Yes, you can make a PNG larger in pixel dimensions, but ordinary resizing cannot recover detail that was never captured. An editor creates additional pixels by interpolation, so a strongly enlarged image may look softer. AI upscalers can generate a more convincing enlargement, yet their added texture, lettering, or facial detail is an estimate—not proof of the original scene.
First decide whether you need more screen pixels or a different print size. Those are separate operations.
What “higher resolution” means for a PNG
People use “resolution” for two different measurements:
- Pixel dimensions: the raster’s width and height, such as 1,200 × 800 pixels. Resampling changes these numbers and creates or removes pixel samples.
- Print resolution (PPI/DPI metadata): the relationship between existing pixels and physical print size. Changing this value without resampling changes the intended print dimensions, not the amount of image data.
A 1,200 × 800 PNG set to 300 PPI still contains 960,000 pixels. Entering 600 PPI does not turn it into a 2,400 × 1,600 image. Conversely, changing the print size while resampling can alter both the physical-size metadata and the pixel count.

Choose the result you actually need
| Goal | Correct operation | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Larger image for a website, presentation, or display | Scale or upscale pixel dimensions | Width and height in pixels increase; new pixels are estimated or generated |
| Same pixels printed at a different physical size | Change print size/PPI with resampling disabled | Print dimensions or density metadata changes; pixel count stays the same |
| Larger print with enough pixels | Set the physical size and enable resampling | Pixel dimensions are recalculated for the requested output |
| Sharper-looking enlargement | Compare conventional interpolation with an AI upscaler | Software estimates or synthesizes detail; artifacts and invented features are possible |
Safe workflow for increasing PNG pixel dimensions
- Preserve the original. Make a copy before changing anything. Keep the untouched PNG so you can try another method or return to the source.
- Inspect the current dimensions. In your editor, open the image properties or image-size dialog and record the width, height, color mode, and file format.
- Set the target dimensions. Enter the required width or height in pixels. Keep the chain, lock, or “constrain aspect ratio” control enabled unless intentional distortion is part of the design. If you change width and height independently, circles can become ovals and people can look stretched.
- Select a resampling method. A conventional interpolation method produces predictable results but does not restore source detail. GIMP’s documented Image → Scale Image command is a direct way to change pixel count. Its documentation warns that interpolation calculates missing pixels rather than adding new detail, and that larger enlargements can appear more blurred.
- Preview at the delivery size. Examine text, faces, thin lines, repeating patterns, and hard edges at 100% and at the size people will actually see or print. A result that looks acceptable when zoomed out may reveal halos or jagged edges at full size.
- Export a new PNG. Keep the enlarged copy separate from the source. Reopen the exported file and verify its pixel dimensions; some applications show a preview that is not the actual saved size.
How much can you enlarge?
There is no universal safe enlargement factor. A simple icon with broad, clean shapes may tolerate a larger increase than a low-light photograph or tiny text. The source’s focus, compression history, noise, and subject matter matter more than a single ratio. Do not claim that a particular 2×, 4×, or 8× setting guarantees quality.
Conventional interpolation: predictable, not restorative
Interpolation estimates color values between existing samples. It can make a file meet a pixel-dimension requirement, but it cannot reveal lettering hidden by blur, recover a face that was never resolved, or recreate an original texture with certainty. Strong enlargement commonly produces softness; sharpening can increase edge contrast but may also create halos and ringing.
Use conventional scaling when you need deterministic processing, a faithful representation of the source, or a technical asset where invented detail would be misleading. For screenshots, diagrams, and evidence images, retain the original alongside the enlarged derivative and label the derivative as resized.
AI upscaling: potentially clearer, inherently estimated
AI upscalers use a learned model to infer plausible edges, textures, and structures. They can look better than basic interpolation, especially on photographs, but the result is an enhancement rather than a guaranteed recovery. Inspect important regions for altered eyes, letters, logos, repeated patterns, or geometries that were not present in the source.

