Usually, you do not need to turn off the phone: Samsung’s cited Galaxy S9+ removal instructions say to unmount the memory card, then remove it, and do not list powering off as a prerequisite. Unmount it before taking out the tray. The exact steps depend on your Galaxy model and software version.
Unmount the card before removing it
Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ User Manual (SM-G96X) says, “Before removing the memory card, first unmount it for safe removal.” Its procedure does not list turning off the phone as a prerequisite. That is guidance for the cited model, not proof that every Galaxy has identical menus or behavior.
Galaxy S9+ Settings route
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device maintenance → Storage → Storage settings → SD card → UNMOUNT.
- Insert the ejection pin into the hole on the card tray to loosen it.
- Gently pull out the tray and remove the card.
Other Samsung models may use different steps
Menu labels and navigation can vary by model and software version, and not every Galaxy phone supports a removable SD card. Check your phone’s model-specific manual for card-slot support and the correct unmount path before removing a card.
External storage connected for file transfers
For external storage connected during file transfers, Samsung’s support instructions for backing up and restoring Galaxy files say to open My Files, tap the options beside the external storage device, and choose Unmount before disconnecting it. The SD-card option appears only when storage is connected and supported.

Remove and reinsert the tray carefully
The Galaxy S9+ manual warns that a memory card that is not secured properly may come out of the tray. It also advises making sure the tray is dry before reinserting it; a wet tray can damage the device. Push the tray fully into place to help prevent liquid from entering the phone.
