Yes—but only with the right console. The PS5 Digital Edition can play physical games after you attach Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1) to a compatible Slim console in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model groups. Sony does not list the original launch Digital Edition (CFI-1000 family) as compatible with this drive. You also need an internet connection to pair the drive with the console during setup.
The short answer
Sony sells two fundamentally different kinds of PS5 Digital Edition. The original launch model has no user-installable disc-drive option identified in Sony’s current compatibility information. The newer Slim Digital Edition is designed to accept a removable drive. Once the approved drive is attached and paired, the console can read supported physical PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, Blu-ray movies and DVDs.
That means the answer to “Can I add a disc drive to my PS5 Digital Edition?” depends first on the model group printed on the console or its packaging. A drive purchased for a compatible Slim will not turn an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition into a disc console.

Look for the CFI model group before purchasing anything. The model number is normally printed on the console label and its original box. The decisive part is the group, not merely the words “Digital Edition” or the console’s storage capacity.

If a listing only says “PS5 Digital” without a CFI group, treat that as insufficient information. Ask the seller for a photograph of the model label or confirm the model from the console’s system information before paying for the accessory.
What the removable drive lets you play
Installing the drive adds physical-media capability; it does not change how digital purchases work. Your downloaded games remain available, and you can continue using the PlayStation Store normally. The drive adds the following supported formats.

A disc is still required each time you launch a game installed from physical media. Installing the game data to the SSD does not make the console independent of the disc; the disc acts as the license check. A drive also does not convert a physical purchase into a digital license that can be played when the disc is absent.

- Confirm the model group: It must be CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Slim for a PS5 Digital Edition. The original CFI-1000 family is not identified as compatible.
- Confirm the accessory model: Make sure the listing identifies Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles, not a stand, replacement part or unrelated USB optical drive.
- Plan for internet access: Sony states, “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Arrange a working connection at the location where you will install it.
- Check the physical fit: The removable drive is made for the Slim-style chassis. Do not assume an accessory designed for one enclosure can be fitted to an older, larger launch console.
- Decide how you use games: The drive is most useful if you buy used discs, borrow games, resell them later or already own a physical collection. If every game you play is downloaded, the accessory may add little value beyond movie playback.
- Compare the complete cost: The relevant comparison is the price of a compatible Digital Slim plus the drive versus a PS5 Disc Edition. A retailer’s current price and stock can change, so check those separately at the time of purchase.
How to install and pair the PS5 Disc Drive
The exact shell-removal illustrations are supplied with the accessory and console manual, but the process follows a predictable sequence. Read the model-specific instructions before applying force to any panel.
- Shut down the console completely. Select the power menu and choose the option that turns the PS5 off, rather than Rest Mode. Wait until the indicator light is no longer lit.
- Disconnect the cables. Unplug the AC cable and remove HDMI, USB and network cables so you can place the console on a stable, clean surface.
- Orient the Slim console as shown in the manual. The removable outer panel and the drive bay are designed for a particular position. Do not attempt to open an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition in search of the same bay.
- Remove the designated Slim panel. Follow the manual’s grip points and sliding direction. If a panel does not move with moderate, even pressure, stop and recheck the orientation instead of prying around the edge.
- Insert CFI-ZDD1 into the drive bay. Align the connector and guide rails, then press the drive into place until it is seated. A drive that is not fully aligned can prevent the panel from closing or cause detection errors.
- Reinstall the matching cover. The drive cover and the standard Digital Slim cover are not interchangeable in every position. Use the cover supplied for the configuration shown in the instructions.
- Reconnect power and display equipment. Turn on the console and connect it to the internet through Wi-Fi or a wired network.
- Complete the pairing prompt. During initial setup, the PS5 connects to Sony’s service to pair the drive with the console. This one-time requirement is why an offline setup cannot be completed.
- Install any requested system or accessory update. Allow the console to finish before inserting a game disc. Interrupting power during an update can leave the drive unavailable until the setup is repeated.
- Test with a clean supported disc. Insert a PS5 game disc, PS4 game disc known to be compatible, or a movie disc. Confirm that the console recognizes it before discarding the packaging.
Keep the drive’s packaging and proof of purchase until you have completed pairing and tested more than one disc type. If you later remove the drive, the Digital Slim returns to download-only operation until the drive is installed again.
Using physical PS5 and PS4 games after setup
PS5 game discs
Insert the disc with the label facing the direction shown by the console’s orientation. The PS5 will generally copy required game data to internal storage and use the inserted disc to verify ownership when you start the game. Updates, downloadable content and saved data continue to use the console’s normal storage and network features.

