What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. You can play Half-Life: Alyx on a Meta Quest headset by connecting it to a Windows PC running the game and SteamVR. Alyx is a PC VR game, not a standalone Quest title, so the headset alone cannot run it. You can connect by cable with Meta Link or stream wirelessly using Steam Link or Meta Link/Air Link.
What you need to play Alyx on Quest
Valve’s Steam listing marks Half-Life: Alyx as VR-only and says, “This game requires a VR headset in order to play.” The Quest serves as the headset, display, and controller system; the Windows PC does the game processing and runs SteamVR. Valve’s published minimum PC specifications are:
- 64-bit Windows 10
- Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor
- 12 GB RAM
- NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 graphics card with 6 GB VRAM
- SteamVR and a VR headset
These are Valve’s minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. Check your PC against them before troubleshooting a headset connection. Valve’s Steam page for Half-Life: Alyx lists the game requirements.
Choose how to connect the Quest
All three routes connect the Quest to a PC; the differences are the connection method and software. Valve’s model list for Steam Link is not identical to Meta’s Link compatibility list.

| Option | Connection and PC software | Published Quest compatibility | Network or cable detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired Meta Link | USB-C data cable; Meta PC connection software, plus Steam and SteamVR for Alyx | Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro (Meta) | Meta developer hardware guidance recommends a USB-C cable capable of 5 GB/s or higher; this is not a universal consumer compatibility guarantee. |
| Wireless Steam Link | Wi-Fi streaming; Steam and SteamVR on the PC | Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro (Valve’s listed models) | Valve specifies a 5 GHz router channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum. |
| Wireless Meta Link / Air Link | Wi-Fi connection using Meta’s PC connection software, plus Steam and SteamVR | Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro (Meta) | Meta’s cited hardware guidance confirms Wi-Fi as an option but does not establish a universal network baseline. |
Sources: Valve’s Steam Link support page, Meta’s Link hardware guidance, and Meta’s Link hardware compatibility information. Steam Link and Meta Link are separate products; Meta listing Quest 3S for Link does not establish Steam Link support for that headset.
Set up wired Meta Link
- Install Meta’s PC connection software on the Windows gaming PC and install Steam if needed.
- Connect the Quest to the PC with a compatible USB-C data cable. Check that the cable supports data, and that its connectors fit the headset and an available PC port; a charging-only cable is not sufficient for a wired Link connection.
- Complete the connection flow in Meta’s PC software and headset. Exact consumer menu labels can change, so follow the current prompts shown by Meta rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Open Steam, start SteamVR, then launch Half-Life: Alyx from the Steam library.
Meta’s cited cable guidance is developer-oriented, so treat its 5 GB/s recommendation as a hardware reference, not a guarantee that every cable or PC port will work. Meta’s documentation describes USB-C data cabling for wired Link; it does not say that only Meta-branded cables are required.

Set up wireless Steam Link
- On the PC, install and open Steam and SteamVR.
- Connect the PC and Quest to a wireless network with a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 or better, as specified by Valve.
- Install and open the Steam Link app on a Quest model Valve lists: Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro.
- Follow Steam Link’s on-screen connection flow to pair with the PC, then launch Alyx through SteamVR.
Valve describes Steam Link as streaming games from the Steam library on the computer to Meta Quest. The connection is wireless, so a Link cable is not part of this setup.
Use wireless Meta Link or Air Link
Meta’s Link hardware guidance indicates that Link can connect over Wi-Fi as an alternative to USB-C. The overall arrangement remains the same: the PC runs Steam, SteamVR, and Alyx, while the Quest connects through Meta’s PC software. Use Meta’s current consumer setup support for the pairing flow and labels; the cited documentation does not provide a complete current consumer walkthrough or a universal network recommendation.
