How to decide whether your cup is suitable
Check the cup itself or its packaging for microwave-use labeling or instructions, and follow those directions along with your microwave oven’s manual. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that microwaves pass through materials such as paper, plastic, and glass, but containers can still become hot from their contents and some plastics can melt. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advises using utensils labeled for microwave use. If a cup is unmarked or its intended use is unclear, use a microwave-safe heatproof glass measuring cup or mug instead. The USDA identifies heatproof glass as safe and warns against repurposing cold-storage containers such as margarine tubs, cottage-cheese cartons, and whipped-topping bowls. Paper cups and plastic cups are not interchangeable categories
There is no blanket rule that every paper cup is safe or every plastic cup is unsafe. Suitability depends on the particular cup and its intended use. The official guidance cited here does not approve generic disposable paper cups or test every kind of paper or plastic cup. Unsuitable containers may melt or burn, and some materials may allow chemicals to migrate into food. When the cup’s label does not clearly say it is intended for microwave heating, choose a labeled microwave-safe glass vessel.

Water can superheat and erupt
Water heated by itself in a clean cup can become superheated: hotter than its usual boiling point without visibly boiling. Moving the cup or adding something such as instant coffee can trigger a sudden eruption of boiling water. The FDA reports receiving accounts of serious burns and scalds to people’s hands and faces from this event; it does not provide a count or rate on the cited page.
The FDA warns: “If super-heating has occurred, a slight disturbance or movement such as picking up the cup, or pouring in a spoon full of instant coffee, may result in a violent eruption with the boiling water exploding out of the cup.” Follow the heating-time recommendations in your microwave’s manual and avoid overheating the water.
