Yes. OBS supports WebM files as local media, and its VLC Video source can play a playlist of them for a YouTube Live broadcast. Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS, add the WebM files to the VLC Video source, and check that video and audio play correctly in OBS before going live. Your playlist’s WebM format is separate from the format OBS sends to YouTube.
Use VLC Video for a playlist of WebM files
OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists .webm as a supported video file type. Media Source is intended for a single local file; for multiple files in a playlist, use VLC Video. That source depends on VLC libraries, so it will not appear unless VLC is installed. OBS says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene where the playlist should play. In the Sources box, click + and choose VLC Video Source. If that option is missing, see the troubleshooting section below.
- Create or select the source, then add your WebM files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist’s loop and shuffle options for your program. Loop is on by default and shuffle is off by default. Leave shuffle off if the files must play in a set order; enable looping if the program should repeat instead of stopping after the list.
- Preview the scene. Confirm that each file plays and that its audio is audible and correctly routed in OBS before starting the broadcast.
OBS documents WebM support, but that does not guarantee that every WebM encoding, audio track, damaged file, or computer configuration will work. The preview is the practical compatibility check for your particular playlist.
Keep the playlist format separate from YouTube’s live input
The WebM files are local inputs: OBS reads and decodes them, then encodes its own outgoing live stream. YouTube receives that outgoing stream, not the original WebM files. Choose OBS’s output protocol and encoder settings to match the ingest option selected for your YouTube stream. For ordinary RTMP ingest, YouTube lists H.264; other ingest protocols have their own supported codecs and requirements. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and ingestion protocols when configuring the output.

Troubleshoot common problems
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
- Cause: VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS.
- Fix: Install VLC that matches your OBS installation. OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu again.
A WebM file does not play or has no audio
- Cause: Support for the WebM file type does not establish compatibility with every codec combination, audio track, file condition, or system setup.
- Fix: Test each file in the OBS preview and check audio there before going live. If a file fails, verify that the file itself plays correctly and use a known-good compatible version rather than assuming the entire playlist is supported.
The playlist stops or plays files in the wrong order
- Cause: The loop and shuffle settings determine whether the playlist repeats and whether its order is randomized.
- Fix: Enable loop if the show should repeat, and turn shuffle off for a scheduled sequence.
