Yes, you can use a browser to message someone or forward a Steam game-session link that a host has already created. But Steam’s browser chat is not a documented way to create a new live-game invitation or host a session by itself. For Remote Play Together, the host launches a supported game through Steam and starts the invitation from the game or Steam overlay. A phone can receive a host’s Remote Play Together invitation through Steam Chat, which opens the stream in Steam Link.
The key distinction is whether you mean “without bringing the desktop client window to the front” or “without Steam and the game running on a host computer at all.” Forwarding an existing link can avoid the first; creating a Remote Play Together session cannot avoid the second.
What counts as a Steam game invite?
“Invite” can mean several different things on Steam, and the answer depends on which one you mean. A chat message, friend request, Remote Play Together session link, and an invitation to a game’s online lobby are separate actions with different starting points.

| What you’re sending | What it does | Where the documented action starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chat message | Lets you communicate with a Steam friend. | Steam Friends & Chat, available in a browser as well as the desktop client. |
| Friend invite link | Lets someone add you as a Steam friend; it does not invite them into a running game. | Steam’s friend-invite feature. |
| Remote Play Together invitation or session link | Lets someone join a supported local-multiplayer game streamed from the host’s computer. | The host starts a supported game through Steam, then invites from the game or Steam overlay; Valve also describes copying a session link from the Friends list while the game is running. |
| Online-lobby invitation | Invites someone into a multiplayer lobby implemented by a particular game. | The game’s own multiplayer interface or invitation flow; options vary by title. |
| Game gift | Transfers a purchased game, not access to a live session. | Steam’s game-gifting flow. |
Steam Support says Friends & Chat is available in a web browser, which establishes browser-based messaging—not a universal browser control for inviting someone into gameplay. No figure establishes how many Steam games support browser-generated gameplay invitations, and the available official material does not establish a universal browser-only “Send Game Invite” button. - 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. - 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Can I invite someone from Steam web chat?
You can message a friend from Steam’s browser-based Friends & Chat, and you can paste a valid game-session URL there if the host has already created one. The browser chat is the delivery channel in that case; it is not what creates the live session.
This distinction matters because a friend-add link and a game-session link may both be shareable links, but they do different jobs. A friend link helps establish a Steam friendship. A Remote Play Together session link is generated in the context of a supported, running game so another person can join that session. Sending a friend link does not substitute for launching the game or setting up its multiplayer session.
So if the host is already playing and has a session URL, they can send it through browser chat or another messaging service without bringing the desktop client window to the foreground just to deliver the link. If no host has started the session or generated its invite, opening browser chat alone will not create it.
How do you create a Remote Play Together invitation?
The host needs to start a supported game through Steam. Steam’s documented flow uses the in-game overlay to invite a friend; Valve also describes sharing a session link from the Friends list while a supported game is running.

- Check that the game supports Remote Play Together. Look for the feature on the game’s Steam store page. Support is specific to the game; do not assume that every multiplayer title uses Remote Play Together.
- Have the host launch the game on the host PC through Steam. For this feature, a browser is not a replacement for the running host game.
- Open the Steam overlay. While in the game, press
Shift+Tab. - Choose a friend and select Remote Play Together. The host starts the invitation from the overlay; the game and host computer provide the session.
- Alternatively, share a session link if that option is available. Valve says the host can take the invite URL from the Friends list during a supported running game and send it through another channel. The recipient can then use the link to join.
The game owner is the host: Valve’s guidance says the host needs to own and install the game, while a participant joining through a Remote Play Together link does not need to own it. This is a feature-specific arrangement, not a general rule for ordinary online multiplayer, where the game may require each player to have a copy or meet other conditions set by its developer. (Steam Remote Play Together help; Valve’s Remote Play Together announcement)
Can you send or receive a Steam game invite on a phone?
A phone can receive a Remote Play Together invitation through the Steam Chat mobile app. Valve describes accepting the host’s invitation in Steam Chat, after which the stream opens in Steam Link.
That is a documented recipient flow, not proof that Steam Chat or the Steam Mobile app can originate every kind of game invitation without an active host. If you are the host, start the supported game through Steam on the host computer and use its documented invitation flow. If you are the recipient, use the host’s invitation in Steam Chat and follow the prompt into Steam Link.
Valve’s Remote Play Together announcement describes joining a session without a Steam account through Steam or Steam Link. Keep that claim within this feature: it does not establish that a person can join every standard Steam multiplayer lobby without an account, game copy, or whatever the individual game requires. What if you mean an online lobby rather than Remote Play Together?
Use the game’s own multiplayer or lobby interface. Steamworks documents separate invitation functions for a current game session and for an existing lobby, so the exact controls depend on how the game implements multiplayer.
For a conventional online game, open the game and look for its lobby, party, or invite controls. If the title offers an invite through Steam’s overlay, follow that game’s flow; if it uses an in-game lobby code or another method, follow the game’s instructions instead. The evidence for Remote Play Together does not establish that a standard online lobby can be created or invited into from browser chat.
This is also why a missing or different invite control does not necessarily mean Steam browser chat is malfunctioning. The game may use a different multiplayer system, and the Steamworks API distinguishes lobby invitations from invitations to a current game session. Consult the title’s own support guidance for its exact requirements. (Steamworks: ISteamFriends; Steamworks: Remote Play)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should you check if the invitation option is missing?
First identify the kind of session you are trying to create. For Remote Play Together, check the feature support on the game’s store page, confirm the host has launched the game through Steam, and use the documented in-game overlay flow. For a regular online lobby, check that game’s own multiplayer instructions rather than expecting a universal Steam browser control.

