The two games keep separate profiles, so an Old School character starts from scratch. If by “transfer” you mean consolidating access to your own characters, you can import them into one Jagex Account—with important one-way restrictions.
What “transferring a RuneScape account” can mean
There are two different actions that are easy to confuse:
- Importing a character into a Jagex Account: This changes how you sign in and manage that character. It does not move game progress between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape.
- Moving progress between the games: This is not supported. Jagex says the games have independent profiles; character information, stats, and items do not transfer. You can play the other version, but its profile is separate.
Jagex describes this separation in its RuneScape and Old School support article. If you want to return to your existing profile, use RuneScape; if you want to play Old School RuneScape, you will begin with a separate character there.
How to import your character into a Jagex Account
Importing groups character access under Jagex Account credentials. The precise route depends on how you originally signed in.

For a standard RuneScape login
- Sign in to the character’s RuneScape Account settings.
- Choose the option to upgrade the character to a Jagex Account, then follow the prompts to create a Jagex Account or use one you already have.
- After the upgrade, sign in through the Jagex Launcher and select the character. Jagex says you can also sign in through the relevant mobile app.
Jagex recommends using an accessible, secure email address and enabling two-step authentication. The upgrade replaces the old character login details, which will no longer work. See Jagex’s upgrade instructions for the current account flow.
If you already have a Jagex Account
- Open Jagex Account character management while signed in to the account you intend to keep.
- Choose Import existing and follow the prompts for the character you want to add.
- Use the Jagex Launcher to choose among the characters linked to that account.

If you sign in through a third party or mobile platform
Jagex provides an import or upgrade process for characters created through Google, Apple, Steam, Facebook, Axeso5, or UOL. Authenticate the character using Jagex’s specific instructions for that login method, and choose the intended Jagex Account for the import. Start from the relevant third-party login upgrade guidance.
For a Game Center character, Jagex’s route is specific to the Old School RuneScape app: continue with Game Center, open Account Management, and choose Link email. Jagex notes that the character may need to progress through Tutorial Island before that option appears. Follow the Game Center character instructions rather than entering credentials on a site offered by another player.

Know the limits before importing
Jagex Accounts can hold up to 20 characters, but importing is not a reversible way to reorganize them later. Jagex says an imported character cannot be removed or moved to another Jagex Account, and separate Jagex Accounts cannot be merged. Check which account is signed in before you import. Jagex’s FAQ says membership purchased for a character applies to both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape versions of that game character. That shared membership does not combine the profiles: stats, items, and character information remain independent. The same FAQ says the Jagex Launcher supports the official RuneScape and Old School clients, as well as RuneLite. See Jagex Accounts FAQ.

Protect your account and avoid transfer scams
Use Jagex’s official account settings and support instructions for imports. Do not provide your login details to a player or a website claiming it can move your stats, items, or gold between games; Jagex warns about fake sites that solicit credentials.
Importing your own character into a Jagex Account is different from handing an account to someone else. Jagex’s Rules of RuneScape prohibit sharing, transferring, or lending your account to another person. The rules also say players cannot multi-log to move Gold (GP) or items between RuneScape and Old School RuneScape and warn that swapping offers carry risk; Jagex says it cannot help if such an agreement goes wrong.
