Sometimes a VPN connection may reach Hulu, but Hulu does not officially support using one. Hulu says it does not work with anonymizers or proxy services, including VPNs, and tells users identified as using them to disable the service. A provider’s setup guide or a dated test cannot guarantee that a particular server will work for your account, device, location, or plan.
Does Hulu work with a VPN?
Hulu’s US Help Center states: “Hulu doesn’t work with anonymizers or proxy services.” It says viewers identified as using one need to disable it to stream. That is Hulu’s published policy; it does not prove that every VPN connection will fail every time. It does mean that access through a VPN is not something Hulu promises or officially supports.
There is limited evidence of successful access in specific circumstances. TechRadar’s February 6, 2026 review reported that its tests reached Hulu using services it reviewed, including NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Those results describe that publication’s tests at that time—not Hulu approval, performance on every device or plan, or reliability in October 2026.
Why might Hulu block a VPN connection?
Hulu says it may use different technologies and methods to verify location, but its subscriber agreement does not identify one universal detection method. It would therefore be misleading to claim that a particular IP, DNS, GPS, or device check is always the reason for a block.

A VPN can also create a mismatch between the location Hulu can verify and the location or network expected for an account or plan. Hulu’s published guidance does not promise that changing VPN settings will resolve that mismatch. A “proxy detected” message is a prompt to disable the anonymizer or proxy under Hulu’s instructions, not proof that one particular technical cause has been identified.
What the available provider evidence does—and does not—show
The available sources do not support a reliable five-provider ranking for October 2026. They include provider support material and one third-party review with dated tests, but not a matched comparison of five services across the same plans, locations, devices, and dates. The examples below are evidence about published guidance and reported tests, not recommendations or guarantees.

| Service | What its published material or the cited test says | What that evidence cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Its Hulu troubleshooting page, last updated July 21, 2026, suggests switching server location; for app users, it also suggests force-closing and reopening Hulu after changing location. TechRadar reported successful Hulu access in its February 6, 2026 testing. | The support steps are the provider’s own advice, not independent confirmation. TechRadar’s result does not establish current or universal access. ExpressVPN also says users must not use its service to circumvent content providers’ geographic restrictions and are responsible for complying with third-party terms. |
| NordVPN | Its support page addresses Hulu errors and content that fails to load. TechRadar reported successful Hulu access in its February 6, 2026 testing. | The support page itself shows that problems can occur; the dated third-party result does not show that every server, device, or account will work now. |
These sources do not provide comparable success rates, repeat-test results, playback measurements, or a current five-service evaluation. They are not enough to name five “best” VPNs or to rank providers by reliability.
Hulu location rules depend on the plan
Hulu and Hulu Premium
Hulu says standard Hulu and Hulu Premium are available within the United States, including Puerto Rico and US military bases. Its international-access guidance does not make using a VPN an exception to its restriction on anonymizers and proxies.

Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV has separate location requirements. Hulu says the service is intended for a single US residence and is not available internationally, in US territories, or on US military bases. Hulu describes an exception for service members who receive internet service directly from a base.
For Live TV, Hulu requires a residential, non-mobile Home network. It says a Home network cannot be set over mobile wireless, a hotspot, or shared Wi-Fi. Subscribers may change the Home setting up to four times during a 12-month period. Mobile viewers need to check in from Home every 30 days to continue watching Live TV while away.

What to do if Hulu says “anonymous proxy detected”
- Follow Hulu’s instruction: disable the VPN or other anonymizer or proxy, then try streaming again.
- If the issue persists with the VPN off, check Hulu’s account and location requirements for your plan. For Live TV, confirm that the account’s Home network is residential and that any required check-in has been completed.
- If you contact your VPN provider, treat its steps as troubleshooting suggestions rather than proof that Hulu authorizes VPN use. For example, ExpressVPN suggests switching server location and, in its app instructions, force-closing and reopening Hulu afterward.
- Do not assume a temporary success will last. A server or setup that worked in one test may not work later or under different account, device, plan, or location conditions.
Can you watch Hulu + Live TV away from your Home network?
Hulu allows mobile viewers to watch Live TV away from Home subject to its Home-network rules: the service must have a residential, non-mobile Home network, and mobile users must check in at Home every 30 days to continue watching away. Hulu describes Live TV as intended for a single US residence and says it is unavailable internationally, in US territories, and on US military bases, subject to its stated base-internet exception. A VPN does not replace these plan requirements.
