Proton is a Steam compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. PS5 games use the console’s own software and update controls. If you meant a Linux gaming PC, you can choose Proton separately for each Steam game; there is no single best version for every title.
What Proton does—and why it does not apply to PS5
Valve describes Proton as a tool used with the Steam client to run Windows-exclusive games on Linux. It is not a PS5 feature or a setting that can be installed on the console. Valve’s Proton documentation explains its purpose and configuration.
Sony documents PS5 system software and game troubleshooting separately from its PC gaming support. Those are different environments: changing a PS5 game’s update status is not Proton tuning. Sony also has separate guidance for PlayStation games on PC, which should not be confused with running games on a PS5 console.
If you meant a Windows game on a Steam Linux PC
Proton is relevant when you are using Steam on Linux. Start by checking whether the game has a native Linux version; native games do not need Proton. For a Windows game, Steam Play can provide a compatibility tool, but support and functionality vary by game. Ubuntu’s Proton/Steam Play guide covers the setup flow and warns that unsupported titles can vary in functionality.

Select a compatibility tool for one game
- In Steam, open your Library and right-click the game, then choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if you want to test a different Proton version.
- Choose a tool, launch the game, and check whether it resolves the specific issue you are troubleshooting. If it introduces a problem, return to Compatibility and restore the prior selection or let Steam choose.
Use this as a per-game test, not a universal performance preset. A different Proton version may affect whether a particular title runs correctly, but the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed frame-rate gain or compatibility result.
Keep launch options specific to a documented issue
Steam lets you enter launch options for an individual game in Properties under its launch options control. Valve documents Proton runtime overrides as environment-variable options followed by %command%. Do not add a generic override just to seek better performance: leave options unspecified to use Steam’s defaults unless you have a documented, game-specific reason to change them. What to check when a game does not work well
- Confirm whether the title has a native Linux build or needs Proton.
- Check the title’s compatibility status and the particular failure you are seeing before changing versions.
- Test one compatibility-tool change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Do not assume Proton alone can overcome the game’s hardware requirements or guarantee better performance.
Valve’s Steam for Linux supported-games information describes Steam Play support; the actual result remains title-dependent.
If you meant a game running on a PS5 console
Use PlayStation’s console-specific maintenance and troubleshooting instead of looking for Proton settings. To check for system software updates, Sony’s path is Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony’s game-start troubleshooting also includes console-specific actions such as restarting, updating, or reinstalling where appropriate. Follow the steps for the affected game and console in Sony’s PS5 system software support.

If you mean a PS5 controller connected to a Linux PC
That is a different question from using Proton on a PS5. The game would still be running on the PC, while the controller is an input device. Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC support covers its PC gaming and input options; the title alone does not establish which controller setup or game you are using.
