Yes—if Google shows the option for your account, you can change its Gmail address and keep the same Google Account. Your old address remains linked, and mail sent to either address reaches the same inbox. But Google has not described this feature as a way to fight spam, and the setting is not available to every user.

What changes—and what stays the same

Google lets eligible users replace the Gmail address used as their Google Account email with a new available address ending in @gmail.com. This changes the address associated with the existing account; it does not create a new account.

  • Your account and saved data stay: Google says changing the address does not affect saved account data.
  • Your old address remains linked: It becomes an alternate address. Messages sent to either address arrive in the same Gmail inbox, and you can sign in with either one.
  • The old address is not released: It cannot be deleted or reused by someone else. The inbox’s “to” field shows which address a message was sent to.

Google’s Help Center describes these effects and notes that you may be able to change your Google Account email depending on your account: Change your Google Account email.

Who can change a Gmail address, and where?

Google announced on March 31, 2026, that the ability to change a username was available to all Google Account users in the United States. That announcement does not establish worldwide availability. Google’s Help Center still says the option may not appear for some accounts, so check your own settings rather than assuming you are eligible. Google has not provided a firm country-by-country schedule in the cited materials.

To check, open Google Account email settings, then follow this path:

  1. Open Personal info.
  2. Select Email, then Google Account email.
  3. Look for Change Google Account email. If it is absent, Google says you may not be able to change the address for that account at that time.
  4. If the option is available, choose an available username and follow the on-screen confirmation steps.

Google will not accept a username that is already in use, was previously used and deleted, or is reserved to prevent spam or abuse. See Google’s eligibility and address-change instructions for current details.

Limits to know before you change it

Google says you can create a new Gmail address for the account once every 12 months, up to three times total. You can switch back to your previous address, but the new address cannot be deleted. The previous address remains attached as an alternate.

Because the address change can affect how some services recognize you, Google recommends backing up your data first as a precaution. It also flags possible issues with Chromebook use, Sign in with Google on non-Google sites, and Chrome Remote Desktop; some app settings may reset. Google’s Help Center guidance lists these considerations.

Will other apps still recognize your account?

Not necessarily. Google’s developer guidance says the Google subject ID, or sub, stays stable when a user changes an email address. A service that uses that ID as its primary account key should be better positioned to keep the account linked. A service that identifies users only by email may encounter disruption.

Google warns that, in some cases, an app that maps accounts by email could create a duplicate account if the user’s OAuth grant has been revoked and a later sign-in provides the new address. Google recommends that developers use the stable subject ID as the primary identifier; that is guidance for app makers, not a guarantee that every third-party service will update your profile automatically. See Google’s developer guidance on username changes.

Does changing your Gmail address fight spam?

Google’s published materials do not describe changing a recipient’s Gmail address as a spam-control measure. Its announced spam protections instead target bulk senders and how they send mail.

In an October 3, 2023 announcement, Google said senders sending more than 5,000 messages to Gmail addresses in one day would have to authenticate their email, offer easy unsubscribe, and stay below a reported spam threshold. Those requirements address senders and message handling, not the addresses of Gmail recipients. Google reported that an earlier authentication requirement led to 75% fewer unauthenticated messages reaching Gmail users; that is Google’s reported historical outcome, not an independent measurement or evidence that changing an address reduces spam. Change the existing account or leave the address alone?

If you mainly want a different sign-in address while keeping the same Google account, changing an eligible account preserves its saved data and routes mail to both addresses into the same inbox. The trade-offs are the limited number of changes, username availability, and possible compatibility problems with apps or devices.

If the option is unavailable or you do not want to risk disrupting services that rely on your current email, you can keep the address you have. Creating a separate account is another choice, but the cited Google instructions do not establish that a separate account transfers existing data or solves spam problems.
