You cannot fix these symptoms on Xbox Series X because there is no supported user-installed emulator path for the PS4 version of God of War III Remastered. Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility is a curated service for selected Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games, not a general PlayStation 4 emulation layer. If you are seeing stutter, crackling audio, or crashes in RPCS3, you are troubleshooting the original PlayStation 3 release on a PC—not the PS4 remaster on an Xbox console.
The direct answer
There are two separate problems commonly described with the same words:
- An Xbox Series X problem: the console has no supported way for a user to install an emulator that runs the PS4 remaster. Changing storage, display, headset, or performance settings cannot create that missing software layer.
- An RPCS3 problem: RPCS3 is a PC emulator for PlayStation 3 software. Its documented God of War III issue concerns the PS3 original, identified in the report as game ID
BCES00510, not the PS4 remaster.
Keep those targets separate before changing any setting. A workaround observed with the PS3 original cannot be presented as a fix for God of War III Remastered on Xbox Series X.
Identify the exact game and platform first
The word “Remastered” is not a compatibility label. It describes a different release from the PS3 game emulated by RPCS3. Use the table below to classify what you have before diagnosing performance.

| What you are trying to run | Original platform | How it is normally played | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| God of War III Remastered | PlayStation 4 | PS4 hardware or a platform with an explicitly supported PS4 release | No supported user-installed PS4-emulation route on Xbox Series X |
| God of War III | PlayStation 3 | PS3 hardware or a PC running RPCS3, subject to the emulator’s game-ID entry | RPCS3 issue reports and compatibility information apply here |
| Xbox backward-compatible software | Selected original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles | Microsoft’s curated Xbox Series X|S backward-compatibility service | Not a general PS4 emulator; features vary by game |
In RPCS3, open the game’s compatibility entry and verify the title, game ID, and release media. Do not infer the edition from a folder name, a cover image, or the presence of the word “Remastered.” Compatibility status is tied to the exact game ID and media entry.
Why Xbox settings cannot repair this particular failure
Xbox Series X backward compatibility works from a selected catalog maintained by Microsoft. It does not expose a user-facing PlayStation 4 virtual machine, a way to install RPCS3, or a switch that converts PS4 code into Xbox code. Consequently, the usual troubleshooting actions—moving a game to an external SSD, changing a television’s refresh mode, replacing a headset, or adding an Xbox accessory—do not address the platform boundary.
If your goal is specifically the PS4 remaster, use hardware or software that supports that release. If your goal is to investigate the stutter report associated with RPCS3, perform the tests on the PC installation of the PS3 original described below.
How to troubleshoot the PS3 original in RPCS3
The following sequence is for a PC running RPCS3 and God of War III for PlayStation 3. It is a diagnostic procedure, not a promise of a stable frame rate or perfect audio.
1. Verify the game ID and edition
- Open RPCS3’s compatibility view for the installed game.
- Record the displayed game ID, title, and release media.
- Confirm that the entry is the PS3 original rather than a PS4 remaster package. The documented stutter report names
BCES00510; a different ID is a different test target.
Stop here if your installation is the PS4 remaster. RPCS3 does not turn that PS4 binary into the PS3 release, and a PS3 compatibility entry cannot validate an Xbox Series X setup.

2. Establish a clean baseline on a current official build
- Use a current official RPCS3 build rather than assuming an older build is representative.
- Write down the exact RPCS3 build number, renderer, CPU, and GPU.
- Record whether the RPCS3 window is focused while the symptom occurs.
- Reproduce the same scene or action several times before changing a setting.
Build number and focus state matter because the issue report describes a regression beginning with build 0.0.28-15404 and a difference between a focused and unfocused window. A baseline lets you tell a real change from a one-off hitch.
3. Test window focus as a diagnostic variable
The reporter said the heavy stutter disappeared when the RPCS3 window was unfocused. Treat that observation as a clue, not a permanent solution: an unfocused emulator may behave differently because the operating system schedules it differently, and it is not evidence that the game is fixed during normal play.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Run the same scene with RPCS3 focused.
- Repeat it with the window unfocused, without changing any other option.
- Record frame pacing and audio separately; a smoother image does not prove that audio timing is corrected.
4. Try the documented SPURS experiments one at a time
Comments on the issue report say that setting SPURS to 2 or 3 helped on a weak six-core CPU. These values are experimental workarounds with uncertain scope, not recommended universal settings.
- Return to the baseline configuration.
- Change only the SPURS value to
2. - Replay the same test and record stutter, audio behavior, and CPU load.
- Restore the baseline, then repeat with SPURS set to
3. - Keep the value only if it improves the measured symptom without introducing a crash or a new timing problem.
Changing several options together hides which setting mattered. Do not describe an improvement on one processor as a guaranteed fix for other CPUs.
5. Test process priority separately
The same report mentions a process-priority change helping on a weak six-core CPU. Use your operating system’s process manager to test priority as a separate experiment, after recording the default result. Apply the change only to the RPCS3 process, monitor system stability, and restore the default if it causes crashes, input lag, or affects other applications.

