To check whether your PC can run a new blockbuster, compare its actual hardware with the current requirements for the exact game edition and platform. On Windows, use DxDiag to record your CPU, RAM, graphics card, VRAM and DirectX information; then check the game’s operating-system, storage and drive requirements too. Meeting the minimum is a compatibility screen, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate or smooth experience.

Which requirements should I use?

Start with the publisher’s support page or the game’s current store listing, and make sure the table applies to your platform and edition. A requirement for Windows does not automatically describe a console version or another operating system. Record the minimum and recommended rows separately, along with any special target such as ray tracing.

Requirements can change with patches, drivers and operating-system updates. Check the current listing before buying or upgrading, and note the edition or version context shown there. A result from an older requirements page may not describe the game as it stands now.

What minimum and recommended mean

Minimum specifications are a baseline compatibility target, not a guarantee that the game will launch reliably on every system that matches the listed parts. Even if it launches, you may need to accept lower graphics settings or resolution. Recommended specifications are a stronger starting point for the experience the publisher targets, but they still do not guarantee a particular FPS.

Keep special graphics targets separate. A game may publish distinct requirements for standard rendering and ray tracing, for example. Passing the standard minimum does not mean the PC meets the ray-tracing target.

How do I check my PC’s hardware in Windows?

Use DxDiag for a quick inventory, then check storage separately. DxDiag reports much of the processor, memory, graphics and DirectX information needed for a comparison; it does not replace checking free disk space or the drive type.

  1. Open DxDiag. Press Win+R, type dxdiag, and press Enter. If Windows asks whether to check for digitally signed drivers, choose an option to continue to the diagnostic tool.
  2. Save a report. In the DxDiag window, select Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to find. This gives you a record to compare with the requirement table.
  3. Read the System tab. Note the Windows version, whether it is 64-bit, processor model, installed memory and DirectX version. Compare the processor model rather than relying on a broad label such as “Core i7” or “Ryzen 5.”
  4. Read the Display tab. Record the graphics-card name, display memory and driver date and version. If the computer has more than one graphics adapter, check each listed adapter and determine which one the game will use.
  5. Check available storage. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the free space on the drive where you intend to install the game. Compare available capacity—not just the drive’s total size—with the listing’s requirement.
  6. Identify the drive type. Check whether the target is an HDD or SSD, and whether the listing specifies NVMe. The drive type matters when it is an explicit requirement; free space alone cannot tell you whether the drive meets it.

How do I compare my PC with the game requirements?

Compare each requirement independently. A strong graphics card cannot make up for unsupported operating-system or API requirements, and extra system RAM does not replace a VRAM shortfall.

Check What to compare Why it matters
Operating system Windows edition/version and 64-bit status against the listed support An unsupported OS or architecture can block installation or launch.
CPU Exact processor model and generation against the stated minimum or recommended CPU Broad family names do not show whether a particular processor meets the target.
GPU Exact graphics-card model against the listed class or model The GPU’s processing capability is separate from system memory and drive speed.
VRAM Graphics memory against the game’s stated amount A GPU can fall short of the VRAM requirement even if other specs look adequate.
Graphics API and features Required DirectX version or other API, plus any explicitly named graphics features A DirectX version reported by Windows does not prove that the GPU supports every feature a game requires.
System RAM Installed memory against the minimum or recommended figure System RAM and VRAM are different checks; do not count one as the other.
Storage Free space on the intended drive and any HDD, SSD or NVMe requirement Enough space on the wrong type of drive may still miss a stated requirement.

Use the game’s own wording when comparing GPUs. If it names several acceptable cards or a performance class, compare your exact model to that information rather than treating every card with a similar-sounding name as interchangeable. For an ambiguous GPU or CPU match, the requirements table alone may not establish equivalence; avoid calling it a pass based only on the product family.

What do published game requirements look like?

The current Windows listing for Baldur’s Gate 3 illustrates why every row matters. Larian Studios’ Steam listing gives a minimum of 8 GB RAM, graphics in the GTX 970/RX 480/Intel Arc A380 class with at least 4 GB VRAM, DirectX 11 and 150 GB of available space. Its recommended row raises memory to 16 GB, graphics to the RTX 2060 Super/RX 5700 XT/Intel Arc A580 class with at least 8 GB VRAM, and specifies an SSD.

Those figures are specific to the listing’s Windows requirements; they do not establish how the game will perform at a particular resolution or preset on every system that qualifies. In particular, the 150 GB figure is available storage, not a universal storage allowance for other games.

Cyberpunk 2077 shows why it is important to distinguish graphics targets. CD Projekt Red requirement data represented in PCGamingWiki separates minimum, recommended, RT minimum and RT ultra targets, with RAM figures of 12 GB, 16 GB, 16 GB and 20 GB respectively. The CPU, GPU and storage targets also differ across those tiers, including SSD/NVMe distinctions. Do not use a single RAM number from one tier as a substitute for checking the rest of the row that matches your intended graphics target.

