If you’re near a lithium-ion battery fire, don’t try to put it out with water or another extinguisher. Move away, evacuate the area and call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. Firefighters may use water to cool a battery or protect nearby objects, but that is a planned, product-specific response—not a reason for the public to approach the fire.
Why the answer depends on who is responding
Public safety advice and firefighter tactics address different risks. The U.S. Fire Administration’s public instruction is direct: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” USFA’s lithium-ion battery safety guidance is for people facing a fire, not a suppression procedure.
For trained responders, water may be used to remove heat from a battery enclosure or protect nearby exposures. Cooling can help limit heat transfer, but water applied to the outside of an enclosed pack may not reach the cells or stop an internal thermal-runaway reaction. These statements are not contradictory: water can have a role in a response without being a reliable way to extinguish every battery fire.

The differences reflect the audience, battery design, enclosure and procedure. Tesla’s stationary-storage guidance and VinFast’s VF8 instructions are not general directions for other batteries or vehicles. Responders follow the relevant product’s emergency response guide and incident command—not a single rule that applies to every lithium-ion battery.

What to do if a battery catches fire
- Get away. Do not approach the battery to pour water on it or try another extinguisher. Leave the building or danger area.
- Call for help. In the United States, call 911. In other locations, call the local emergency number and follow instructions from emergency services.
- Warn others only if you can do so safely. Do not delay your own evacuation or re-enter to retrieve a device.
- Stay clear and follow responders’ directions. A battery may release gas, make popping or hissing sounds, or reignite after flames appear to be out.
Cracking, bulging, popping, hissing, visible gas venting or rising temperature can signal battery damage or thermal runaway. Treat these as reasons to increase distance and get professional help, not as a cue to inspect or cool the device yourself. USFA’s response guidance also warns that reignition can occur.
Why the fire may not be over when flames stop
Visible flames going out do not establish that a battery is safe. Heat may remain inside the battery, and the cells can reignite. The USFA recommends assessment and continued monitoring after a fire, including during transport and placement. That follow-up belongs to trained responders; do not handle, move or transport a fire-damaged battery yourself.

For scale, Tesla’s 2022 guide says a fire involving a Tesla Energy Product may continue for several hours and that a pack may need 24 hours or longer to cool after thermal runaway has consumed it. The guide describes using thermal imaging after visible fire and smoke have subsided for at least 12 hours to assess the unit. These are product-specific responder considerations, not timelines for other batteries or instructions for the public. Tesla also gives minimum defensive distances of 5 m for Powerwall, 10 m for Powerpack and 20 m for Megapack incidents, and warns that conditions may require greater distances; those figures do not apply to unrelated battery fires.
