No. Apple does not support an iPad as a home hub in the current version of Apple Home. You can still use the Home app on an iPad to add and control compatible accessories; for hub features, set up a HomePod or Apple TV instead.
What an iPad can—and cannot—do in Apple Home
Apple states that “iPad is not supported as a home hub with the new version of Apple Home.” That means an iPad cannot provide hub-dependent features such as remote access, shared home control, notifications, automations, HomeKit Secure Video, or Adaptive Lighting. See Apple’s iPad guidance on upgrading to the new version of Apple Home.
The Home app remains useful on iPad as a control surface: you can use it to add and control compatible accessories. Having the app on an iPad does not make that iPad the always-on hub. Apple’s introduction to Home on iPad describes the app’s accessory and control capabilities.
Set up a supported home hub instead
Apple identifies HomePod and Apple TV as home hub options. Follow the setup path for the device you choose; Apple’s instructions are in Set up your HomePod mini or HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub.

HomePod mini or HomePod
Set up the HomePod mini or HomePod in your home. Apple says it becomes a home hub automatically when set up.
Apple TV
- On Apple TV, open Settings.
- Select AirPlay and Apple Home.
- Assign Apple TV to a room in the Home app. Apple says Apple TV becomes a home hub when added to a room in Home.
Check Matter and Thread requirements before choosing
Apple requires a home hub to add Matter accessories. For Thread-enabled Matter accessories, the hub must also support Thread. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples; do not assume every Apple TV 4K configuration supports Thread. Confirm the exact model and connectivity configuration in Apple’s hub setup guidance before choosing a device.

Apple’s Matter support information explains Apple platform support, while its Works with Apple Home guidance distinguishes accessory pairing and local control from hub-dependent features such as automations, notifications, and remote access.

Choose a replacement hub based on your setup
- You use Thread-based Matter accessories: Select a hub Apple identifies as Thread-enabled, and verify the precise model and configuration.
- You also want a TV streaming device: Apple TV may suit both purposes, provided the model meets the requirements of your accessories.
- You also want a smart speaker: HomePod mini or HomePod may suit both purposes; Apple says these become hubs automatically when set up.
- You only need local control from the iPad: Keep using the Home app on iPad. Add a supported hub when you need hub-dependent features or to add Matter accessories.
