Check that Plex currently offers a server package for your exact OS and CPU architecture before installing. An ARM server is most suitable when your playback devices can Direct Play your media; Plex says ARM NAS models generally do not support video transcoding.
Can Plex Media Server run on a Raspberry Pi or ARM?
Plex lists Linux as a server platform, but that does not mean every Linux distribution and ARM device is supported. Plex’s requirements do not provide a definitive Raspberry Pi model compatibility list. Windows ARM systems are explicitly unsupported, so check the current Plex Media Server requirements and installation instructions for your precise OS release and architecture before proceeding.
Do not rely on an old tutorial’s package name or assume that a package for one ARM board will work on another. The available packages and supported distributions can change.
Will a Raspberry Pi transcode Plex video?
Transcoding is when Plex converts media to a different format or quality because the playback device or connection cannot use the original stream as-is. Plex says ARM NAS models generally do not support video transcoding. That guidance is scoped to ARM NAS devices; it is not a benchmark or a guarantee about every ARM computer. Plex also says ARM NAS devices should be capable of at least one stream with no transcoding, which is guidance rather than a promise for a particular board.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a small ARM server, plan around Direct Play: the client receives the media in a format and quality it can handle without server-side video conversion. Whether a file can Direct Play depends on the client’s support for its container, codec, resolution, bitrate, and subtitles. Subtitle burn-in, a remote quality setting that requires a lower-bitrate stream, or an unsupported media format can trigger transcoding. See Plex’s transcoding overview for how playback conversion works.
How to decide whether ARM fits your Plex use
Assess the actual playback setup, not just the processor name. A Pi or other ARM host may suit a library streamed to compatible local clients, while a server expected to convert several streams needs more capable hardware.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Package support: Confirm there is a current Plex package for the exact OS release and CPU architecture.
- Client compatibility: Check whether each intended playback app can Direct Play your actual media and subtitles.
- Transcoding needs: Account for format conversion, subtitle burn-in, and remote-quality changes that may require a conversion.
- Concurrent playback: Distinguish simultaneous streams from simultaneous transcodes; each required conversion adds processing demand.
- Network: Remote viewing depends on the server’s upload capacity as well as the client’s connection. Plex discusses these constraints in its bandwidth and transcoding limits guidance.
- Storage: Plan enough space for the library and choose a suitable storage arrangement. An external drive can add capacity, but it does not improve the processor’s ability to transcode.
Plex’s CPU guidance gives progressively higher suggested desktop-class CPU capability for no transcoding, one 720p transcode, one 1080p transcode, and one 4K transcode. Those are Plex rules of thumb, not Raspberry Pi measurements; Intel examples should not be treated as direct performance equivalents for Pi models. Consult Plex’s CPU guidance and its NAS guidance when comparing a low-power ARM host with a more capable server.
How to install Plex on a Raspberry Pi or another ARM Linux device
- Identify the operating system and architecture. Check the installed OS release and CPU architecture, then verify that the current Plex download page offers a matching server package. The requirements page lists Linux distributions but does not give a definitive Raspberry Pi model compatibility matrix.
- Install the matching package. Use your distribution’s usual installation method and follow Plex’s current repository setup instructions if using its package repository. The repository instructions cover supported DEB- and RPM-based distributions and public-release updates.
- Set media-folder permissions. Plex’s Linux service runs as the
plexuser by default. Give that account read and execute access to the folders containing media. For unusual filesystems, check Plex’s installation guidance for required symlink and hardlink behavior. - Configure the server in Plex Web App. Open the Web App to claim and configure the server, then create libraries and point them to the media folders. Plex’s quick-start guide describes the Web App setup flow.
- Test real playback. Try the files, clients, subtitles, and network conditions you intend to use. Confirm whether playback is Direct Play or requires transcoding, particularly for remote viewing.
Does hardware acceleration solve ARM transcoding limits?
Not automatically. Plex documents hardware-accelerated streaming as a Plex Pass feature and describes a general path involving Intel Quick Sync alongside platform-specific conditions. A video-encoding block on an ARM board does not, by itself, establish that Plex supports it for transcoding. Check Plex’s hardware-accelerated streaming requirements for the exact hardware and software stack rather than assuming ARM hardware will accelerate conversions.
