Usually, yes—but the answer depends on when financing fails. Before delivery, Carvana can cancel an order if underwriting, identity or income checks, insurance, residency, or required funds are not completed. After delivery, you generally have Carvana’s seven-day Money Back Guarantee, provided you notify Carvana by 5 p.m. EST on the seventh calendar day, stay within the mileage limit, and meet the return policy’s condition and lien requirements. Contact Carvana immediately and obtain written confirmation of both the vehicle-return and loan status.
The short answer: delivery determines your options
Carvana financing is not final when you see an offer during pre-qualification. Carvana’s financing help content states that pre-qualification shows real terms for each vehicle but does not mean you are fully approved. Final approval requires underwriting and verification after the order is placed.
That creates two different situations:

A return does not automatically prove that the lender has canceled or corrected the loan account. The published policy does not provide one universal timetable for loan cancellation, so continue checking the lender’s statements and your credit reports until the account is accurately reflected.

Carvana lets a shopper view estimated or personalized financing terms before selecting a vehicle. That step is useful for comparing payments, but it is not the same as a completed loan approval. Carvana explicitly says that a customer who pre-qualifies is “not fully approved for a loan yet.”

After an order is placed, Carvana’s underwriting process can require verification of:
- Identity
- Income
- Employment
- Insurance
- Down-payment funds
- Residency
Carvana’s SEC filing says these checks must be passed before delivery and origination of the loan. Consequently, a financing offer that appears available online can still change or disappear if information cannot be verified, a condition is not met, or the lender declines the application.
What happens if financing fails before delivery?
Complete every outstanding verification task
Sign in to your Carvana account and look for underwriting requests, upload prompts, or messages with response deadlines. Supply documents exactly as requested and retain copies of what you submitted. If a document is rejected, ask what specific replacement is acceptable rather than assuming the original issue has been resolved.

Understand the down-payment requirement
Carvana says the down payment is due before the delivery appointment can be scheduled. If the required funds are unavailable, the order may be canceled. Do not assume that a failed bank transfer, expired payment method, or unavailable account balance will simply postpone the appointment; ask Carvana what status has been assigned to the order.
Ask for the order status in writing
Contact Carvana as soon as you learn that approval is unlikely. Ask these questions:
- Has final underwriting been approved, denied, or left incomplete?
- Is the order canceled, paused, or still active?
- Can another financing method be used without placing a new order?
- When and how will any down payment be returned?
- Are shipping, delivery, or other charges retained under the signed purchase agreement?
Carvana’s published materials establish that an order may be canceled when required funds are unavailable, but they do not establish one universal refund schedule or a single treatment for every shipping charge. The signed vehicle purchase agreement and the written response from Carvana control those details.

What happens if financing fails after delivery?
If you already received the car, the seven-day Money Back Guarantee is the primary return route. Carvana’s help center says customers can return a vehicle during the first seven days by contacting Carvana Advocates. The policy sets a precise deadline: notice must be given by 5 p.m. EST on the seventh calendar day after receipt.
How the seven-day clock works
- Record the date and time you physically received the vehicle.
- Count calendar days, including weekends and holidays; the seventh calendar day is the final day in the policy window.
- Contact Carvana before 5 p.m. EST on that seventh day and clearly state that you are exercising the return option.
- Request written confirmation of the return request, the appointment date, and any instructions for the vehicle, keys, title documents, or accessories.
Do not wait for the lender’s final denial letter if the deadline is approaching. Notify Carvana first, then continue resolving the financing record with the lender or servicer.
Mileage limit and excess-mile charge
The published policy allows up to 400 miles during the return period. Each mile above 400 costs $1 per mile. Photograph the odometer at delivery and again when the return is arranged so you can document the mileage used.

Vehicle-condition requirements
The policy excludes vehicles that have been modified, damaged, or involved in an accident. Avoid installing accessories, making mechanical or cosmetic changes, or using the vehicle in a way that could create damage while the financing question is unresolved. If damage occurs, report it promptly and ask how it affects eligibility before assuming the return will be accepted.
Lien and encumbrance restriction
A returned vehicle cannot have a lien or encumbrance other than Carvana’s retail installment contract under the published policy. This requirement matters if another lender has already recorded an interest or if paperwork creates a competing claim. Ask Carvana and the lender to explain how any recorded lien will be released before the vehicle is accepted back.

