In a 2020 demonstration, the game streamed through Microsoft’s xCloud service on an Android device, then appeared on a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator by screen mirroring. The fridge served as the display; a controller handled gameplay.
What the fridge demonstration actually showed
On October 13, 2020, Windows Central reported that Instagram user Richard Mallard had streamed DOOM Eternal to a Samsung smart fridge. The report described an Android version of xCloud sideloaded onto a device and noted letterboxing on the refrigerator’s portrait-oriented screen. A contemporaneous SBT Games report also described the game appearing on a smart refrigerator through Xbox Game Pass/xCloud.
That is evidence of a streaming-and-display demonstration, not a DOOM Eternal version installed on the refrigerator. The game ran through the cloud-gaming route, while the Family Hub panel displayed the mirrored image.
How playing on a Family Hub works
- Stream the game: Xbox’s current DOOM Eternal listing identifies it as cloud playable with eligible Game Pass tiers and gives the control method as “Play with controller.” Cloud availability and subscription requirements can vary by region and may change.
- Use a compatible device: The original demonstration was reported as using an Android/xCloud route. The cloud stream is rendered on a supported device, not by the refrigerator itself.
- Mirror to the fridge: Samsung’s Family Hub screen-mirroring instructions say a Samsung phone or tablet can mirror to the Family Hub panel. Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, select Smart View on the phone or tablet, and allow the connection on the refrigerator.
- Play with a controller: Xbox labels the game’s control method “Play with controller.” The refrigerator touchscreen is not documented as running the full game locally or replacing a game controller.
What to expect from the experience
The 2020 report noted portrait-screen letterboxing, so the game image did not fill the fridge’s tall panel. The reviewed reports do not publish measured latency, frame rate, or image-quality results for this setup; those details should not be assumed from the demonstration.

#1 Best Overall
- Bespoke 4-Door Flex with Family Hub+ in Charcoal Family Hub panel, Stainless Steel
Samsung’s instructions describe mirroring from a Samsung phone or tablet to Family Hub, not support across every Samsung refrigerator. The exact refrigerator model and the supported phone, cloud service, and regional availability all matter.
What you need to try it
- A Samsung Family Hub refrigerator whose panel supports Smart View mirroring.
- A compatible Samsung phone or tablet, with both it and the refrigerator connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Access to DOOM Eternal through a currently eligible cloud-gaming option in your region.
- An Xbox-compatible controller and a network connection suitable for cloud gaming.
DOOM Eternal was developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks; Xbox lists its release date as March 20, 2020. The fridge demonstration changes where the stream is viewed, not where the game executes.
