OBS can use video files as media sources, while its outgoing stream encoder is configured separately. YouTube’s current guidance lists HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingest. First confirm the file plays in your OBS installation, then configure a YouTube-supported protocol and matching output encoder. Convert only if playback or encoding fails, or your intended setup cannot use a supported combination.
Why an HEVC file does not determine your stream codec
There are two separate stages: OBS reads and decodes the media source, then OBS encodes the outgoing stream. A file encoded in HEVC does not prove that OBS sends its compressed video through unchanged. The OBS documentation describes media files as sources and output encoder selection separately; it does not document HEVC passthrough. Configure and check the stream output independently of the file’s codec.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, and MKV among supported video containers for Media Sources, and its formats guide lists HEVC in MP4, MOV, MKV, and TS. That is not a guarantee that every profile, bit depth, audio track, or damaged file will play in every OBS build or on every system.
Check whether your file and OBS setup work
- Add a representative clip: in OBS, add a Media Source to a test scene and select the file. Confirm that both picture and sound play. Test a representative segment before building a full program around the file.
- Check source playback: if there is no picture, stuttering, or missing audio, inspect the source properties and OBS log. GPU hardware decoding is available for certain file types when the GPU has a suitable decoder, but it is optional and not required for every file.
- Choose the YouTube ingest protocol: use the protocol and stream key configured for the YouTube broadcast. YouTube documents HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS and also supports HEVC over HLS; OBS is listed as an HLS-capable encoder.
- Set OBS’s streaming output: choose an encoder supported for the selected protocol and target, then set the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current recommendations for that codec. Do not assume the source file’s codec is the output codec.
- Run a private or unlisted test first: check the preview and YouTube stream health before an event. Confirm that motion, audio, and color look right and that the stream remains stable.
Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
| Ingest option | HEVC guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.265/HEVC. | A continuous-stream path. Match OBS’s output settings to YouTube’s current recommendations and the encoder available on your system. |
| HLS | YouTube’s HLS setup guidance supports HEVC and lists OBS as a compatible encoder. | Requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. |
For HLS, YouTube states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” Consider that trade-off if viewers need a close-to-real-time broadcast.

Set the outgoing bitrate and keyframes
Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance for the outgoing codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a bitrate copied from a different codec’s column. For example, YouTube’s guidance checked in 2026 recommends 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p60 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal guarantees of quality or stability; available upload capacity and the selected encoder also matter.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec-specific bitrate: consult the current table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send.
If the source or stream is HDR
HDR needs a separate check; do not apply SDR assumptions blindly. YouTube’s HDR Live guidance calls for 10-bit video and compatible BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its OBS HDR instructions say RTMPS HDR requires OBS 30.1 or later and a hardware HEVC encoder. Follow YouTube’s current HDR and protocol-specific setup guidance, and verify that the source and encoder support the required color format.

When converting is the right workaround
Convert only after testing the configuration, not as a default response to seeing “HEVC” in the file details. Conversion may help if the installed OBS build cannot decode the particular file reliably, or if your chosen output encoder and YouTube protocol cannot be configured as a supported pair. It can also be appropriate when your workflow specifically requires a different stream format.
There is no safe one-size-fits-all conversion preset: the right target depends on source resolution, frame rate, HDR or SDR color, audio, and the desired latency. Preserve those properties deliberately, and test the converted file in OBS before going live.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The file has no picture, stutters, or will not play in OBS. | Source decoding, file profile, container, or damaged media. | Test a short representative segment, inspect Media Source properties and the OBS log, and check whether suitable GPU hardware decoding is available. Convert only if the file still will not play reliably. |
| The source plays, but YouTube rejects the stream or reports a problem. | Outgoing encoder, selected ingest protocol, or stream configuration. | Verify the stream key’s protocol, then check that OBS’s output encoder and settings are supported for that protocol. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate guidance, CBR, and keyframe interval recommendations. |
| The HLS broadcast works but has more delay than expected. | HLS segment-based delivery. | Account for HLS’s higher latency. If lower delay is important, assess whether the RTMP/RTMPS path is suitable for your setup. |
| HDR looks wrong or the HDR stream fails. | Bit depth, color characteristics, OBS version, or hardware encoder. | Verify the 10-bit BT.2020 and PQ/HLG requirements, and follow YouTube’s current HDR procedure for the selected protocol. For the documented OBS RTMPS HDR procedure, YouTube specifies OBS 30.1 or later and hardware HEVC encoding. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded program live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS running on a computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream a live camera feed.
