Usually, no. A Game Pass download grants access through a subscription license; it does not transfer ownership of the game. When the title leaves the catalog—or your subscription ends—the license stops authorizing play, even if the game remains installed. To keep playing, buy the specific game edition for your platform, or keep an eligible subscription only while the title remains included. Add-ons purchased for the game do not unlock the base game after removal.
What changes when a Game Pass game leaves?
Game Pass separates the files on your device from the right to use them. Downloading a title installs the game data, but the entitlement to launch and play it is checked against your Microsoft account and the current catalog. That entitlement exists only while the game is included and your subscription is active.
Dovetail Games Support, in an article updated August 27, 2026, describes the rule directly: included games can be played “so long as you have an active subscription.” Once the title leaves, “you will need to purchase the game if you wish to continue playing.” The installed files may stay on your Xbox or PC until you remove them, but their presence is not proof of ownership. A license check can prevent the game from starting or stop access when you try to continue.

Your access normally lasts through the paid subscription period, subject to the plan’s terms, but it does not convert into a permanent license. Removal and subscription expiry are two different events that produce the same practical result: the Game Pass entitlement is no longer valid.

How to keep access legally
Buy the game before or after removal
Purchase the exact Xbox game that matches your console or Windows setup, edition, and region. Xbox Wire has advised members to use the discount available to subscribers when a game appears in the “Leaving Soon” collection. A purchase creates a separate game license rather than extending the temporary catalog entitlement.
Buying before removal can be useful because the member discount may apply while the title is still included. Buying after removal can also work when the game is still sold digitally or available in a compatible physical edition. Availability, price, and edition support vary by title and region, so verify the store listing instead of assuming that every Game Pass version remains for sale.
Renew only when the title is still included
If the game has not yet left, renewing an eligible subscription can restore access without buying it. This is a recurring cost, however, and it provides access only for as long as the title remains in the catalog and the subscription stays active. Renewal is not a way to retain a game permanently after its removal.
Use a physical edition when appropriate
A compatible disc is another form of game ownership, but the edition still has to match the platform and region requirements. Check whether the physical release is for the console generation you use and whether it contains the version you intend to play. A disc can be preferable if you want a transferable copy, while a digital purchase is tied to the Microsoft account that bought it.

The cited licensing rules establish the access distinction, but they do not set one universal price or guarantee the same multiplayer benefits for every title. Treat those as separate checks before deciding.

What happens to your save and achievements?
Buying on the same account
When you buy the game, sign in with the Microsoft account and Xbox gamertag that you used for Game Pass. The purchased license is then evaluated for that account. In many cases, the existing installation can be started again without downloading the entire game, although an update or a different edition may require additional files.
Your progress is not the same thing as the Game Pass license. Saves, achievements, and settings can remain associated with your profile even while you cannot launch the title. The exact behavior depends on the game’s save system and the platform on which you played, so do not assume that a console save automatically transfers to every PC release.
Play Anywhere titles
Microsoft’s usage rules say that supported Xbox Play Anywhere games keep progress with the gamertag, allowing continuation on another supported device. That promise is limited to titles that actually participate in Play Anywhere and to their supported Xbox and Windows versions. It should not be generalized to every Game Pass game, every cross-platform release, or every generation.
Different editions or accounts
A save may fail to appear if you purchase a different edition, use another Microsoft account, switch to a platform with a separate save format, or install a release that does not share cross-save support. Before buying, compare the store listing with the version you played and verify the account shown in the Xbox app or console profile.
Does buying DLC mean you own the base game?
No. An expansion, season pass, currency pack, or other add-on is a separate entitlement. Dovetail Games Support explicitly warns that customers who purchased add-ons while a game was in Game Pass “will still need to purchase the game to continue playing after it leaves.”