What does the comparison tell me about performance?

If a PC is below minimum on a required component, the game may fail to launch or may need substantial compromises. If it falls between minimum and recommended, lower settings or resolution may be necessary. Meeting or exceeding recommended is a better starting point, but it is not an FPS prediction.

Steam Support makes the same distinction: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Requirements do not specify a universal result for every combination of resolution, quality preset, driver, game version and background workload.

For a target such as 60 FPS, treat it as a performance goal to validate, not an outcome you can calculate from the requirements table alone. A game may offer a built-in benchmark; if it does, use it as one way to assess the intended resolution and preset on your configuration. Otherwise, check performance in representative gameplay. Observe FPS or frame-time behavior at the settings you plan to use, because a single brief result may not describe every area of a game.

What should I do if one component falls short?

Fix the failed requirement rather than buying a general-purpose “can my PC run it” product. First identify whether the shortfall is CPU, GPU, VRAM, system RAM, graphics-feature support, operating system or storage. Then determine whether a compatible change is possible for that computer.

  • GPU, VRAM or graphics-feature shortfall: A compatible graphics card may be the relevant upgrade for a desktop. Confirm that the replacement supports the required API or feature, and check power-supply capacity and connectors, case clearance and motherboard compatibility before buying. A GPU with enough raw capacity but without a required feature is not a match.
  • System RAM shortfall: Consider a compatible RAM kit only after checking the motherboard’s supported memory type and capacity and the system’s available slots. More RAM will not fix inadequate VRAM or an unsupported graphics feature.
  • Drive type or capacity shortfall: If the game requires an SSD or NVMe drive, or the target drive lacks free space, investigate a compatible internal SSD. Verify the connection supported by the motherboard and whether the installation drive can be changed.
  • Laptop limitation: Do not assume desktop-style part replacement is possible. Check the laptop manufacturer’s upgrade options and the exact model’s constraints before planning a RAM or storage change; graphics upgrades are especially dependent on the design.

If more than one component is below minimum, addressing only one may not be enough. Re-run the comparison after any change, including the OS, API/features, free space and drive type; upgrades can resolve one bottleneck while leaving another intact.

What common comparison mistakes should I avoid?

  • Reading only the GPU name: GPU model, VRAM and API/feature support are separate checks. Record all three rather than declaring a match from the model alone.
  • Confusing DirectX version with feature support: DxDiag’s reported DirectX information is useful, but it does not prove that the graphics hardware supports every game-required feature.
  • Comparing the wrong target: Do not compare your PC with a ray-tracing or ultra target if you intend to use the standard rendering target—or assume the standard row covers ray tracing.
  • Looking at total drive capacity only: The listing may ask for available space, and it may require a particular drive type.
  • Treating a recommendation as an FPS guarantee: Requirements are not a promise of a frame rate, resolution or smoothness.
  • Using stale requirements: Recheck the publisher or store page because patches and system updates can change the relevant context.

How can I make a final buy-or-upgrade decision?

Before purchasing the game or parts, make a short pass/fail record for every listed requirement. Mark each item as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, or below minimum; if the listing names a specific feature and your system’s support is unclear, mark that as unconfirmed rather than assuming a pass.

  1. Confirm the exact game listing, platform and target graphics tier.
  2. Copy minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, OS, API/features, storage capacity and drive type into your notes.
  3. Fill in your PC’s corresponding values from DxDiag and Windows storage checks.
  4. Resolve any failed or uncertain requirement before spending on an upgrade. Check compatibility for the exact PC or laptop model and the proposed part.
  5. If the PC meets the target and performance matters, validate at the intended settings with the game’s benchmark or representative gameplay rather than relying on the specification match alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a laptop GPU’s model name to compare it with a desktop GPU?

Use the exact GPU model listed for the laptop rather than assuming a desktop card with a similar name is equivalent. Laptop hardware can differ by model and system design, so a family name alone does not establish that it meets a game’s listed target.

Can I upgrade the VRAM in my current graphics card?

For most gaming PCs, VRAM is part of the graphics card rather than a separate memory kit to add later. If VRAM is the failed requirement, compare compatible graphics-card options; for a laptop, first check whether its graphics hardware can be upgraded at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a PC that meets the recommended specs always run the game at 60 FPS?

No. A requirements row does not specify a guaranteed frame rate across different resolutions, graphics settings and game scenes. Use the game’s benchmark, if available, or evaluate representative gameplay at the settings you intend to use.

Should I trust an online ‘Can I run it?’ checker instead of comparing specs?

Treat an automated checker as a screening aid, not a guarantee of launch compatibility or performance. Confirm any result against the game’s current publisher or store requirements, especially when the question involves a specific API feature, VRAM amount or drive type.
