Yes, but export and verify your data before cancelling either subscription. Cancelling a Claude or ChatGPT plan normally stops future billing; it is different from deleting the account. Keep the original account open until the export downloads, opens correctly and contains the conversations you need. Gemini may store imported chats in Gemini Apps activity, but Google does not document a guaranteed, complete Claude-to-Gemini migration for every account or file format.
Cancellation is not the same as account deletion
The safest migration separates three actions that are often confused: exporting data, cancelling a paid plan and deleting an account.
- Exporting creates a copy of account data for your records or for a possible import.
- Cancelling a subscription stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund charges that have already been made.
- Deleting an account is a permanent action that can remove the provider-held copy of your data.
You can therefore cancel a Claude or ChatGPT subscription after moving to Gemini without immediately losing your old history, provided you leave the account intact and retain a verified export. Do not assume that uninstalling a mobile app cancels billing or that a successful Gemini upload reproduces every feature of the original service.

Export ChatGPT before you cancel
Use the web export control
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls, then choose Export.
- Complete the confirmation steps and wait for the export email.
OpenAI says the resulting ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data. An export can take up to seven days to arrive. When the download email is issued, its link expires after 24 hours, so download the file promptly. OpenAI specifically advises checking that the ZIP contains the conversations you need before making irreversible account changes.

Use the Privacy Portal if you cannot use the normal settings path
OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal route for requesting an export. Whichever route you use, save the original ZIP rather than relying only on a browser preview or a copied selection of messages.
Verify the archive
- Confirm that the ZIP opens without an extraction error.
- Look for the conversation-history files and open several older and newer conversations.
- Check that the account or date range matches the ChatGPT account you intend to leave.
- Copy the archive to a second protected location before cancelling billing.
An encrypted USB flash drive is a practical offline destination. Chat histories and account files may contain personal, business or confidential information, so protect the drive with encryption and keep it somewhere separate from your computer.
Export Claude while the account is still active
Web and Desktop steps
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Choose Export data and submit the request.
Anthropic says exports include your conversation data and the user data for your account. The emailed download link expires after 24 hours, so save the file as soon as it arrives. Claude’s official export is available to active Free, Pro and Max users.

The Claude mobile apps cannot start an export. If you normally use Claude on a phone or tablet, sign in through the web interface or Claude Desktop to request the archive before cancelling.

What the Claude export does not promise
Anthropic states that exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. That restriction does not itself prevent you from keeping a backup or attempting a supported upload elsewhere, but it means an export should be treated as an archive rather than a guaranteed one-click restoration package. Anthropic’s export documentation also does not promise that you can retrieve the data after closing the account, which is another reason to finish the download and verification first.

Move material into Gemini carefully
Do not assume a complete provider-to-provider import
Google’s published Gemini privacy information confirms that imported chats are stored in Gemini Apps activity. It does not document universal direct import of a Claude export, nor does it guarantee perfect reconstruction of ChatGPT or Claude memories, custom instructions, uploaded files, projects, tool connections or conversation metadata.
Use only an import or upload option that is actually offered in your Gemini account. If Gemini accepts a particular ZIP, document or text format, test it with a small, non-sensitive sample first. A successful upload proves that those files were accepted; it does not prove that every thread, attachment, system instruction or relationship between files was recreated.
Keep a provider-neutral archive
Retain the untouched ChatGPT and Claude ZIP files even after Gemini shows imported conversations. Also keep a readable copy of especially important material, such as project decisions, code explanations, legal or financial notes and research logs. A plain-text or document copy is useful when a destination service can display text but cannot interpret the original export’s metadata.

Understand Gemini’s deletion controls
Google says you can delete individual imported chats or bulk-delete all imported chats associated with the .zip file used to import them into Gemini Apps. That gives you a way to remove a test import without deleting unrelated Gemini activity. Google Takeout can export Gemini information for a later backup.
Gemini activity auto-delete settings offer choices of 3, 18 or 36 months, or indefinite retention. Select the setting that matches your retention needs rather than assuming imported material will remain forever. Google also says data reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years after the related activity is deleted. Avoid uploading secrets that you would not want handled under those retention conditions.
Cancel the subscription through the service that billed you
ChatGPT subscriptions bought on the web
Use the subscription or billing controls in the ChatGPT account that was charged. OpenAI’s wording is explicit: cancelling stops future renewals and does not automatically refund previous charges. Save the cancellation confirmation and note the date on which paid access ends.
ChatGPT subscriptions bought through Apple
An Apple App Store subscription must be cancelled through Apple’s subscription settings. Deleting the ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple subscription, so handle Apple billing separately.