Buying a physical PS5 game does not guarantee that every bonus, upgrade or downloadable item is on the disc. Those details depend on the individual game, but the drive itself does not restrict ordinary PS5 disc installation once pairing is complete.

PS4 game discs
The accessory manual lists compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs. “Compatible” matters: the drive provides the physical-disc reader, while game compatibility is determined by the title and the PS5’s supported backward-compatibility list. If a particular PS4 disc is not supported by the PS5, installing the drive will not make it playable.
Movie discs
With the drive attached, the console can read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD video media. This makes the Slim Digital Edition a possible replacement for a separate disc player, but it does not remove the requirement to pair the accessory first. Keep the console’s system software current if a movie disc is not recognized, then test another known-good disc to distinguish a media problem from a hardware or installation problem.
Digital Edition with add-on drive versus built-in Disc Edition
Both approaches can provide access to physical games, but they suit different buying situations.

Why the original Digital Edition is different
The launch PS5 Digital Edition belongs to the CFI-1000 family and was sold as an all-digital console with no disc drive. Sony’s current removable-drive listing names the newer CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Slim groups instead. That distinction is easy to miss because retailers may shorten all of these names to “PS5 Digital.”
Do not rely on the console’s appearance, storage capacity or purchase date to identify compatibility. Use the CFI group. If it is not CFI-2000 or CFI-2100, treat the add-on option as unconfirmed and choose a console with an integrated drive or obtain written confirmation from Sony for that exact model.
Troubleshooting common problems
The console does not detect the drive
- Power the PS5 off completely, unplug it, remove and reseat the drive, then reinstall the cover without pinching the connector.
- Confirm that the console is a CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Slim (or a listed PS5 Pro configuration) and that the accessory is CFI-ZDD1.
- Reconnect to the internet and look for the pairing prompt or a system-software update.
- Test a clean, commercially produced disc. Scratches, dirt or an unsupported format can look like a drive fault.
Pairing cannot finish
Check that the PS5 has working internet access rather than only a local network connection. Restart the router and console, then retry the setup. If the console remains offline, the drive cannot complete Sony’s required pairing step.

Installing the drive does not make every PS4 title playable. Verify that the specific game is supported on PS5, then clean the disc and test another compatible PS4 or PS5 disc. If several known-good discs fail, reseat the drive and contact Sony support with the console and accessory model numbers.
A movie disc is not recognized
Confirm that the disc is one of the listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD formats, that the drive is paired, and that the disc is free of visible damage. Testing a second disc helps identify whether the issue is the media or the drive installation.
A practical buying decision
- Identify the console. Record the complete CFI model group, not just “Digital Edition.”
- Choose your media needs. Count physical PS5 games, compatible PS4 discs and movie discs you expect to use, including borrowed or used games.
- Compare total hardware. Add the current price of CFI-ZDD1 to the Digital Slim price and compare that total with a Disc Edition.
- Account for setup. Ensure internet access is available for the required pairing and allow time to install the drive correctly.
- Buy only after compatibility is clear. Keep the receipt and verify the drive with a supported disc before the return period ends.
Final verdict
You can play physical PS5 games on a Digital Edition only when it is a compatible Slim model—CFI-2000 or CFI-2100—and you install Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. The drive also supports compatible PS4 game discs and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD movies, but internet access is required to pair it during setup. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not listed for this upgrade, so model identification should come before any accessory purchase.
