UniKey can let you use a phone as a door credential, but only with compatible access-control hardware and after an organization administrator grants you access. The BlueKey app, for example, is specified for BlueKey SR2 Readers; installing an app by itself does not convert an ordinary deadbolt into a smart lock.

What UniKey replaces—and what it does not

UniKey describes its platform as a way for lock and access-control manufacturers to provide mobile credentials. Depending on the supported system, a phone credential can take the place of a physical key, card, or fob for entry. That is different from replacing the lock itself: the door needs compatible reader or access-control hardware, installed and configured for that credential system. UniKey’s platform overview describes its manufacturer and access-control partnerships.

So, if you are asking, “Can I unlock my door with the UniKey app?”, the answer is yes only when the door’s system supports the specific UniKey credential you have been issued. The available BlueKey documentation identifies BlueKey SR2 Readers, not arbitrary residential doors or deadbolts.

Which hardware and entry methods are documented?

UniKey lists mobile credentials delivered through Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Bluetooth, and names products including SR5, AccessIQ, SR3, PDK Touch io, and Verroo Smart Strike. These are examples of products in the UniKey ecosystem, not a guarantee that every listed product works with every app or door.

The BlueKey Google Play listing says the BlueKey app is for use with BlueKey SR2 Readers, including in offices and other facilities. It describes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) credentials that can be used by presenting a phone like a card or, where configured, leaving it in a pocket. Those entry options describe the BlueKey system and should not be assumed for all UniKey-powered products.

How access is set up

For BlueKey, access is managed by the organization rather than granted simply by downloading the app. UniKey’s BlueKey end-user guide says an organization administrator grants access; the user then downloads the app and accepts the mobile credential.

  1. Confirm the door’s system. Ask the building or access-system administrator whether the reader is a BlueKey SR2 or another specific supported system.
  2. Request a credential. The organization administrator must grant access for the relevant doors.
  3. Install the correct app and accept the credential. Follow the administrator’s instructions and the current app listing for supported phone and operating-system requirements.
  4. Test entry and ask about fallback access. Confirm how to enter if your phone is unavailable, discharged, or unable to connect. The available BlueKey material does not establish a universal mechanical-key fallback.

The guide lists iOS 10.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later with BLE peripheral mode, but these are legacy requirements. Check the current app listing and the documentation for the actual reader before relying on them.

Phone credential versus physical key

Consideration UniKey mobile credential Physical key, card, or fob
Hardware Requires a compatible UniKey-powered reader and configured access system; BlueKey specifies SR2 Readers. Requires a lock or reader that accepts that particular key, card, or fob.
Issuing access For BlueKey, an organization administrator grants access and the user accepts the credential. Who issues it and how access is changed depend on the lock or access system.
Phone and wireless needs BlueKey describes BLE entry. The phone and system must support the configured method. No phone or Bluetooth is needed to present a physical credential.
Internet after setup A 2017 UniKey SR2 administrator FAQ says accepted credentials can be stored on the phone and used offline; that historical statement is specific to the FAQ’s SR2 system. Internet requirements depend on the lock or access system; the available documentation does not establish a universal rule.
Sharing and revocation The BlueKey listing says eKeys can be shared or revoked remotely, subject to the system’s configuration and permissions. Replacing or collecting a physical key, card, or fob may be necessary; procedures vary by system.
Fallback if unavailable Not established as universal for BlueKey; ask the administrator what alternative entry method is supported. A physical credential can serve as the entry method when available and accepted by the lock.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What the available security and offline information establishes

A UniKey SR2 Administrator FAQ (AN1005), dated 2017, says that an accepted credential is stored on the mobile device and can be used without an internet connection. The same FAQ describes AES-128 encryption with a PKI implementation. These are historical statements from UniKey documentation about SR2, not an independent security assessment and not evidence that every current UniKey product uses the same design. See the 2017 SR2 Administrator FAQ.