- Confirm the denial. Ask the lender or servicer whether the application was denied, rescinded, or merely delayed for additional documentation. Request the reason and the account number in writing.
- Check your return deadline. Compare the delivery date with the seventh-calendar-day, 5 p.m. EST cutoff. Treat the policy deadline as fixed unless Carvana gives you a written exception.
- Notify Carvana Advocates. State that financing has fallen through and that you want to return the vehicle under the Money Back Guarantee. Obtain a case number or other written acknowledgment.
- Preserve the vehicle’s condition. Stop unnecessary driving, do not modify it, and document mileage and any existing damage with dated photographs.
- Arrange the handoff. Keep the return appointment confirmation and follow instructions for keys, documents, plates, and personal property.
- Track the loan afterward. Ask the lender when the account will be canceled or corrected, then monitor statements and credit reports. The reviewed Carvana policy does not publish one universal lender-cancellation timetable.
How down payments and trade-ins are treated
Down payments
A down payment is part of the transaction terms, not automatically a same-day refund when financing fails. Before delivery, ask Carvana whether the order was canceled and what the signed agreement says about returning the funds. After delivery, ask for a written accounting showing how the return affects the down payment, taxes, fees, and any other amount paid.

Trade-in vehicles
Returning the purchased car does not necessarily recreate the original trade-in transaction. Carvana says that when a purchase is returned, the trade-in is treated as a sale to Carvana for the purchase price stated in the vehicle purchase agreement. Read that agreement carefully and ask how ownership, payoff balances, and any remaining equity will be handled.
Return the car or find replacement financing?
If financing is denied, you may be deciding between exercising the return right and trying to obtain another loan. Compare the choices against the facts that actually control your risk:

If the return deadline is close, preserve the return option first by contacting Carvana on time. You can ask about alternative financing without surrendering that option, but do not rely on a verbal promise that the deadline will be extended.
Records to keep for a financing dispute or return
- Screenshot or PDF of the original financing terms and pre-qualification result
- Every underwriting request and the documents you submitted
- Delivery date, time, odometer reading, and photographs of the vehicle
- Return request, case number, appointment confirmation, and vehicle handoff receipt
- Messages about down payments, shipping, trade-ins, refunds, and fees
- Lender denial notices, account statements, and credit-report entries
Use email or another channel that creates a durable record when asking about cancellation, refunds, or lien release. If a representative gives you a different deadline or exception by phone, ask for that commitment in writing.
Common mistakes that can cost you the return option
- Treating pre-qualification as approval: final underwriting still has to be completed.
- Waiting for a formal denial: the seven-day deadline can expire while lenders exchange documents.
- Counting business days: the policy uses the seventh calendar day.
- Ignoring the time zone: the stated cutoff is 5 p.m. EST.
- Driving past 400 miles: every excess mile costs $1.
- Modifying the vehicle: modifications, damage, and accidents are policy exclusions.
- Assuming the trade-in simply comes back: Carvana treats it as a sale under the purchase agreement.
- Assuming the loan disappears automatically: continue monitoring the lender’s account and credit reporting.
What the official Carvana materials establish—and what they do not
Carvana’s financing help content establishes that pre-qualification is not full approval. Its SEC filing describes the identity, income, employment, insurance, down-payment-funds, and residency checks required before delivery and loan origination. Carvana’s help center describes the seven-day return route, while the published policy supplies the 5 p.m. EST deadline, 400-mile allowance, $1-per-mile excess charge, and exclusions for modifications, damage, accidents, and competing liens. Carvana also states that a trade-in is treated as a sale when a purchase is returned.
Those materials do not state one lender-neutral schedule for canceling, reversing, or reporting every loan after a return. The lender, the retail installment contract, and the signed vehicle purchase agreement determine the account-specific steps. Written confirmation from both Carvana and the lender is therefore more reliable than assuming that returning the vehicle alone closes the financing.
