castlevania as a whole.
Treating a fan-maintained timeline as an official canon chart
The practical chronology is useful, but official pages do not provide one exhaustive chart covering every release and disputed placement. Label the route as classic continuity and keep the Lords of Shadow branch separate.