That means DLC can remain attached to your account while the base game is unavailable. Once you buy a compatible copy of the base game, the add-ons may become usable again, provided they match the same title, platform, region, and edition. Buying DLC solely to preserve access is therefore ineffective.
- Base game: the license that lets you launch the main title.
- Add-on: extra content that normally requires a separately licensed base game.
- Subscription entitlement: temporary access while the game is included and the subscription is active.
How to check whether a game is leaving
Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 guidance says members receive about two weeks’ notice and can find the “Leaving Soon” collection in the mobile app, the Xbox app on Windows 10, or the Game Pass section on console. Current interface names can vary by app version, but the workflow is consistent:
- Open the Game Pass app, the Xbox app, or the Game Pass area on your console.
- Navigate to the catalog’s Leaving Soon collection or notice.
- Select the game and read the listed removal date, supported platform, and edition details.
- Decide whether to finish the game during the notice period, renew an eligible subscription, or purchase the matching edition.
- If you buy it, complete the purchase with the Microsoft account that holds your saves and then sign in with that account on the device where you play.
The notice is an opportunity to plan, not a guarantee that every title will remain available for exactly the same number of days in every region. Store availability and catalog timing can differ, so use the date shown for your account and location.
What to do when the game stops launching
Confirm whether the removal or subscription expiry caused it
Check the Game Pass listing and your subscription status first. If the game is marked as leaving or has already disappeared, an installed copy will not restore the entitlement. If your subscription expired, renewing an eligible plan may restore access only if the title is still included.
Verify the account and edition
Open the account profile on the console or Xbox app and confirm that it is the account that played the Game Pass version. After purchasing, check your order history or owned-games list for the same title and platform. A console edition, PC edition, cloud-only listing, and cross-generation bundle can have different rights.

Do not delete the installation unnecessarily
Keeping the files installed can save download time after a successful purchase, but it cannot bypass the license check. If the store offers a different package, an update or reinstall may be required. Back up or synchronize any local saves according to the game’s supported method before removing data.
Check services separately
Some games require an online service, a platform multiplayer entitlement, or a publisher account in addition to the game license. The fact that you bought the title does not establish one universal rule for those services. Follow the requirements shown on the game’s store page and in its support documentation.

“I downloaded it, so I own it.”
A download is a copy of the software files. Ownership or long-term access comes from a purchased license, not from the download itself.
“The game is still on my hard drive, so it should work offline.”
The installed files and the authorization to use them are separate. A license check can fail even when every game file is present.

“Buying it means every version and device is covered.”
Rights depend on the edition, platform, region, and any Play Anywhere or cross-buy designation shown for that product. Check those details before paying.
“A save is guaranteed to transfer everywhere.”
Play Anywhere provides a gamertag-linked progress path only for supported titles and devices. Other games may keep saves platform-specific.
What the licensing rules say
Microsoft’s usage rules distinguish user and device licenses for purchased Xbox digital games from subscription access. That is why a purchased title can remain available even when a Game Pass entitlement ends. A June 14, 2024 accepted Microsoft Q&A answer summarizes the practical effect: buying a game makes it yours regardless of a subscription and even if the game is later removed from the store. Because that answer is community content rather than a universal product contract, rely on the purchase terms displayed for your specific game and region.

Dovetail’s support wording is the clearest statement for the subscription case: active membership is required for included games, and purchase is required after departure. Xbox Wire’s leaving-soon notices and member discounts provide the planning window. Together, these rules explain why finishing a game, buying it, and relying on DLC are three different choices.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the game still listed in Game Pass, and what removal date is shown for your region?
- Will you finish it before that date, or do you expect to return months later?
- Is the exact Xbox or Windows edition you need still sold, and does it match your platform?
- Are your saves tied to the same Microsoft account and gamertag you will use after purchase?
- Does the title support Play Anywhere or another documented cross-save feature?
- Have you checked multiplayer, publisher-account, and other service requirements separately?
- Are you buying the base game rather than only an expansion or season pass?
If the answers point to short-term play, use the notice period. If you want dependable long-term access, buy the matching base game. Either way, the downloaded Game Pass copy by itself does not become permanent ownership.
