No—not for a new, generally available free mailbox. Microsoft retired the consumer Outlook.com Premium custom-domain feature after 28 February 2021. You can still receive domain mail in an Outlook.com inbox by forwarding it, and some Microsoft 365 Personal or Family users can connect eligible GoDaddy-managed domains for a personalized address. Neither option is the same as a free, universal custom-domain mailbox hosted by Outlook.com.

What changed with Outlook.com custom domains

Microsoft’s support notice says that, after 28 February 2021, Outlook.com Premium and Ad-Free Outlook.com subscriptions would no longer include the ability to use a custom domain with Outlook.com. That removed the old consumer path many tutorials still describe.

A domain name is also a separate paid prerequisite. Outlook.com does not provide a free domain; you must already own the domain and control its DNS.

What Microsoft supports now

GoDaddy-managed personalized addresses

Microsoft’s current Domains FAQ says it supports connecting domains managed by GoDaddy with Outlook.com. This is a restricted personalized-address feature for eligible Microsoft 365 Personal or Family contexts, not a free replacement for full domain hosting. Availability depends on the account and domain conditions Microsoft currently accepts.

Microsoft 365 business email

For a real mailbox hosted on your domain, Microsoft points to Microsoft 365 business email. After you add and verify the domain, changing its MX record directs mail for that domain to Microsoft 365. This requires a paid business subscription, DNS access and control of the domain.

Forwarding into Outlook.com

You can configure forwarding with your domain registrar, DNS provider or forwarding service so incoming messages are delivered to an Outlook.com address. Outlook.com also provides automatic-forwarding controls and can optionally keep a copy in the original mailbox. Forwarding changes where a copy of a message is delivered; it does not make Outlook.com the authoritative host for the domain.

How to forward your domain to Outlook.com

  1. Confirm that you control the domain. Sign in to the registrar or DNS provider where the domain is managed. The domain itself is not supplied by Outlook.com.
  2. Create the forwarding destination. Set the domain or forwarding provider to send mail addressed to your custom address to your Outlook.com mailbox. Provider screens and limits differ, so follow that provider’s current instructions.
  3. Decide where the authoritative mailbox remains. Forwarding does not automatically move the domain’s mailbox. Keep the existing mail host or use a provider that explicitly offers forwarding without mailbox hosting.
  4. Review Outlook.com forwarding controls. In Outlook.com, open Settings, then Mail and Forwarding, to manage forwarding or redirection from the Outlook.com mailbox itself. Microsoft documents an option to keep a copy when automatic forwarding is enabled.
  5. Test both directions. Send a message to the custom address from an unrelated account, verify delivery in Outlook.com, and check the original mailbox or provider logs if the message does not arrive. Also test replies, because receiving through forwarding does not guarantee that replies will authenticate as your domain.

Can you reply from the custom address?

Microsoft says Outlook.com can send mail from an email account you connect or from an alias used by your Microsoft account. However, Microsoft cautions that you may not have permission to send from every address shown in the interface.

That distinction matters with forwarding. A message can arrive at Outlook.com through a forwarding rule while the From address remains your ordinary Outlook.com address. If you need dependable sending as you@yourdomain.example, use a connected account or supported alias, and verify that the provider authorizes that address. A dedicated domain host gives you clearer control over authentication, replies and mailbox policies.

Why old tutorials no longer work

Guides built around Outlook.com Premium or older Personal/Family personalized-domain screens describe retired or restricted functionality. Do not assume that an old menu, subscription name or setup wizard is still available in 2026.

Be especially careful before removing a legacy personalized address. Microsoft’s current pages do not promise that a removed legacy address can be recreated, so treat deletion as potentially irreversible and preserve any mail, aliases and DNS records you may need before changing the setup.

Requirements for full custom-domain hosting

  • A registered domain that you own and can manage.
  • Access to the domain’s DNS records for verification and MX changes.
  • A supported paid mail service, such as Microsoft 365 business email, with enough mailboxes and aliases for your users.
  • A migration plan if mail is currently hosted elsewhere, including exports, forwarding during the cutover and testing after MX propagation.

Bottom line for 2026

A new user generally cannot create a free custom-domain mailbox hosted directly by consumer Outlook.com. Use forwarding when you only need delivery to an Outlook.com inbox. Use Microsoft 365 business or another dedicated provider when you need the domain’s actual mailboxes, reliable sending and administrative control. The only current consumer-style personalized-domain path Microsoft documents is for eligible accounts with GoDaddy-managed domains, and it should not be confused with the retired free hosting model.
