No—not just because the power supply is decent. A PCIe 6-pin connector is rated for up to 75 W, while an 8-pin connector is rated for up to 150 W. NVIDIA recommends a PSU with a native 8-pin PCIe cable for a graphics card that requires an 8-pin input. A 6-pin-to-8-pin adapter is not a generally safe shortcut unless your PSU documentation explicitly confirms that its 6-pin PCIe rail can deliver the required 150 W.
Why a 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe plug are different
The connector rating is part of the GPU power design, not merely a matter of whether the plug can be made to fit. Seasonic lists the maximum card-side ratings as 75 W for a PCIe 6-pin auxiliary connector and 150 W for a PCIe 8-pin connector. See Seasonic’s connector overview.
A high-wattage or reputable PSU does not by itself prove that a particular 6-pin cable, modular socket, or rail is suitable for an 8-pin load. The exact GPU requirement, cable type, rail capability and PSU model all matter.
What NVIDIA recommends
NVIDIA Support’s answer to this exact situation says: “The recommended solution is to use a power supply with native 8-pin power cables.” Its guidance, updated September 29, 2021, also says many PSUs do not provide the current needed by an 8-pin GPU connection.
#1 Best Overall
- 6 Pin to 8 Pin PCIe Adapter: Connect a 6-pin male PCIe power plug from a compatible power supply to the 8-pin PCIe power input on a supported graphics card. Confirm the connector types before ordering
- For Compatible Low-Power GPUs: Use the PCIe power adapter only when the power supply and its 6-pin PCIe connection provide sufficient power for the graphics card. Check the documented power requirements of the PSU and GPU before installation
- 8 Pin to 6 Pin PCIe Adapter: The GPU power adapter changes a 6-pin PCIe connection into an 8-pin connector but does not increase the PSU wattage, current capacity, or available power. It is not suitable for bypassing GPU power requirements
- Secure PCIe Connections: The 8-pin male connector features a locking latch, while the 6-pin female connector uses a keyed housing to support proper alignment and help prevent accidental disconnection
- Convenient 2-Pack: Use the two PCIe adapter cables with separate compatible systems or keep one as a spare. Compatible with select Gigabyte, Radeon, and Sapphire graphics cards with an 8-pin PCIe power input. Check the GPU power requirements before use. Not compatible with CPU/EPS 8-pin ports
NVIDIA advises against a single-6-pin-to-8-pin adapter as a general solution. The only stated exception is conditional: the PSU manual must establish that the 6-pin PCIe rail itself is rated to handle 150 W. Do not infer that capability from the PSU’s brand, efficiency rating, total wattage or build quality. Read the full NVIDIA Support guidance.
Which connection options are acceptable?
| Option | Guidance | Required checks |
|---|---|---|
| Native PCIe 8-pin lead | NVIDIA’s preferred solution when the GPU calls for 8-pin power. | Confirm it is a PCIe/GPU lead and that the PSU meets the specific card’s requirements. |
| PCIe 6+2 lead | Designed to serve a GPU 8-pin input when the six-pin and detachable two-pin sections are joined. | Use all eight GPU-side pins; verify that the cable is PCIe, not CPU/EPS. For a modular PSU, confirm exact-model compatibility. |
| Single 6-pin-to-8-pin adapter | NVIDIA advises against it in general. | Only consider it if the PSU manual explicitly documents a 150 W-capable 6-pin PCIe rail; otherwise do not use it. |
| Dual 6-pin-to-8-pin adapter | Do not use. NVIDIA warns that this adapter type could damage the computer and “should not be used under any circumstances.” | There is no generic quality or wattage justification that overrides this warning. |
| Replace the PSU | Appropriate when the current unit lacks a supported 8-pin connection or documented alternative. | Match capacity and connectors to the exact graphics-card model. |
Do not confuse 6+2 with a six-pin plug
A PCIe 6+2 cable has six fixed pins plus a separate two-pin section. Together, they form the eight-pin GPU connector; connect both sections when the graphics card has an 8-pin socket. Seasonic describes this configuration and stresses checking the exact card model in its GPU cable guidance.

- Function: Solve the problem of graphics card power supply interface is not long enough.
- This 6-pin PCIe to 8-pin power converter cable, provide power to the graphics card from 6 Pin interface to 8 Pin, used for graphics card which needs external 8Pin power supply.
- The connector is designed for 6+2 Pin, which can be used as 8Pin or 6Pin.
- Compatible with graphics cards such as ASUS, Colorful, Galaxy, MSI, MAXSUN, Sapphire and XFX.
- Length:8.6’’ 22cm.
This is different from taking a cable that ends in only six pins and assuming an adapter makes it equivalent. Also check the label: CPU/EPS 4+4 cables are not interchangeable with PCIe GPU cables.
Modular PSU cables need exact-model approval
With a modular PSU, never buy a replacement cable solely because its connectors look identical or plug in. Modular pinouts can differ between brands and series, and an incorrect cable can damage components. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific compatibility information, such as Seasonic’s PSU Cable Compatibility Guide, before connecting any replacement 6+2 or 8-pin lead.

What to check before powering the system
- Identify the exact GPU model and read its required connector and PSU specifications.
- Identify the exact PSU model, not just its wattage or product family.
- Use a native PCIe 8-pin lead or an approved PCIe 6+2 lead whenever available.
- If considering a single 6-pin adapter, locate an explicit 150 W PCIe-rail rating in the PSU manual; if it is not documented, do not proceed.
- For modular units, verify the cable against the manufacturer’s exact-model compatibility table.
- Stop if the only proposed workaround is a dual-6-pin-to-8-pin adapter.
Because no GPU or PSU model was provided here, a model-specific compatibility or wattage recommendation would be unsafe. Those two model numbers are the information to obtain before choosing a cable or replacement supply.
Why the ratings are not a guarantee of safe operation
The 75 W and 150 W figures describe connector and rail capabilities, not a promise that every cable or adapter installed in a system can deliver them safely. PCIe add-in-card power is governed by the card, auxiliary connectors and the power supply’s wiring and protections. For standards context, see the PCI-SIG PCI Express Card Electromechanical Specification Revision 6.0.

- Dual 6-Pin Female to 8-Pin Male GPU Power Adapter Cable. Converts two, 6-pin PCI power cables (used for older graphics cards) into a single 8-pin PCI power cable (used for newer graphic cards).
- Connector A: Dual 6 pin PCIe Female
- Connector B: Single 8 pin PCIe male
- Gauge:18AWG
- Length: 14.5cm
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Do not plug a plain 6-pin PCIe connector into an 8-pin GPU input merely because you have a decent PSU. Use a native PCIe 8-pin or manufacturer-approved 6+2 cable. Treat a single 6-pin adapter as unsupported unless the exact PSU manual documents a 150 W-capable 6-pin PCIe rail, and never use a dual-6-pin-to-8-pin adapter.
