Yes. A standard Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch Zelda games, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. If you use your existing Switch cartridge or digital license, the console runs the Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo also sells dedicated Switch 2 Editions of both games, released on June 5, 2025, for players who want edition-specific features such as ZELDA NOTES.
What “standard Switch 2” compatibility means
The regular Nintendo Switch 2 hardware is enough to play these Zelda releases; you do not need a special Zelda-branded console. Nintendo identifies compatible Nintendo Switch games as playable on Switch 2, and both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have official Switch 2 Editions.
There are two different software versions to distinguish:
Recommended Free Tools
- Nintendo Switch version: the edition you already own on an original Switch cartridge or as a digital license. It can run on Switch 2, but it does not include features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition.
- Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: a dedicated release for each game. Nintendo launched both editions on June 5, 2025. These editions add Switch 2-specific features, including ZELDA NOTES.
Moving from the original Switch to Switch 2 therefore changes the console, but it does not automatically change the game software you own into the Switch 2 Edition.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Your two ways to play Zelda on Switch 2
Use an original physical cartridge
Insert your existing physical Nintendo Switch game card into the Switch 2. Nintendo states that a physical game card inserted into a Nintendo Switch console lets you play the Nintendo Switch version. In practical terms, your Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom cartridge remains the original Switch release when used on Switch 2.
This is the simplest option if you already own the game and only want to continue playing it on the newer console. The important limitation is that the original cartridge does not, by itself, provide features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition.
Use an original digital license
The same distinction applies to a digital purchase. Nintendo describes a virtual game card used on a Nintendo Switch console as running the Nintendo Switch version, without the additional features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition. Your digital ownership can therefore give you access to the game on Switch 2 while still launching the original Switch version.

Buy or obtain the Switch 2 Edition
Players who want the dedicated release can choose the Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo also explains that some Switch games offer free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance when played on Switch 2. The exact route available to you depends on the title and the edition or license you hold, so check the Nintendo listing for the game before completing a purchase.
Original Switch version versus Switch 2 Edition
| Purchase or ownership path | Version that runs on Switch 2 | Switch 2-exclusive features | ZELDA NOTES | Save-data point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Existing physical Nintendo Switch cartridge | Nintendo Switch version | Not included through the original copy | Not available as a Switch 2 Edition feature | See the title-specific transfer rules before changing versions |
| Existing digital Nintendo Switch license or virtual game card | Nintendo Switch version | Not included through the original copy | Not available as a Switch 2 Edition feature | See the title-specific transfer rules before changing versions |
| Dedicated Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition | Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Edition-specific additions identified by Nintendo | Exclusive to Switch 2 Editions | Use the transfer rules associated with this edition |
| Dedicated Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition | Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Edition-specific additions identified by Nintendo | Exclusive to Switch 2 Editions | The second Switch 2 Edition save file cannot be transferred to the original Switch version |
The table’s central distinction is software entitlement, not console capability: the same Switch 2 can run either the original Switch release or the dedicated Switch 2 Edition, depending on what you insert, download or obtain.
What the Zelda Switch 2 Editions add
Nintendo specifically identifies ZELDA NOTES as a feature exclusive to the Switch 2 Editions of these Zelda games. It is not part of the ordinary Switch version that launches from your old cartridge or digital license.
Nintendo’s general Switch 2 guidance says that individual games can receive free updates or paid upgrades bringing additional content or improved performance. That statement applies to Switch games generally; for these Zelda releases, the clearly documented Switch 2-only feature is ZELDA NOTES. Do not assume that every change associated with a Switch 2 Edition is present in the original Switch software.

How ZELDA NOTES works and what it requires
ZELDA NOTES is used through the Nintendo Switch app rather than being a feature you access solely from the cartridge or console menu. Nintendo lists three requirements:
- A Nintendo Account.
- Persistent internet access.
- A compatible smart device running the Nintendo Switch app.
If you own only the original Switch version, these requirements do not unlock ZELDA NOTES; the feature is tied to the Switch 2 Edition. Conversely, owning the Switch 2 Edition is not enough by itself if you cannot meet the app, account and connectivity requirements.
Because the feature depends on an external smart device and an ongoing connection, decide whether you actually want this companion functionality before paying for a different edition. If your priority is simply playing the main game on Switch 2, your existing Switch copy may already meet that need.