ChatGPT subscriptions bought through Google Play
A Google Play subscription must be cancelled in Google Play’s subscription management. Removing the ChatGPT app from an Android device does not stop the renewal.
Claude billing
Cancel Claude through the platform that processed the charge, following that platform’s subscription controls. Before confirming, check that the account shown is the one whose export you verified. Keep the receipt or confirmation email.
In every case, cancellation changes billing status; it is not a request to erase your account. You can normally keep the account and its history available under the provider’s applicable retention rules after paid access ends.

ChatGPT account deletion
OpenAI says account deletion is permanent. It deletes account data within 30 days, except for limited data that may be retained longer where required or permitted by law. Once deletion is requested, you should not expect to recover a missing conversation by asking support later. Verify both the export and your backup locations before using the deletion control.

Claude account closure
Claude’s export guidance does not promise continued export access after account closure. Treat closure as an irreversible point for practical purposes: finish the export, open it, make a second protected copy and only then consider deleting the account.
A safe migration procedure
- Inventory what matters. List the conversations, files, projects, custom instructions and account settings you may need. Mark items that contain confidential or regulated information.
- Request both exports. Start ChatGPT’s export early because it can take up to seven days. Request Claude’s export from the web or Desktop, not a mobile app.
- Download before the links expire. ChatGPT and Claude download links are available for 24 hours after delivery.
- Open and inspect the files. Test extraction, search for several known conversation titles or phrases and make sure the archive is not empty or from the wrong account.
- Create two protected copies. Keep one encrypted local copy and another in a separate secure location. Do not upload the only copy to Gemini.
- Test Gemini with a small sample. Use only the import or upload formats Gemini presents for your account. Compare a few source conversations with what Gemini displays.
- Record what did not transfer. Note missing attachments, dates, instructions, memory behavior, project structure or tool connections so you do not mistake an incomplete import for a full migration.
- Cancel billing. Use the web, Apple or Google Play path that actually charged the subscription, and retain confirmation.
- Keep the old accounts open for a while. Do not request deletion until you have tested your new workflow and can open the backups independently.
Common failure cases and fixes
The export email has not arrived
ChatGPT exports can take up to seven days. Check the account’s email address, spam folder and whether the request was made for the correct account. Claude’s message can also be missed if you use a different address for billing and sign-in. Do not delete the account while waiting.
The download link expired
Both providers limit export links to 24 hours. Request a new export rather than relying on a forwarded or partially downloaded link. After downloading, verify the archive immediately.
Gemini accepts the file but conversations look incomplete
That result is consistent with the lack of a documented, universal migration format. Preserve the original ZIP, upload a smaller supported file or manually provide the specific conversation text you need. Keep attachments and metadata in your archive even if Gemini cannot display them.
A subscription renewed after the app was removed
Uninstalling an app does not cancel billing. Check the original payment channel—ChatGPT web, Apple or Google Play—and cancel there. If a charge has already posted, remember that cancellation stops future renewals but does not automatically refund past charges.
You are tempted to delete everything immediately
Deletion is unnecessary for stopping payment. Cancel the plan, retain the account and keep the verified exports until Gemini meets your needs. Delete only after you have decided that the retained archive and any legal or organizational retention requirements are satisfied.
Privacy checks before uploading old conversations
- Remove passwords, API keys, payment details, private health information and other secrets from any file you do not need Gemini to process.
- Check whether conversations include information about other people who did not consent to a new service.
- Use Gemini’s activity and auto-delete controls deliberately; imported chats are part of Gemini Apps activity.
- Keep a local encrypted archive even if you choose indefinite Gemini retention.
- Document which provider still holds the original account and which copy is the authoritative record.

Cancel Claude or ChatGPT only after you have three things: a downloaded export, a successful inspection of the conversations that matter and a second protected copy. Use Gemini as a new destination rather than assuming it is a perfect clone of either service. Keep the original accounts until your files, billing status and privacy choices are all confirmed; delete an account only when you consciously accept permanent loss of the provider-held copy.