Adobe Photoshop Generative Upscale
Adobe’s Photoshop Help documentation (updated May 20, 2026) describes 2× and 4× output choices. The page lists model-dependent limits: Firefly Upscaler up to 6,144 × 6,144 pixels, Topaz Gigapixel up to 56 megapixels with a premium subscription, and Topaz Bloom up to 9 megapixels with a premium subscription. Availability and limits can change, so confirm the model and account requirements in your current Photoshop build. Treat the output as generated enhancement, not an archival reconstruction.
Adobe Camera Raw Super Resolution
Adobe also documents a Super Resolution workflow in Camera Raw that creates a larger DNG file. That is important for a PNG task: the documented output is a DNG, so you would need an additional export step if your deliverable must remain PNG. Do not assume this workflow is identical to Photoshop’s PNG-oriented Generative Upscale.
Microsoft Photos Super Resolution
Microsoft documents Super Resolution in Photos as a locally processed, non-generative feature exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. It offers 1×, 2×, 4×, or 8× enhancement settings. Microsoft’s example shows a 256 × 256 image becoming 1,012 × 1,012; that is the company’s illustration, not a universal recommendation or quality guarantee. Eligibility, controls, and supported hardware can change.
Changing PNG DPI without enlarging pixels
If a printer asks for a particular DPI or PPI, ask whether it means physical dimensions or a required pixel count. In GIMP’s documented Print Size operation, changing print dimensions or resolution with resampling disabled changes the print relationship while preserving the existing pixels. This is appropriate when the printer or layout application should place the same image at a different size.

- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
For example, a 3,000 × 2,000 image placed at 300 PPI is 10 × 6.67 inches. At 150 PPI, the same pixels represent 20 × 13.33 inches. Nothing new was added; the pixels are simply spread over a larger area. If the requested physical size requires more pixels, enable resampling and inspect the resulting file rather than editing only the DPI field.
Quality checks before you deliver the enlarged PNG
- Confirm the saved width and height, not just the editor’s zoom percentage.
- Check that the aspect ratio matches the source unless cropping or distortion was deliberate.
- Inspect small type, faces, logos, diagonal lines, and repeating textures at 100%.
- Compare the enlarged copy with the untouched original so generated or sharpened details are visible to you.
- Ensure transparency is still present if the source used an alpha channel.
- Open the exported PNG in a second viewer or editor to catch export or color-profile surprises.
- Keep a filename or metadata note indicating the scale method and target dimensions.
Common problems and fixes
The image is bigger but still blurry
Scaling adds pixels, not source detail. Try a modest enlargement, compare another interpolation method, or test an AI upscale on a duplicate. If the original is badly out of focus, find a higher-resolution original whenever possible.
The subject looks stretched
The width and height were changed independently. Undo, relink the aspect-ratio control, and enter only one target dimension; crop separately if a different shape is required.
Changing DPI did not change the pixel dimensions
That is expected when resampling is disabled. DPI/PPI metadata controls placement and print size. Enable resampling only when you truly need additional pixels.

AI created strange text or facial features
Generated detail is not reliable evidence. Try a lower scale, conventional interpolation, a different model, or the original source. For legal, scientific, journalistic, or evidentiary work, preserve and present the unaltered PNG.
The output is not a PNG
Some workflows, including Adobe Camera Raw Super Resolution, produce another format such as DNG. Export the resulting image to PNG and verify dimensions, transparency, and appearance after export.
The file became unexpectedly large
Pixel count grows in both dimensions: doubling width and height creates roughly four times as many pixels before compression. Use the smallest dimensions that meet the requirement, avoid repeated resaving, and compare PNG compression settings without sacrificing required transparency or color fidelity.

Bottom line
To increase a PNG’s resolution in the pixel sense, resample it to larger dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio. Conventional interpolation creates estimated pixels and cannot restore missing detail. AI upscaling may look sharper but can invent or distort content, so inspect critical areas and keep the original. If your real requirement is print size, change PPI metadata instead of enlarging pixels; resample only when the physical output needs more image data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will converting a JPEG to PNG make it higher resolution?
No. Changing formats does not increase pixel dimensions or restore detail; it only changes how the existing image is stored.
