What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, but canvas does not have a built-in “take screenshot” command. In a browser, a library such as html2canvas can walk a page’s DOM, reconstruct the layout and styles it supports, paint a long element such as document.body onto a canvas, and export the pixels as PNG, JPEG, or another bitmap. That is a DOM reconstruction—not a pixel-for-pixel capture of what the browser compositor displayed—so cross-origin content, unsupported CSS, very tall pages, animations, and embedded frames need special handling.
What “full-page canvas capture” actually means
The Canvas API is a drawing surface. It stores pixels; it does not know how to capture a browser tab, preserve links, or retain the page’s DOM semantics. To capture a webpage, a DOM-rendering library reads the selected subtree’s layout and style information and draws an approximation into a canvas.
The common pattern is html2canvas(document.body). Selecting document.body asks the library to render the page root, including content below the viewport when the rendering dimensions encompass that content. Selecting a narrower element is useful when you need a report panel, invoice, article, or component rather than the entire document.
The output is a static bitmap. It cannot preserve form behavior, links, accessibility semantics, hover states, or future animation frames. Keep the original HTML when you need an editable or interactive version.

Minimal full-page example
Load html2canvas, then render the root and download the resulting PNG:
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/html2canvas@latest/dist/html2canvas.min.js"></script>
<script>
html2canvas(document.body).then(canvas => {
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.download = 'page.png';
link.href = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
link.click();
});
</script>
Run this after the page has finished laying out its content. For an application, put the call behind a button or invoke it after your data, fonts, and images have settled.
Make the capture genuinely full-page
Render the correct root
document.body is the usual starting point, but a site may place the real document inside a wrapper. Pass that wrapper instead if it contains the complete layout:
const root = document.querySelector('#app') || document.body;
const canvas = await html2canvas(root);
A fixed-height scrolling panel is different from a long document. If the content is inside an element with overflow: auto, capture that element and temporarily ensure its scrollable content is represented in the element’s dimensions, or capture it in tiles. Otherwise only the visible portion may be painted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wait for content before painting
Lazy images, client-rendered data, web fonts, and expanding sections can change the page after your call starts. Wait for the page’s own loading conditions and, where appropriate, for images:
await document.fonts.ready;
await Promise.all(
Array.from(document.images).map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, { once: true });
});
})
);
const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body);
This prevents a slow resource from shifting the layout after the renderer has measured it. It does not make an inaccessible cross-origin image readable; that is a separate browser-security issue.

Set the rendering window and dimensions
For pages whose layout responds to viewport width, pass the intended viewport dimensions. The root’s full scroll height must fit within the canvas:
const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body, {
windowWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
windowHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
width: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
height: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
x: 0,
y: 0
});
Exact option behavior can vary with the library version and page layout. Measure the result and compare it with the document’s scroll dimensions rather than assuming every site needs all four values.
Control crop, sharpness, and excluded elements
Capture one element
const card = document.querySelector('.invoice');
const canvas = await html2canvas(card);
Crop a rectangle
Use x, y, width, and height to render a specific region:
const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body, {
x: 100,
y: 200,
width: 1200,
height: 900
});
Increase pixel density
A higher scale produces a sharper bitmap at the cost of memory and time. Matching the device pixel ratio is a practical default:
const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body, {
scale: window.devicePixelRatio
});
Very high device-pixel ratios can make a long page exceed canvas limits sooner. Choose a deliberate scale for predictable file sizes.

You can also add a temporary class, hide a cookie prompt, pause an animation, or inject capture-only CSS before rendering, then remove it afterward.
Export the canvas as an image
PNG with a data URL
const dataUrl = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.download = 'full-page.png';
link.href = dataUrl;
link.click();
JPEG with quality control
const dataUrl = canvas.toDataURL('image/jpeg', 0.9);
JPEG is smaller for photographic content but introduces compression artifacts and does not preserve transparent backgrounds. PNG is usually better for text, diagrams, and interfaces.
Use a Blob for large captures
canvas.toBlob(blob => {
if (!blob) throw new Error('Canvas export failed');
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.download = 'full-page.png';
link.href = url;
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
}, 'image/png');
toBlob() avoids keeping a long base64 string in memory and is preferable for large files or uploads.
What html2canvas can and cannot reproduce
Where it works best
- Same-origin HTML, images, fonts, and styles that the renderer supports.
- Static layouts where content has finished loading.
- Element-level captures, crops, scaling, and deliberate exclusion of nodes.
Why the result can differ from the screen
html2canvas builds its own representation from DOM and CSS values. It does not capture the browser’s final painted pixels. Unsupported CSS properties, browser-only effects, plugins, complex layout behavior, and animation timing may be missing or different. Compare the generated image with the live page when visual fidelity matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCanvas itself has no interactive DOM. The exported bitmap cannot retain links, focus behavior, accessibility labels, form controls, or an animation timeline.
Cross-origin images, iframes, and canvas security
Images from another origin
An image served from another origin can taint the destination canvas. Once tainted, browser security prevents reading pixels or exporting them with toDataURL() or toBlob(). The remote server must permit the required cross-origin request, and the image must be requested accordingly; html2canvas’s useCORS option can help only when the server supplies compatible headers. A proxy is another option when you control a server that can fetch and relay the resource legally.

