Yes—but using the same YouTube stream key on two VPS servers does not, by itself, provide failover. Configure one encoder to send to YouTube’s primary ingestion address and the other to the matching backup ingestion address for the same stream. The two feeds should run simultaneously, and you should test that YouTube’s player rolls over when the primary stops. YouTube does not guarantee a universal recovery time or seamless failover for every VPS and encoder setup.
What the stream key does—and does not do
A YouTube stream key identifies the stream settings your encoder sends to YouTube and authorizes YouTube to accept that feed. You can reuse a custom key in stream settings, but the key is not a failover mechanism on its own. The important detail is where each encoder sends its feed: YouTube provides a primary ingestion address and a separate backup ingestion address for the stream. YouTube’s stream-key guidance and LiveStreams API documentation describe these roles.

For redundancy, VPS A sends the primary feed and VPS B sends a simultaneous matching copy to the designated backup address. Merely configuring both servers to send to the same primary URL is not the documented primary/backup arrangement. Nor is the backup address simply a destination to switch to manually after the primary has already failed.
How to configure two VPS encoders
- Identify the stream and protocol. In YouTube’s live-stream settings or the encoder/API configuration, note the stream key and the available primary and backup ingestion addresses for that stream. Use the actual values YouTube provides; do not guess or construct an endpoint.
- Configure VPS A as primary. Enter the stream key or stream name and the primary ingestion address in the encoder on VPS A.
- Configure VPS B as backup. Use the same stream identity and the matching backup ingestion address. Configure the encoder or dual-output system to send the backup feed at the same time as the primary feed.
- Match the feeds. Keep the content and encoder settings aligned. YouTube identifies mismatches such as frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, interlacing, or profile as potential stream-health problems. Check the settings YouTube reports for the stream and make the two encoder configurations consistent.
- Start early and inspect the preview. Start both feeds well before the event. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview, audio, video, and stream health are as expected. YouTube recommends advance setup and checking the preview and accessibility before an event. See its live-streaming setup guidance.
- Test a primary failure. During a test window, stop the encoder on VPS A or disconnect its network, then observe whether the YouTube player rolls over to the backup feed. Restore the primary and repeat if needed. A configured backup is not verified until this behavior is observed.
- Monitor the live event. Watch audio and video quality during the broadcast. After YouTube ends the event, stop the encoders as appropriate.
Protocol details: HLS, RTMP, and RTMPS
HLS
YouTube’s HLS instructions explicitly show the same stream key in both the primary and backup URL templates, with different hosts and copy values. The primary uses the a.upload.youtube.com host with copy=0; the backup uses b.upload.youtube.com with copy=1. Follow the documented templates exactly, including the different copy value, which YouTube says is necessary to avoid corrupting the stream. See YouTube’s HLS live-streaming instructions.

RTMP and RTMPS
YouTube’s API provides primary and backup ingestion-address fields for RTMP and corresponding fields for RTMPS. Use those supplied addresses and an encoder configuration that supports simultaneous primary and backup output. The reviewed guidance does not establish that two arbitrary connections to one primary address behave like the designated primary/backup feeds.
Keep broadcast and stream concepts distinct
YouTube’s API treats a broadcast as the viewer-facing event and a stream as the incoming audio/video feed and its settings. A broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream may be bound to multiple broadcasts. That relationship does not mean two encoder processes will automatically provide redundancy; they still need correctly configured primary and backup ingestion destinations. Design limits and what failover cannot promise
- Two VPS instances are not automatically independent. Separate servers may reduce the effect of a single server failure, but the reviewed YouTube guidance does not prescribe VPS vendors, geographic separation, or a particular network topology.
- There is no universal failover-time guarantee here. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing rollover, but does not promise a specific recovery delay or seamless playback for every combination of encoder, VPS, and network.
- Both feeds need to be correct and available. A backup feed with mismatched settings, unsynchronized content, or a failed network path may not provide the intended continuity.
- Use a suitable dual-output method. A single-output encoder that cannot send to both destinations simultaneously is not sufficient for this arrangement by itself. Choose an encoder or system that supports the required concurrent feeds; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events but does not require a particular model.
