An older Apple MagSafe Charger can charge many newer iPhones, including models in Apple’s current compatibility list. But whether it charges is different from whether it reaches that iPhone’s fastest supported wireless rate: the result depends on the iPhone model, MagSafe Charger part number and power adapter.
Which iPhones work with an older MagSafe Charger?
Apple says most iPhone models can charge with MagSafe Charger. Its current compatibility guide lists iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 models, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. An older charger can therefore remain useful with a newer phone, though the supported peak rate varies by combination.
MagSafe Charger can also charge some iPhones that support Qi wireless charging but do not have MagSafe magnetic alignment. Apple names iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X, iPhone XS models, iPhone XR and iPhone 8 models. These phones may charge more slowly, and the charger may not attach magnetically.
Will an old MagSafe Charger charge more slowly?
It may. Apple’s stated peak rates depend on the charger model, iPhone and adapter. For the specified combinations, Apple identifies A2140 for up to 15W on iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini are listed for up to 12W in the stated setup.

Apple specifies up to 25W peak for iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17, iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max when paired with a MagSafe Charger part A3502, A3503, A2580 or A3250 and an adapter meeting its requirements. The same guidance lists up to 20W peak for iPhone Air and up to 22.5W peak for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro in the described configuration. Those figures are peak specifications, not a promise that the phone will sustain that rate throughout a charge; Apple notes actual power varies with the iPhone model, adapter and system conditions.

These are Apple’s stated configurations in its MagSafe Charger guidance. The charger can function with an adapter as low as 12W (5V/2.4A), but Apple says charging will be slower.

What power adapter do you need?
The adapter is part of the setup, not an incidental accessory. Apple’s fast-charge guidance specifies a MagSafe Charger and a 30W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter, or comparable USB-PD adapter, for iPhone 16 or later. For iPhone 15 and earlier, it specifies a 20W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or comparable USB-PD adapter for up to 15W. Apple’s charger-specific guidance gives the output profile required for the faster combinations above.
A lower-output adapter does not mean an older MagSafe Charger is incompatible; it can mean slower charging. Likewise, meeting an adapter’s wattage alone does not establish that the complete setup reaches a particular peak rate. Check its voltage/current output along with the charger and phone.

How to check your current setup
- Identify the iPhone model. Open Settings > General > About and check the model name. Compare it with Apple’s supported-device list and the rate guidance for that model.
- Find the MagSafe Charger part number. Check the charger or cable where available. Apple’s guidance names A2140 and A2580, A3250, A3502 and A3503 for the configurations above.
- Check the power adapter. Read its wattage and output profile, then compare those details with Apple’s requirements for the exact phone and charger combination.
- Separate charging from magnetic attachment. If a Qi-compatible phone charges but does not snap into place, it may be charging without MagSafe alignment.
Does a case affect MagSafe charging?
Magnetic alignment is designed for supported iPhone or MagSafe-case combinations. A compatible case can help maintain alignment when you use a case, but it is not a prerequisite for a bare iPhone that supports MagSafe. For a Qi-only iPhone, a MagSafe Charger may provide wireless charging without magnetic attachment; power and charge times differ.

Not simply because you bought a newer iPhone. Keep the old charger if it charges your phone acceptably; consider a newer specified charger and suitable adapter only if you want a configuration Apple identifies for a higher peak rate. Apple also notes that iOS may display a Slow Charger message in some cases, as described in its charge-speed guidance.