This does not establish that every save slot behaves identically across every edition. It means you should not treat all saves as freely interchangeable when moving between the Switch 2 Edition and the original Switch release. If you may return to an original Switch, keep the edition distinction in mind before creating or relying on an additional save file in the Switch 2 Edition.
The safest planning rule is to identify which edition you intend to use as your primary version before starting a new file. For Tears of the Kingdom in particular, regard the second Switch 2 Edition save file as subject to the documented one-way limitation rather than assuming it will work on the original Switch version.

Select the dedicated edition if ZELDA NOTES is important to you or if you specifically want the release Nintendo labels for Switch 2. The editions for both games launched June 5, 2025, so confirm that the product description says “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” rather than simply “Nintendo Switch.”

Check the edition before changing how you play
If you have an established save, decide whether you are continuing with the original Switch version or moving to the Switch 2 Edition. This is particularly important for Tears of the Kingdom, where Nintendo documents the restriction on transferring the second Switch 2 Edition save file back to the original Switch version.
How to start playing on a standard Switch 2
With a physical Switch copy
- Insert the original Nintendo Switch cartridge for Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom into the Switch 2.
- Launch the game from the console’s game menu.
- Expect the Nintendo Switch version, not the Switch 2 Edition’s exclusive features.
With a digital Switch copy
- Use the Nintendo Account and digital ownership associated with your original Switch purchase.
- Access the title as a virtual game card on the Switch 2.
- Launch the game, understanding that the original Switch version is the software entitlement described by Nintendo for that virtual game card.
With a Switch 2 Edition
- Obtain the dedicated Switch 2 Edition for the Zelda game you want to play, or use an applicable Nintendo upgrade route if one is offered for your ownership situation.
- Launch that edition rather than the original Switch release.
- If you want ZELDA NOTES, install or open the Nintendo Switch app on a compatible smart device, sign in with a Nintendo Account and maintain persistent internet access.
Common problems and the correct fix
“My cartridge works, but I cannot find ZELDA NOTES.”
This is expected when the cartridge is the original Switch release. Nintendo reserves ZELDA NOTES for the Switch 2 Editions. Verify which edition you own before troubleshooting the console or app.
“I bought the game digitally, so why am I seeing the Switch version?”
A digital Switch license is still the original Switch version when used as a virtual game card. Digital format does not automatically convert the license into the dedicated Switch 2 Edition.

“Can I move every save between versions?”
Do not assume that. Nintendo specifically states that the second save-data file created in the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Switch version. Treat save movement as edition-specific and check the title’s transfer behavior before switching versions.
“ZELDA NOTES will not connect.”
Check the three documented prerequisites: you must be using a Switch 2 Edition, have a Nintendo Account, use a compatible smart device with the Nintendo Switch app and maintain persistent internet access. Missing any one of these prevents use of the feature.
Bottom line for each Zelda game
- Breath of the Wild: an original Switch cartridge or digital license plays on a standard Switch 2 as the Nintendo Switch version. The dedicated Switch 2 Edition, released June 5, 2025, is the route to Switch 2-exclusive features such as ZELDA NOTES.
- Tears of the Kingdom: an original Switch copy also plays on a standard Switch 2 as the Nintendo Switch version. The Switch 2 Edition launched June 5, 2025, adds access to ZELDA NOTES and has a documented limitation: its second save-data file cannot be transferred to the original Switch version.
So, yes: the standard Nintendo Switch 2 can play Zelda. Keep your existing Switch copy for the original game version, or choose the relevant Switch 2 Edition when its exclusive features and edition-specific save behavior fit the way you plan to play.
