Yes. Canceling ChatGPT Pro stops the next renewal; it does not immediately delete your account, saved chats, or custom GPTs. Paid features remain available through the end of your current billing period. OpenAI says you can continue using GPTs you created after changing or canceling a subscription, though editing them still depends on your subscription eligibility and permissions.
What happens to Pro access when you cancel?
Cancellation turns off future renewals rather than ending paid access immediately. OpenAI says paid features remain available until the current billing period ends. To avoid another charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date and check the billing platform to confirm the cancellation and next billing date. OpenAI’s cancellation instructions cover the current process.

Will your chat history stay in your account?
Regular and archived chats remain saved to your account until you delete them manually, subject to any retention policy that applies to a managed workspace. Canceling Pro by itself does not delete saved chats. OpenAI’s retention guidance explains chat deletion and workspace exceptions.
If you delete a saved chat, it disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions for data that has already been de-identified or that must be retained for legal or security reasons. Deleted chats cannot be restored.

Workspace accounts may follow different retention rules
If you use ChatGPT through an employer or school workspace, the organization’s retention policy may apply. Personal subscription guidance does not establish the rules for a particular workspace, so check with its administrator.
Data controls are separate from cancellation
Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” is a separate data-control choice: it does not delete or hide saved chats. You can review the setting in ChatGPT’s data controls; OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ describes it.

Can you still use custom GPTs you created?
Yes. OpenAI’s GPTs in ChatGPT FAQ says, “You can continue using GPTs you previously created.” Continued use is distinct from editing: editing an existing GPT depends on having an eligible subscription and the necessary account or workspace permissions. Do not assume that every building or editing feature remains available after moving to a lower plan.
Cancel through the platform that bills you
Check your receipt or billing settings first so you know which platform manages the subscription. Use the account that made the purchase to cancel:

- ChatGPT on the web: Sign in to ChatGPT, open account settings, then use billing or plan management to cancel.
- Apple App Store: Open the Apple account’s Subscriptions settings and cancel the ChatGPT subscription there.
- Google Play: Open Play Store subscriptions under the Google account used to purchase the subscription and cancel there.
Use the relevant platform’s cancellation status and billing date to verify that the change took effect. Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel a subscription billed through an app store. OpenAI’s cancellation instructions provide channel-specific details.

If your goal is only to stop paying while keeping your account, cancel the subscription and leave the account intact. Account deletion is permanent and removes access to OpenAI services; it is not required to stop a subscription. See OpenAI’s account-deletion guidance before choosing that separate action.

Canceling a subscription also does not automatically refund previous charges. Refund requests follow separate instructions and depend on the purchase channel and location, as explained in OpenAI’s cancellation and billing guidance.
