To solve the Notre Dame organ puzzle, count the candles beneath each zodiac or celestial symbol in the Stained Glass Gallery, then press those symbols on the floor organ from one candle through nine candles. A wrong key resets the attempt, so restart at the one-candle symbol immediately if you make a mistake. You do not need a real piano, MIDI controller, or timed musical performance.
Quick answer: the candle-count solution
The reliable rule is numerical rather than musical:
- Inspect every zodiac or celestial symbol in Notre Dame’s Stained Glass Gallery.
- Count the candles directly beneath each symbol.
- Return to the floor organ and press the symbol with one candle, then two, continuing in ascending order through nine.
- If any input is wrong, the complete attempt resets. Begin again with the one-candle symbol.
An iTechGuides walkthrough currently reports the following convenient sequence. Treat it as a reported arrangement, not a guaranteed universal code: the candle counts in your own gallery take priority if the layout differs.

What the Notre Dame piano puzzle actually is
Despite being called the piano puzzle, this challenge uses an in-game floor organ in the Notre Dame area of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The playable keys are marked with zodiac and celestial symbols. The nearby Stained Glass Gallery supplies the information needed to determine their order.
This is an observation-and-sequencing puzzle, not a test of musical ability. The game does not require you to reproduce a melody, recognize notes, or perform a timed song. You simply identify nine symbols and activate them in the order represented by their candle totals.
How the candle-count rule works
Use the gallery as the authority
Walk to the Stained Glass Gallery before entering anything on the organ. Under each zodiac or celestial image is a group of candles. Those groups encode the values one through nine. The symbol with one candle is first, the symbol with two candles is second, and so on until the symbol with nine candles is last.
Because the rule is based on what is displayed in your run, it remains useful even if a patch, platform version, or different room arrangement changes the visual order. Do not infer an order from the left-to-right position of the organ keys; position is not the code.

Record all nine symbols
Make a quick written or mental list before returning to the organ. A simple two-column note—candle number and symbol—prevents you from repeatedly crossing the room and reduces the chance of confusing similar markings. Count candles, not the decorative rays, stars, or details in the stained glass itself.
Enter the numbers, not a melody
At the organ, locate the symbol associated with one candle and activate it once. Continue with the two-candle symbol, then the three-candle symbol, until every value from one to nine has been entered exactly once. There is no benefit to pressing a key repeatedly or experimenting with chords.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Reach Notre Dame. Proceed to the organ area and locate the Stained Glass Gallery connected to it.
- Inspect the gallery. Examine each zodiac or celestial panel and count the candles beneath the symbol. Include all nine symbols.
- Build your order. Arrange the symbols from the one-candle panel through the nine-candle panel. Keep the list visible while you move back to the organ.
- Return to the floor organ. The same symbols appear on the playable keys. Start with the one-candle symbol, regardless of where that key sits physically.
- Press each key once in ascending candle order. After each input, confirm that the game accepted it before moving to the next symbol.
- Finish the ninth input. A correct nine-symbol entry unlocks a secret route near the organ. Enter that route to reach the reward.
The reported Libra-to-Aries shortcut
For players whose gallery matches the arrangement documented by the current iTechGuides walkthrough, the practical order is Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces, Virgo, Sun & Moon, Leo, Cancer, and Aries. The table above maps each position to its reported candle value.
This list is a convenience shortcut, not an officially confirmed universal code. No Konami puzzle manual or developer-published canonical order has been identified. If your gallery shows a different candle assignment, follow the displayed counts instead of forcing the reported list.

What happens after a wrong key
The attempt resets completely
A wrong input does not merely return you to the previous step. Contemporary walkthroughs, including Destructoid’s October 15, 2026 guide, state that pressing a wrong key makes you start from scratch. You must therefore re-enter the one-candle symbol and continue through all nine values again.
Recover without guessing
When a reset occurs, stop pressing keys and go back to the gallery. Recount any symbol you may have misread, then restart at one. Randomly trying the next key risks another reset and gives no information about the correct order.
Movement tips for reaching every organ key
Some symbols sit toward the outer ends of the organ. Guides mention Air Dash as a useful way to reach those distant keys quickly and safely. Use it when ordinary movement leaves you short of a key, but do not interpret the need for movement assistance as an additional puzzle mechanic.
The puzzle has no documented timer and no required sequence of jumps. Take the time to position your character over the intended symbol, especially after a reset. A missed input is safer to avoid than to correct.

Do you need a real piano or MIDI controller?
No. The organ is an interactive object inside the game, and its symbols are activated with the game’s normal movement and interaction controls. A physical piano, MIDI keyboard, external controller, or printed strategy guide is unnecessary.
Thinking of the room as a musical keyboard can be misleading. The game checks the order of symbol inputs; it does not evaluate pitch, rhythm, velocity, or the sound produced by a real instrument. If you are playing on a controller or keyboard, use the standard controls assigned by your platform and focus on selecting the correct marked key.

Completing all nine inputs opens a hidden passage near the organ. Follow the newly available route to obtain War and Famine, which walkthroughs describe as the reward for this Notre Dame secret.
The weapon is tied to the successful full sequence. If the passage does not appear, assume the game did not register a complete nine-symbol solution: return to the gallery, verify the candle assignments, and perform the sequence again without a wrong input.

Troubleshooting checklist
The published sequence does not work
Use your gallery’s candle counts rather than the reported Libra-to-Aries shortcut. The shortcut reflects one documented arrangement; the in-game display is the authoritative reference for a different layout.
I cannot tell how many candles a panel has
Move close to the stained-glass image and inspect the area directly beneath the symbol. Count the candle objects themselves, ignoring surrounding decoration. If visibility is poor, adjust your camera position before recording the number.
I pressed the wrong key
The sequence has reset. Reopen your notes or recount the gallery, then begin with the one-candle symbol. There is no partial progress to recover.

Use Air Dash to cover the gap, then line up with the marked key before activating it. The movement aid changes how you reach the key, not which key belongs at that candle number.
The secret route is still closed
Check that every value from one through nine was entered once and in ascending order. A skipped symbol, duplicate press, or wrong key requires a fresh attempt.
How certain is the shortcut, and when should you recheck it?
The candle-count mechanic is the stable solution because it derives directly from the room’s visual clues. The Libra-to-Aries ordering is a reported convenience sequence from a current third-party walkthrough, not a developer-issued code. Independent walkthrough coverage was published in October 2026, and the available details are current as of October 19, 2026.
If a future patch changes the gallery, organ markings, or room layout, recount the candles before relying on any memorized order. The game’s displayed symbols should supersede older guides whenever the two disagree.
