Sometimes—but check the active ingredients on the exact packet first. Many cold and flu remedies already contain paracetamol, so taking another paracetamol product with them can mean taking too much. For adults, NHS guidance says paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken together if needed; that does not make every combination cold remedy safe to add. Advice for children is different.
Check what the cold and flu tablets contain
Read the active-ingredient list and instructions on the box or leaflet, not just the brand name or the words “cold and flu.” Formulas differ, including between products with similar branding. A remedy may already contain paracetamol, ibuprofen, or other ingredients, and its own leaflet may prohibit taking other cold medicines alongside it.
For example, the Boots All-in-one Max Strength Cold & Flu Relief Capsules leaflet lists paracetamol, guaifenesin and phenylephrine. It warns against taking other paracetamol-containing products or other cold, flu or decongestant products alongside it. Those restrictions apply to that product; another remedy may have different ingredients and directions.
The Lemsip Max Cold & Flu Capsules leaflet, revised January 2026, also contains paracetamol and warns against taking other paracetamol-containing products. Check the leaflet supplied with your current product, since the exact formulation and instructions matter.

Can adults take paracetamol and ibuprofen together?
Yes. The NHS says adults can take paracetamol and ibuprofen together if needed. However, if the cold and flu remedy already contains paracetamol, do not add another paracetamol product. The NHS advises trying each medicine alone first when appropriate and following its own packet directions. Check with a pharmacist or clinician if you are unsure whether either medicine is suitable for you; pregnancy, liver or kidney disease and other medicines can affect that decision. What if the remedy contains both medicines?
A combination product has its own restrictions. The UK patient leaflet for Panacombo Dual Action Pain Relief 200 mg/500 mg says it contains ibuprofen and paracetamol and is for adults over 18. It is intended for temporary relief of mild to moderate pain, including pain associated with cold and flu symptoms. The leaflet says to use it only after trying either ingredient individually, not to take it with other paracetamol-containing products or other ibuprofen/NSAID pain relievers, and not to use it for longer than three days. This is an example of product-specific labelling, not a recommendation to add it to a cold remedy.

What about children?
Do not apply the adult advice to children. NHS guidance says not to give a child paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time. A health professional may advise alternating them in an individual case; if so, follow that advice and the product directions, and keep a record of doses and times. Age suitability and dosing vary by medicine, so check the exact product. NHS guidance on paracetamol for children
What to do if you may have taken too much
If you have taken more paracetamol than the packet or leaflet allows, NHS adult guidance says to contact NHS 111 for advice. Do not rely on feeling well as reassurance: a product leaflet warns that an overdose can cause delayed liver damage even when someone initially feels well. If you are outside the UK, use your local urgent medical advice service.

When to seek help for flu symptoms
NHS flu guidance says to seek urgent help for concerns including shortness of breath or symptoms that are not improving after seven days. Call emergency services for sudden chest pain, severe difficulty breathing or coughing blood. These are UK care pathways; use the equivalent emergency service where you live. NHS flu guidance