- You only see a friend-add link: that link is for adding a friend, not joining gameplay. Ask the host for the game-session invitation if one has been created.
- You are trying to start the session from browser chat: browser chat can deliver a message or existing link, but the Remote Play Together host flow starts with a supported running game.
- You cannot find Remote Play Together in the game: verify the feature is listed for that title and that you are using the host-side flow in the running game’s Steam overlay.
- The game uses a conventional online lobby: follow its own invite controls and requirements; Remote Play Together instructions do not apply automatically.
- The recipient is on a phone: the documented route is to accept the host’s invitation in Steam Chat and open the stream in Steam Link.
Steam’s interface and app capabilities can change. The official support and live feature pages cited here were checked on October 30, 2026; the exact controls of every game or third-party lobby system are not established by those pages.
How many people can join, and what does the recipient need?
Valve’s March 2021 explanation describes Remote Play Together as allowing up to four players, with potentially more when connections are fast. That is a feature description, not a measured result or a Steam-wide limit for every multiplayer game; use the game’s own information for its session rules.
For Remote Play Together, only the host needs to own and install the game, according to Valve’s feature guidance. On a computer, Valve says a USB controller can be handy for a joining player, while keyboard and mouse sharing is also supported. A wired network is Valve’s recommendation for streaming quality; neither a controller nor an Ethernet cable creates or sends the invite. (Valve’s Remote Play Together announcement; Steam Remote Play)

Which method should you use?
- You only need to contact a friend: sign in to Steam Friends & Chat in a browser and send a message.
- A host already has a Remote Play Together link: forward or paste that link in browser chat or another messaging channel.
- You want to host Remote Play Together: launch a supported game through Steam on the host PC, then invite through the overlay or share the session link if available.
- You want to join from a phone: accept the host’s invitation in Steam Chat and continue in Steam Link.
- You want to invite someone into a normal online match: use the game’s own lobby or multiplayer invitation flow.
In short, browser chat can carry an invitation, but it does not replace the host and running game needed to create a Remote Play Together session. “Without opening the desktop client” is possible for forwarding an already-created link; “without a host running Steam and the game” is not the documented Remote Play Together workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the recipient need to own the game to join Remote Play Together?
No. Valve says the host must own and install the game, while a participant joining through a Remote Play Together link does not need to own it. That exception applies to this feature, not automatically to a game’s regular online multiplayer.
Can someone join Remote Play Together without a Steam account?
Valve says a person can join through Steam or Steam Link without a Steam account. This statement is specific to Remote Play Together and should not be generalized to other Steam games or lobby systems.
Can Remote Play Together have more than four players?
Valve’s March 2021 announcement says up to four players, potentially more with fast connections. The statement is conditional feature guidance, not a guarantee for every game or network.
Do you need a controller to join a Remote Play Together game on a computer?
Valve describes a USB controller as handy for a computer participant, but also supports keyboard and mouse sharing. The game’s own control scheme can affect what is practical for a particular player.
