Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes. Keep one OBS-to-YouTube encoder session running and switch between two OBS scenes, each containing its own prerecorded video. The scene changes happen inside the outgoing OBS stream; they do not require ending the YouTube broadcast and starting another one. Whether a particular transition is gap-free depends on the files and configuration, so rehearse it before going live.
Set up two scenes for separate recorded videos
- Create the scenes: In OBS, add one scene for each clip. Separate scenes are useful when clips need different layouts or you want to choose when to switch.
- Add each video: In each scene, add a Media Source and select the corresponding local video file. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes supported media playback controls, including looping, restarting when active, and hiding after playback ends.
- Choose playback behavior: Decide whether a clip should restart when its scene becomes active. Check the Media Source controls before broadcasting; enabling “Close file when inactive” can cause a short reload period when you show that scene again.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, configure OBS to use them, and start the encoder session. The YouTube encoder guide explains this workflow. Keep the session running while you switch OBS scenes; stop sending content from the encoder when the broadcast is finished.
- Rehearse the switch: Test privately or unlisted. Check the picture, sound, and whether each clip restarts as intended. The documentation describes the controls but does not guarantee seamless transitions for every file, computer, or configuration.
Use a playlist if the videos should play in sequence
If you want multiple files to play sequentially without choosing a scene for each one, add OBS’s VLC Video source instead. It supports a playlist with loop and shuffle options, but VLC must be installed and available to OBS. OBS documents that the source stops when it is not visible and restarts when visible by default, so review its visibility behavior if scene changes may hide it. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Choose scenes or a playlist
| Consideration | Separate OBS scenes | One VLC Video playlist |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Clips need different layouts or operator-controlled scene changes. | Files should play sequentially from one source. |
| Playback control | Each scene can have its own Media Source behavior. | The playlist offers loop and shuffle options. |
| Visibility behavior | Review Media Source restart and close-when-inactive settings. | By default, playback stops when hidden and restarts when visible. |
| Dependency | Media Source is built into OBS. | VLC must be installed and available to OBS. |
These distinctions follow OBS’s documentation for Media Sources and sources and scenes.
What to check before broadcasting
- Confirm both files play correctly in OBS and that the audio levels are suitable.
- Test the exact scene-switching and restart behavior you plan to use. A short reload may occur if a source is closed while inactive.
- Make sure you have the rights needed to rebroadcast the videos. The technical setup does not establish permission to use someone else’s content.
- Check YouTube’s rules and your channel’s eligibility separately if monetization matters. A working encoder setup does not guarantee monetization approval for prerecorded content.
How long YouTube archives a stream
YouTube’s encoder guide states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an operational threshold described in YouTube Help, not a guarantee about stream performance or a substitute for checking the current guidance for your broadcast.