Same-origin iframes
A same-origin iframe can be rendered recursively because the parent page can access its contentDocument. Wait for the frame’s own content before capture.
Cross-origin and sandboxed iframes
A cross-origin frame cannot be read because the page is barred from accessing its document. A sandboxed frame without allow-same-origin has the same practical limitation. You cannot solve that restriction with a canvas option; capture the frame from an environment that has permission or obtain an export from the framed application.
Very tall pages and canvas limits
Browsers impose implementation-dependent maximum canvas dimensions and total pixel counts. A long article at a high scale can fail, produce a blank canvas, or exhaust memory even when ordinary viewport captures work.
Use a quick size check
const width = document.documentElement.scrollWidth;
const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
const scale = Math.min(window.devicePixelRatio, 2);
console.log({ width, height, scale, pixels: width * height * scale * scale });
The calculation is a warning signal, not a universal limit. Test on the browsers and devices you support.
Tile and stitch when necessary
For extreme documents, capture vertical sections with overlapping boundaries, then stitch the resulting images in a worker or server. Tiling lowers the maximum canvas size but requires care around fixed headers, sticky elements, lazy loading, and seams. If you need a browser-faithful full-page image or PDF at scale, use browser automation or a screenshot service instead of forcing one giant canvas.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Images are blank | They are cross-origin, still loading, blocked, or failed. | Wait for images, verify URLs, and configure permitted CORS or a proxy you control. |
| Iframe content is missing | The frame is cross-origin or sandboxed without same-origin access. | Capture from an authorized context or obtain the frame’s own export. |
| Only the viewport appears | The selected root or dimensions exclude scrollable content. | Render the full wrapper, set appropriate width/height, and handle nested scrolling elements. |
| Styles differ from the live page | The renderer does not support a CSS feature or the page changed during capture. | Check supported CSS, freeze animations, wait for fonts/data, or use a pixel screenshot workflow. |
| Export throws a security error | The canvas is tainted by an inaccessible resource. | Fix the resource’s CORS policy or remove/replace it before rendering. |
| Blank, clipped, or crashing output on long pages | Canvas dimension or memory limits. | Lower scale, crop, tile and stitch, or switch to browser automation. |
Canvas reconstruction versus a browser screenshot
| Concern | Canvas/html2canvas | Browser-native or automation screenshot |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel fidelity | Reconstructs supported DOM and CSS; differences are possible. | Captures the browser’s painted pixels. |
| Cross-origin reach | Restricted by CORS, tainted canvases, and frame access. | Still subject to web security, but the browser can capture what it displays. |
| Control | Element selection, crop, scale, and ignore hooks are straightforward. | Offers viewport/device and browser-level controls, usually with more setup. |
| Maximum size | Bound by canvas dimensions and memory; tall pages may need tiles. | Full-page workflows can scroll and stitch outside one canvas. |
| Execution | Runs client-side with no server renderer. | Usually requires a browser session, automation runtime, or hosted service. |
| Output | Bitmap export; original HTML remains separate. | Bitmap or PDF from the browser’s rendered page. |
Or skip the browser setup

FAQ
Does a canvas capture preserve selectable text?
No. The export is a bitmap. Keep the HTML or generate a text-aware PDF separately if selection and accessibility are requirements.
Can I capture a page without asking the server for a screenshot?
Yes. html2canvas runs in the browser, but the page still has to obey normal same-origin and canvas security rules.
Why does a capture change when I run it twice?
Asynchronous data, image loading, fonts, animations, time-dependent widgets, and responsive dimensions can differ between runs. Freeze those variables before rendering.
Is a larger scale always better?
No. It increases sharpness and pixel count together. On long pages, excessive scale can cause memory pressure or exceed canvas limits.
