Yes—but only when your broker supports fractional orders for the specific Berkshire ticker. Berkshire Hathaway has two listed classes: BRK.A and BRK.B. Berkshire states that each Class B share represents 1/1,500 of the per-share amounts shown for Class A. That stock-class relationship is separate from fractional trading: BRK.B is not a broker-created slice of BRK.A, and a broker may or may not let you buy a fraction of either ticker.
What “fractional Berkshire” can mean
There are two different concepts that are often confused:
- BRK.B’s relationship to BRK.A: Berkshire created Class B as a separate listed class whose per-share amounts are 1/1,500 of Class A amounts.
- A fractional position: Your broker records less than one whole share of whichever class you buy, such as 0.25 BRK.B.
Therefore, buying one BRK.B share is not the same operationally as buying 1/1,500 of a BRK.A share through a broker. BRK.B is its own security with its own ticker, market price, trading activity and eligibility rules. A fractional BRK.B order is a further fraction of that Class B share. A fractional BRK.A order, if available, is a separate broker decision.

In Berkshire Hathaway’s August 8, 2026 second-quarter earnings release, the company said: “Per share amounts for Class B shares are 1/1,500th of those shown for Class A shares.” The statement describes the economic relationship between the classes; it does not require brokers to offer fractional orders in either ticker.

Can you buy fractional BRK.A?
Possibly, but there is no universal answer. Fractional trading is a feature controlled by each broker, and eligibility can vary by ticker even when a broker supports fractional trading generally. The broker’s current order ticket is the practical authority.
Search for BRK.A in the broker app or website, select a buy order, and look for a choice to enter a dollar amount or a fractional share quantity. If the interface permits only whole shares, or marks the security as ineligible, you cannot place a fractional BRK.A order there. Do not infer BRK.A support from a broker’s general fractional-share advertising.
Can you buy fractional BRK.B?
BRK.B is usually the more practical route for a small-dollar Berkshire purchase because its per-share amount is 1/1,500 of Class A’s. However, the same operational rule applies: the broker must enable fractional trading for the BRK.B ticker. A lower share price alone does not guarantee fractional eligibility.

Before submitting an order, verify all of the following in the live trade ticket:
- The ticker is the intended class, BRK.A or BRK.B.
- The order can be entered in dollars or in a decimal share quantity.
- The displayed minimum order meets your planned amount.
- The available order types and estimated execution terms are shown for that ticker.
How broker fractional orders work
With a dollar-based order, you specify an amount such as $10. The broker converts that amount into an equivalent fraction of the current market price. With a share-based order, you enter a quantity such as 0.05 shares. The resulting quantity changes with the execution price, and the final dollar value can differ from your estimate.

Fractional orders are generally held on the broker’s books rather than represented by a paper certificate in your name. The broker’s rules determine how the order is routed, which order types are permitted, how corporate actions are handled and whether the position can leave the platform.

- Choose the class. Search for BRK.A or BRK.B and confirm the company name and share class displayed by the broker.
- Open a buy ticket. Look for “dollars,” “amount,” “fractional shares” or a decimal quantity field. If the ticket accepts only whole shares, fractional trading is unavailable for that ticker in that account.
- Check the minimum. Robinhood documents a $1 minimum for fractional buy or sell orders. Other brokers’ minimums must be confirmed in their current interfaces and terms.
- Review order types. Some brokers restrict fractional orders to particular instructions. Fidelity warns that order types are limited; Interactive Brokers documents market and limit orders for fractional trading. The available choices shown for your ticker control what you can submit.
- Read the preview. Confirm estimated shares, estimated value, price treatment, commissions or other charges, and any warning that the security is unsupported or illiquid.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Keep the executed quantity and price for your records. A dollar order may fill as a small decimal share, and the final quantity is based on the execution price.
What does it cost to buy fractional Berkshire?
There is no single universal cost. Your total economic cost can include the share price, the bid-ask spread, a commission or transaction charge under your broker’s pricing plan, and the effect of how the broker executes a fractional order.
Minimum investment
The smallest practical order is broker-specific. Robinhood explicitly requires at least $1 for a fractional buy or sell order in an eligible NMS-listed security. The materials summarized here do not establish a universal minimum for Fidelity or Interactive Brokers, so check the amount field and preview for the exact ticker and account type.
Commissions and plan pricing
Interactive Brokers documents commission-free U.S. stock trading under IBKR Lite and fixed or tiered pricing under IBKR Pro. Those are plan-level descriptions, not a promise that every order has zero cost. Select the plan you actually use and read the current schedule displayed by the broker.

For Fidelity and Robinhood, do not assume that a general “commission-free” message answers every cost question for a fractional Berkshire order. The trade preview and current fee disclosures are the appropriate places to verify charges.