Priority changes cannot compensate for an unsupported Xbox-to-PS4 emulation path. They are relevant only when RPCS3 is already running on a PC.
6. Treat audio glitches as a timing symptom until proven otherwise
Crackling, cutting out, or robotic audio can appear alongside uneven emulation timing. During each test, note whether audio changes at the same moment as frame pacing or whether it fails independently. If SPURS, focus state, or priority changes alter the symptom, record that relationship; do not claim that the workaround permanently repairs audio.
- Audio and video hitch together: compare the baseline and one-variable tests again.
- Audio fails while video remains smooth: preserve the exact build, renderer, and reproduction steps when reporting the issue; the cited report does not establish a universal audio setting.
- The problem occurs only after changing several options: restore defaults and repeat with one change at a time.
7. Handle crashes and device-lost errors conservatively
- Return per-game settings to their defaults.
- Reproduce the crash on the current official build and record the exact point of failure.
- Compare the game’s compatibility entry and status for the verified game ID.
- Only then retest one documented experiment, such as SPURS
2or3, if the original stutter is still present.
Do not add undocumented hacks simply because a crash followed an emulator update. A crash after a build change can indicate a regression, a game-specific incompatibility, or an interaction with a local configuration; the available issue evidence does not identify one universal cause.
What the RPCS3 regression report actually establishes
The official issue tracker records “Heavy stutter in God of War 3 [BCES00510] from build 0.0.28-15404 onward.” The report says the stutter disappeared when the RPCS3 window was unfocused and that SPURS values of 2 or 3, or a process-priority change, helped on a weak six-core CPU. Later comments report that the problem still occurred on build 0.0.40-19400.
Those details establish a build-related regression report and a set of diagnostic experiments. They do not establish a guaranteed fix, a specific Xbox configuration, or reliable performance for every CPU and GPU. If your result differs, preserve the build number and hardware details rather than silently generalizing the report.

Understand RPCS3 compatibility labels
RPCS3 classifies games by observed state, including Playable, Ingame, Loadable, and Nothing. The label belongs to the exact game-ID entry and media represented in the compatibility database. It is not a promise that every revision, dump, renderer, or computer will behave identically.
- Playable: the entry has reached the project’s playable classification under its recorded conditions.
- Ingame: the title runs, but significant problems may remain.
- Loadable: the software loads without meeting the higher classifications.
- Nothing: the entry does not currently reach a usable state.
Use the status to set expectations and to choose a sensible baseline. Do not use a status for the PS3 original as evidence that the PS4 remaster runs on Xbox Series X.
A separate Windows option for the PS4 remaster
The gow3_pc project documents an unofficial Windows port of the PS4 remaster. It runs the game’s x86-64 code on a PC, uses Vulkan for graphics, and requires the user’s legally obtained CUSA01623 v1.02 dump.
This is a distinct PC-native route, not an Xbox Series X emulator fix and not an RPCS3 configuration. Before attempting it, verify that your Windows system can run the documented build and that your game dump matches the required CUSA and version. The ownership requirement matters: obtain and use the dump legally, and do not treat someone else’s files as a substitute.

- Game title, edition, game ID, and release media.
- RPCS3 build number, renderer, CPU, and GPU.
- Whether the emulator window was focused.
- SPURS value and process-priority state.
- Where the symptom occurred and whether it affected video, audio, or both.
- Whether the result was a stutter, an audio glitch, a crash, or a device-lost error.
Change one variable per run, restore defaults after an unsuccessful experiment, and keep the original baseline. This method distinguishes a build regression from a local setting and avoids presenting a temporary improvement as a solved problem.
Common mistaken fixes
“RPCS3 runs the remastered PS4 version.”
It does not. RPCS3 targets PlayStation 3 software. The PS3 original and PS4 remaster are different binaries and different compatibility targets.
“An Xbox accessory will stop the crackling.”
No cited evidence connects a headset, external drive, or other Xbox accessory with this platform limitation or the RPCS3 regression. Accessories cannot add PS4 emulation to Series X.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The latest build guarantees the issue is gone.”
The report notes the stutter from build 0.0.28-15404 onward and later comments still observing it on 0.0.40-19400. Build changes are worth testing, but they are not proof of a universal resolution.
“A compatibility label applies to every release.”
RPCS3 status is game-ID and media specific. Confirm the exact entry before applying its label to another edition.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the target is the PS4 remaster on Xbox Series X: the missing emulator path is the issue, not a hidden performance option. For the PS3 original on PC, stop after a clean baseline and the documented one-variable experiments if crashes persist or no repeatable improvement appears. At that point, report the exact build, ID, hardware, renderer, focus state, and reproduction steps instead of adding undocumented tweaks.
The practical decision is therefore straightforward: use Xbox Series X only for releases included in its curated backward-compatibility catalog; use RPCS3 to investigate the PS3 original on a PC; or evaluate the separate Windows port when you specifically need the PS4 remaster and can meet its stated dump and system requirements.
