Does a channel need uploaded videos to go live?
YouTube’s published live-streaming requirements do not specify a minimum number of uploaded videos. A channel with no uploads therefore is not identified in those requirements as disqualified. However, YouTube’s help pages do not explicitly address or guarantee the zero-upload case, so the practical test is whether live streaming is available for your channel in YouTube Studio.
For general live streaming, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general start page also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
Requirements depend on how you stream

Check live-streaming access in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio while signed in to the channel you want to use.
- Go to Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility. YouTube’s phone-verification instructions describe this area as the place to see available features and complete verification for features that require it. Details are in See and unlock features with phone verification.
- Check whether live streaming is available and whether phone verification is requested. YouTube says phone verification unlocks access to live streaming, but restrictions on the channel can still affect feature access.
- If you have just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for your first mobile stream to become available. This delay is stated for mobile streaming, not as a universal waiting period for every method.
If Go Live is unavailable
- Verification is incomplete: Complete the phone-verification flow shown in Feature eligibility.
- Activation is still pending: If you are setting up mobile streaming for the first time, wait up to 24 hours after enabling it.
- Your channel has a live-streaming restriction: Check for policy or copyright issues that may have disabled the feature. YouTube’s guidance is at Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
- You are trying to stream from the mobile app: Confirm that you meet the 50-subscriber threshold and device requirements. These conditions apply to mobile streaming and should not be confused with the general requirements for computer streaming.
- You are trying to work around a restriction with another channel: YouTube says a restricted account cannot use another channel to evade the restriction. Resolve the restriction rather than switching channels to bypass it.
What lower subscriber counts mean for mobile streams
For channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube says mobile live-stream viewers may be limited and archived streams may be set to private by default. YouTube also says the mobile audience limitation may take several weeks to update after a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers. Access to mobile streaming is not lost unless the channel falls below 50 subscribers. These audience and archive behaviors are separate from whether a channel is permitted to start a mobile stream.
