Yes, sometimes. A console being discontinued does not automatically end online play. What matters is whether the console’s network service is still running, whether the game’s publisher still operates its servers, and whether the game needs an internet connection to work. A store can close while multiplayer continues, or a game can lose its online features while its offline modes remain playable.
What determines whether an old console can still play online?
There are three separate things to check: the console platform’s network services, the individual game’s servers, and the game’s connection requirements. A discontinued console may still connect to an active platform service, but a publisher can shut down a game’s servers independently. A game that requires a server connection may stop working altogether; one with an offline campaign may remain playable without multiplayer.
- Console network: Is the platform’s online service still operating for this console?
- Game servers: Does the publisher still support the specific game and platform?
- Game design: Does the mode you want require online communication, or can it run offline?
Store availability is a separate question from all three. Closing a digital store does not, by itself, shut down multiplayer servers or erase a game already installed.
What happened to online play on older consoles?
Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
Nintendo ended online play and other features that use online communication for 3DS and Wii U software at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. That includes online co-op, internet rankings, and data distribution. Nintendo says modes that do not require online communication remain usable. At the time of its support notice, Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter remained usable, though Nintendo warned those services could end in the future. Nintendo’s service-termination notice has the details.

The Wii U and 3DS eShops had already stopped accepting new purchases on March 27, 2023. Nintendo said users could continue redownloading previously purchased games and DLC and receiving software updates “for the foreseeable future.” That language is not a permanent guarantee. Nintendo’s eShop FAQ explains the purchase and redownload distinction.
Xbox 360
Microsoft closed the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Previously purchased games and DLC remain playable and redownloadable, and physical-disc games remain playable on Xbox 360 hardware. Microsoft said multiplayer and connecting with friends would continue only as long as the game publisher still supports that game’s servers. Supported titles can also be played through backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with cloud saves continuing for supported games. See Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Store announcement for the qualifications.

PlayStation: service status varies by game
PlayStation maintains a game-specific list of decommissioned servers rather than one universal shutdown date for older-console online play. Its notice says the PS3 user-generated-content features in inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood ended on August 31, 2026, while their offline campaigns remain playable. By contrast, GUNS UP! became unplayable when its online services ended because it requires an online connection. Other listed games retain some offline modes after multiplayer ends. Check the entry for the exact title and platform on PlayStation’s decommissioned-server page.
PlayStation says previously purchased content remains downloadable for the foreseeable future, while the ability to play owned content is subject to each game’s online features and service availability. This is conditional, not a guarantee that every online feature or download will remain available indefinitely. See PlayStation’s service notice.

Nintendo Wii
Nintendo ended new Wii Shop Channel purchases on January 30, 2019. Its support page says already downloaded WiiWare and Virtual Console games could still be played, and that redownload and transfer services would end at a future date. The page does not establish the current status of redownloads, so check Nintendo’s current support information before relying on access to an old purchase. Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel FAQ covers the closure.
How to check whether a particular game still works online
- Search the console maker’s current service notices for the exact game and console model. A platform-wide announcement may not list every game-level change.
- Check the publisher’s support notice if the console maker says the publisher controls the game’s servers.
- Identify the mode you want to use. Online multiplayer, local multiplayer, rankings, downloadable features, and offline single-player can have different outcomes.
- For a digital copy, confirm redownload access. “For the foreseeable future” means access is expected to continue, not that it is guaranteed permanently.
- For a disc, check compatibility and connection requirements. A physical copy can let you play compatible offline content, but it cannot keep a publisher’s server online.
Can a store closure or physical disc preserve access?
A store closure usually concerns buying content, not whether an already-owned copy can connect to multiplayer. The Xbox 360 example makes the distinction clear: Microsoft said purchased content and discs would remain playable, while online multiplayer depended on publisher server support. Nintendo and PlayStation likewise describe continued redownloads for some previously purchased content, with qualifications about future service availability.

For a disc, confirm that the game works on the console you own and whether its desired mode requires an internet connection. If you are considering a newer console, check that the specific game is supported through backward compatibility; compatibility does not guarantee that its online servers are active.

Some communities may offer unofficial network services, but these are separate projects and do not restore official platform or publisher support. Nintendo warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may create unexpected security risks. Assess any such service on its own terms rather than assuming it is safe or available.
