It depends on which resolution you mean. Viewers can change their playback quality, but that does not change the resolution your encoder sends to YouTube. For a broadcaster changing the outgoing resolution while already live, YouTube’s public guidance does not say definitively whether the change works seamlessly or whether an encoder restart will interrupt the session. Test your exact setup in a private or unlisted stream before relying on a mid-broadcast change.
First, distinguish encoder resolution from playback quality
The broadcaster’s outgoing resolution
This is the resolution of the video feed your encoder sends to YouTube—for example, 1080p or 720p. It is controlled by the encoder and stream configuration. YouTube says it detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default; manual resolution selection is available through a custom stream key and the Stream Resolution setting in Live Control Room.
The viewer’s playback quality
This is the quality a viewer selects in the YouTube player. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. A viewer changing playback quality does not change the resolution arriving from your encoder. The quality options a viewer sees can depend on processing and playback conditions.
Can a broadcaster change resolution without ending the live session?
YouTube’s current public encoder guidance describes how to configure or detect resolution before streaming, but it does not establish a definite rule for changing an encoder’s outgoing resolution during an active broadcast. It also does not say whether a particular encoder’s change or restart will interrupt the live session. Do not promise viewers a seamless change, and do not assume YouTube necessarily requires a restart.

If uninterrupted programming matters, treat an interruption as possible until you have tested the same encoder, stream-key settings, and workflow. The safest operational choice is to set the intended resolution before going live. If you must change it during a 24/7 run, first rehearse the change on a private or unlisted stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health warnings.
Set the outgoing resolution and encoder settings
Automatic or manual resolution
YouTube’s recommended default is automatic detection of encoder settings. If you need to select a resolution manually, YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. The stream key and stream URL connect the encoder to YouTube; the encoder supplies the video settings.

Recommended H.264 video settings
The following are YouTube-recommended incoming H.264 bitrates in the encoder settings guidance accessed in 2026. They are configuration recommendations, not evidence that a resolution change will work without interruption.

YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS encoder video, up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe frequency is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; check YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance before configuring a production stream.

Check bandwidth and consistency before making a change
- Confirm the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate match the settings you intend to send.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure the available upload bandwidth can sustain it.
- If using a backup encoder, match its resolution to the primary encoder. YouTube’s API documents a
resolutionMismatchhealth condition when primary and backup stream resolutions differ. - For a change during an active stream, test the entire workflow—including any encoder reconnect or restart—in a rehearsal. The documented backup-resolution warning does not establish how a single encoder’s mid-session change behaves.
Plan for the special risks of a 24/7 stream
A live stream is not necessarily a complete archive
YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a separate issue from resolution. If retaining a complete recording of a 24/7 program matters, make a separate local recording rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone.
Monitor the session
During operation, check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream quality and warnings. If you are testing a resolution change, watch the encoder and YouTube status together so you can tell whether a disruption came from the encoder’s output, the connection, or YouTube’s ingestion status.