Spread and execution
A fractional order still executes against market liquidity. The difference between the available buy and sell prices—the bid-ask spread—can exceed any stated commission, particularly when the order is small or the market is moving. A market order prioritizes execution over price certainty; a limit order sets a price condition but may not fill. Which choices are available depends on the broker and ticker.
Order types and execution limitations
Fractional trading can have fewer controls than whole-share trading. Fidelity labels fractional orders “Not Held,” warns that some fractional positions may be illiquid and limits order types. Interactive Brokers documents both market and limit orders, but also notes that eligibility restrictions can apply. Robinhood identifies unsupported securities at order entry.
Read the preview rather than assuming that a whole-share order workflow applies unchanged. If you need a particular order instruction and it is missing, you may have to use a whole-share order, choose the other Berkshire class if eligible, or use a different broker.
Dividends, voting and corporate actions
Fractional ownership can affect participation in shareholder matters. Fidelity says proxy voting and most voluntary corporate actions generally do not apply to the fractional portion of a position. That means owning 0.4 shares does not necessarily give you the same voting or election rights as owning a whole share.

Corporate-action treatment varies by broker and event. Before relying on a fractional position for voting, an exchange offer or another voluntary election, read the broker’s event notice and eligibility terms. Do not assume that the 1/1,500 relationship between Berkshire’s classes changes these operational rules.
What happens if you transfer the account?
Transferability is one of the biggest practical limitations.
- Fidelity: says fractional positions cannot be transferred and that certificates are not available for them.
- Robinhood: says fractional shares are illiquid outside its platform and are not transferable as shares. In a full account transfer, the fractional position is sold and the proceeds are transferred as cash.
- Interactive Brokers: warns that fractional positions can be restricted by eligibility and transferability. Confirm the receiving broker’s policy before initiating a move.
If you may change brokers, ask both firms how they handle the fractional remainder. A transfer can leave you with a cash payment instead of the same decimal share, and the sale may create a taxable transaction under your jurisdiction’s rules.

When BRK.B is the practical choice
BRK.B is generally the small-dollar starting point because Berkshire sets its per-share amounts at 1/1,500 of Class A amounts. It is also the class most likely to fit a modest dollar budget, subject to the broker’s fractional eligibility and minimum.

BRK.A has its own ticker and eligibility status. Even if your broker supports fractional BRK.B, that does not establish support for BRK.A. Search BRK.A separately and confirm that the ticket accepts a dollar or decimal-share order.

Do not treat BRK.B as a synthetic fraction
The 1/1,500 relationship is set by Berkshire’s share classes. It does not mean your broker converts BRK.B into BRK.A, and it does not make a BRK.B order transferable as a fraction of a Class A share. Your statement should show the class you actually purchased.
Which broker lets you buy Berkshire with $1 or $10?
Among the policies described here, Robinhood is the only broker with an explicitly documented $1 minimum for eligible fractional orders. A $10 order may be possible at Robinhood, Fidelity or Interactive Brokers if the selected Berkshire ticker is eligible and the account’s order ticket accepts that amount, but the available data does not establish a universal minimum for the latter two.
For any broker, enter the exact dollar amount and ticker before funding the trade. The interface should show whether the order is accepted, the resulting estimated fraction and the applicable costs.
Common failure modes and fixes
The ticket accepts only whole shares
This means fractional trading is not enabled for that ticker, account or order type. Recheck the ticker, look for a separate dollar-order mode and consult the broker’s current eligibility list. Do not submit a whole-share order accidentally.
The order is below the minimum
Increase the dollar amount to the broker’s stated minimum. For Robinhood, the documented floor is $1 per fractional buy or sell order.
The broker warns that the position is illiquid
Understand that selling may be limited to the same platform or may require a broker-specific process. Fidelity and Robinhood both describe liquidity or transfer constraints for fractional positions. If portability matters, consider whether a whole-share position better suits your account.
You are moving to another broker
Ask for a written explanation of how the fractional remainder will be handled before starting the transfer. Plan for a cash sale where the broker’s policy requires it, and retain the transaction record.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether you want BRK.A or BRK.B; do not rely on the company name alone.
- Confirm fractional eligibility for that exact ticker in the live trade ticket.
- Verify the minimum dollar amount and whether the order is entered in dollars or shares.
- Compare the available order types, spread and displayed fees.
- Read the broker’s rules for dividends, voting and voluntary corporate actions.
- Check whether a future account transfer would convert the fraction to cash.
- Save the confirmation showing the executed decimal quantity and price.
Bottom line
You can buy fractional Berkshire Hathaway shares when your broker supports fractional orders for the specific BRK.A or BRK.B ticker. BRK.B is usually the more accessible small-dollar route because Berkshire defines its per-share amounts as 1/1,500 of Class A amounts, but that relationship does not guarantee fractional trading. Check the current order ticket for eligibility, minimums, order types and costs, and understand that fractional positions may have restricted voting rights, liquidity and transferability.
