Possibly—but generating a design with AI does not automatically give you copyright in it, and any copyright you do own does not grant permission to use LEGO® trademarks, instructions, or other protected material. In the United States, copyright protection for AI-assisted output depends on whether a human determined enough of its expressive elements. LEGO’s published terms and guidance separately address its brand and materials. Before posting or selling, consider what you made, what you used, where you plan to share it, and which country’s rules apply.
Can you copyright an AI-generated LEGO design?
In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office says generative-AI output may be protected only where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements. Asking an AI for a design, even with detailed prompts, does not by itself establish human authorship of the output’s expressive choices.
Copyright protects qualifying original expression fixed in a work—not an idea, concept, system, or method. A person’s own expressive contributions may qualify, including original additions, sufficiently creative arrangement, or qualifying modifications. Any protection would extend to the human-authored expression, not automatically to elements determined by the AI. See the Copyright Office’s AI report and guidance and its explanations of what copyright is and what it protects.
Does copyright mean you can sell the design?
No. Copyright in your own contribution and permission to use LEGO intellectual property are separate questions. Owning bricks, creating a design with AI, or holding copyright in human-authored additions does not itself authorize commercial use of LEGO branding or materials.

LEGO’s U.S. Terms of Use say that its displayed marks are not licensed by implication and limit use of site materials to non-commercial personal home use unless permission is obtained. The terms also state restrictions on using site content for AI purposes without written consent. These are LEGO’s published terms; their application depends on what material is used and how.
LEGO’s help page on using LEGO products for personal projects says commercial use is not allowed for the LEGO brand names, logos, specified trademarks such as the 2×4 brick or minifigure, instructions, or pieces for commercial purposes such as marketing and PR. This is regional help guidance, not a court ruling about every possible design or use. Check the terms applicable in your country and seek permission where needed.

What changes if you share it rather than sell it?
Sharing without charge is different from selling or promoting a product, but it does not erase third-party rights or the host’s rules. A digital image, set of instructions, physical build, and product listing can each raise different questions about the content shown, the materials used, and the claims made.
If you post on a LEGO service, read that service’s current submission terms. LEGO’s Code of Conduct puts responsibility on users to obtain permission for material that is not theirs and describes content-removal rules for LEGO properties. The cited Terms of Use for LEGO Apps and Games say creators retain individual copyright in contributions submitted to covered services while granting the LEGO Group a broad, worldwide, royalty-free license to use and modify those contributions. Confirm that the particular service and its current terms are covered before submitting.

Can you use “LEGO” in the title or listing?
LEGO’s U.S. terms say a trademark license is not granted by implication. Whether a particular descriptive reference is legally permitted depends on its context and the law that applies. Avoid wording, logos, or presentation that suggests LEGO sponsors, approves, or is affiliated with your design unless you have authorization. A statement that your work is unofficial does not, by itself, resolve every trademark or other rights issue.

- Identify what you are publishing. Is it a digital image, instructions, a physical build, or a product? Are you sharing privately, promoting it publicly, or selling it?
- Separate human work from AI output. Note which expressive elements you created or changed yourself. A prompt alone does not establish copyright authorship of the resulting design.
- Review the material in the work. Check for LEGO names, logos, distinctive imagery, instructions, and pieces, as well as any third-party content you did not create. Do not assume ownership of a physical item grants permission for commercial use of its branding or protected material.
- Read the destination’s current terms. A third-party hosting service has its own rules; a LEGO platform may require a license to submitted contributions and may remove content under its policies.
- Check the relevant jurisdiction and commercial context. The Copyright Office guidance discussed here is U.S. guidance; LEGO’s personal-project help page is regional. Rules and terms may differ elsewhere.
LEGO recommends consulting an intellectual-property-qualified lawyer if you remain unsure about proceeding. This general overview cannot determine whether a specific proposed design, listing, or submission is permitted.
