What the Windows 11 video wallpaper feature was reported to do
The early reports described selecting a local video file as the desktop background, much like choosing an image. The video would play when viewing the desktop. Tom’s Hardware specifically reported that the feature applied to the desktop, not the lock screen.
Windows Central reported on September 20, 2025 that the feature had been spotted hidden in Windows 11 preview builds for Dev and Beta Insiders. Tom’s Hardware reported the next day that it appeared in Insider build 26×20.6690. Neither report described it as an officially announced, generally available feature.
Which video formats were reported
The two September 2025 reports named six formats in common. Tom’s Hardware also listed WEBM. These are historical reports, not a confirmed current Microsoft specification.

Because Microsoft’s official format specification was not established in the sources reviewed, a listed extension should not be taken as a guarantee that a particular file will work on a current build.
Is video wallpaper available in Windows 11 now?
Public availability is unconfirmed. Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26300.9278, in the Release Preview Channel on August 27, 2026, ahead of a planned general availability later that year. The announcement described Windows 11’s continuous feature delivery across versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 but did not mention video wallpapers (Microsoft’s 26H2 Release Preview announcement).

Microsoft’s September 10, 2026 Release Preview notes and August 31, 2026 Beta documentation describe other wallpaper changes, including DIB image backgrounds, improvements to background settings reliability and previews, and slideshow support across multiple desktops. Neither mentions video wallpaper (Release Preview notes; Beta Channel notes). Those omissions do not establish that the feature was removed or never shipped. Check the wallpaper options on the specific Windows build you use rather than assuming the old preview instructions apply.
Should you try the old Insider instructions?
Tom’s Hardware’s September 2025 report described enabling experimental feature ID 57645315 in build 26×20.6690, then selecting a video in Settings. That is a historical procedure for an experimental preview build, not a dependable set of instructions for current Windows 11. The feature’s current UI path and availability are not established by the later Microsoft notes cited above.

Alternatives and practical trade-offs
If video wallpaper is not available on your build, Windows Central named Wallpaper Engine and Lively Wallpaper as third-party alternatives. It specifically described Wallpaper Engine as supporting video, 3D, and interactive wallpapers; the sources do not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison or measured resource use for either app.
- Availability: Check whether the option exists on your Windows build before relying on native support.
- Wallpaper type: A local video background is different from an interactive or 3D wallpaper; the cited reports do not establish the native feature as offering those extra capabilities.
- Performance and battery: No cited source measured these effects. Windows Central reported that they were unknown, so do not assume video playback has no impact.
Neither third-party app is established as necessary for basic native video wallpaper support if that feature is available on a given Windows build.
