North Dakota State University Extension says crackers and chips stay crisp when they are packaged tightly and frozen. To help preserve that texture, use moisture-resistant freezer packaging, protect fragile crackers from crushing, and let the sealed package warm to room temperature before opening it.
How to freeze crackers
- Start with fresh crackers. Freezing preserves their condition; it cannot improve crackers that are already stale or soft. NDSU Extension notes that food quality after freezing depends partly on its condition when frozen.
- Seal them against moisture and odors. Close the original inner package if it is intact, then place it in a tightly sealed freezer bag or freezer-safe airtight container. NDSU recommends packaging that resists moisture or vapor, protects against odors, and seals well. Press excess air from a freezer bag before sealing.
- Prevent crushing. For delicate crackers, use a rigid freezer-safe container, or put the sealed packet in a protective outer container. This is practical handling advice; the cited sources do not compare packaging types in a cracker-specific test.
- Freeze in portions. Divide a large supply into amounts you expect to use at one time. Smaller portions reduce the need to open and reseal the full supply.
Ordinary paper cartons do not provide sufficient moisture and vapor resistance for long-term freezer storage, according to NDSU. Keep crackers in suitable freezer packaging rather than relying on the carton alone.
How to thaw crackers without adding moisture
Take out only the portion you plan to use and leave it sealed while it warms to room temperature. Opening a cold package in humid room air gives moisture an opportunity to reach the crackers. Keeping it closed during warming is a sensible moisture-control step based on the sources’ packaging advice, not a cracker-specific thawing protocol tested by them. They do not establish an exact warming time.
Once the package has warmed, open it and serve the crackers. If they feel soft, the cited sources do not establish a reliable rescue method, and reheating is not guaranteed to restore every cracker’s texture.

Choose packaging for the crackers and the way you use them

These are practical packaging considerations, not results of a head-to-head cracker storage test. NDSU’s central advice is to package crackers tightly; Blue Diamond Growers likewise advises keeping opened Nut-Thins packages closed to protect them from moisture and odor absorption. That manufacturer guidance applies to Nut-Thins, not to every cracker.
How long can crackers stay frozen?
The cited sources do not give a cracker-specific freezer storage duration, so there is no supported fixed time limit to apply to all crackers. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says to keep the freezer at 0°F or below to retain food quality; it also explains that freezing protects food safety but does not prevent quality from declining indefinitely.
