Yes, it is possible—but clicking a phishing link does not by itself prove that your device or account has been hacked. The danger depends on what happened next: a fake page may steal information you enter, and a link may lead to a harmful download. If you only opened the page, close it and avoid interacting further; take stronger steps if you shared information or downloaded a file.

What can happen when you click a phishing link?

Opening a web page and submitting information to it are different events. A phishing page may imitate a bank, email provider, or other service and ask you to enter a password, payment details, or personal information. Scammers can use information submitted there to access accounts or attempt identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains these risks in its phishing guidance.

A link can also lead to a harmful download. That creates a different concern: malware may affect the device or expose information stored or entered on it. The FTC’s malware guidance describes steps to take if you suspect a download or infection.

There is no reliable probability in the reviewed official guidance for whether a device will be compromised just from opening a phishing link. A click is not proof of a hack, but it is not a reason to assume every link is harmless, either.

I clicked a phishing link—what should I do?

Match your response to what you did. These steps reduce risk; they cannot, by themselves, prove that a device is clean.

If you opened the page but entered nothing and downloaded nothing

  1. Close the page and do not click buttons, download files, or enter information there.
  2. Keep your device and browser updated.
  3. If you later notice a download or suspicious device behavior, follow the malware steps below.

The click alone does not establish that your device was hacked. However, the FTC notes that malware may go undetected temporarily, so having no obvious symptoms is not conclusive.

If you entered a password

  1. Using a trusted device or clean session, change the exposed password and any other account password where you reused it.
  2. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the affected account and other important accounts where available.
  3. Contact the service through its official website or a phone number you already know is genuine. If it was a work or school account, notify your IT team.

The FTC says, “Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.” It lists a security key as one possible MFA factor; a key helps protect sign-ins but does not check or clean a device.

If you entered bank or payment details

  1. Contact your bank or card issuer using a known-good phone number or website.
  2. Watch for unauthorized activity and follow the institution’s instructions.
  3. If you exposed personal identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov for tailored recovery steps.

If a file downloaded or you suspect malware

  1. Stop signing in to accounts on the possibly affected device.
  2. Update its security software and run a scan. Follow the tool’s findings.
  3. From a trusted device or clean session, change passwords and enable two-factor authentication in case malware exposed account access.
  4. If you need help, contact the device manufacturer or a trusted support provider.

The FTC recommends updated security software and a scan when malware may have downloaded; its guidance does not say that a paid product is required.

How to verify and report the message

If the message claimed to come from a company or person, verify it using a website or phone number you already trust—not the link or contact details in the suspicious message. Report the message through your email or text provider, then delete it.

  • The FTC advises forwarding phishing email to reportphishing@apwg.org.
  • Forward phishing text messages to SPAM (7726).
  • Report the scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • For Outlook or Teams, Microsoft documents reporting options in its phishing guidance.

What signs should you watch for?

Unexpected downloads, account security alerts, changed settings, or unusual device behavior are reasons to investigate and take the relevant steps above. They do not, on their own, identify exactly what happened. Likewise, the absence of visible problems cannot rule out malware.
