You can use it to capture images for a separate comparison workflow; you should not treat it as a documented end-to-end monitoring service.
Can Thumbalizr monitor website changes?
Not according to the reviewed Thumbalizr product and API documentation. Those pages describe requesting and retrieving screenshots, including refreshed captures on paid tiers, but do not document recurring schedules, visual-diff comparisons, change history, or alert delivery. A new screenshot request is not the same as an automated monitoring check.
For change alerts, you would need to build or use a separate workflow that schedules captures, compares images, stores results, and sends notifications. Thumbalizr may supply screenshots to that workflow, but its reviewed pages do not establish that it performs those other steps itself. See the Thumbalizr API documentation.
How to set up Thumbalizr screenshot capture
- Create an account. Thumbalizr says signup and basic API-key registration are free; its homepage says a credit card is not required for the free account. Start at Thumbalizr.
- Get your credentials. Retrieve the API key and secret from the member section. Keep the secret private; generate signed requests on a server you control rather than exposing the secret in browser code.
- Build a signed Embed API request. The documented request uses an API key, a token, and query parameters such as the target URL and capture mode. The token is an MD5 digest of the query string followed by the secret. URL-encode the target URL and other parameters as required by the documentation.
- Choose capture settings. Set only the options you need, such as output width, image format, JPEG quality, screen or page sizing, delay, viewport dimensions, or browser country. Limits vary by tier.
- Inspect the response. The API documents screenshot status values
QUEUED,OK, andFAILED, along with generated-time and error headers. Account for queued work rather than assuming every request returns a finished image immediately. - Request a fresh image when needed. The documentation says paid tiers can pass a new
timestampvalue to generate a new thumbnail; the Free tier does not support timestamp refresh. This is a way to force a new capture, not a schedule or change alert.
Thumbalizr lists libraries and integrations for Python/Django, Ruby/Rails, PHP, Perl, and Template Toolkit. Its library functions can generate a URL, download an image, and wait for a screenshot to be ready. See Thumbalizr plugins and libraries for the available integrations.

What capture options and tier limits does Thumbalizr document?
The following limits are shown in Thumbalizr’s API documentation. They describe the tiers as documented there; verify the live plan before depending on a particular limit.

Its footer is marked © 2007–2022, and the displayed prices have not been independently confirmed as current checkout prices, so treat them as figures shown on that page rather than guaranteed current offers.

Does Thumbalizr take full-page screenshots?
Full-page capture is documented for Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The Free tier is screen-only. The demo page describes the same broad distinction: Free is screen-sized, while the paid tiers offer full-page or screen captures; its descriptions also say Gold and Platinum support larger browser dimensions and custom delay. Can I choose the browser size or country?
Yes, within tier limits. Free and Silver are documented at 1280×1024. Gold and Platinum allow larger configurable browser dimensions, up to the width and height ranges listed in the API table. The documentation lists US and Germany as supported country parameter values and says to contact Thumbalizr about other locations.

Using screenshots as part of a monitoring workflow
If you want to build monitoring around Thumbalizr, treat capture and monitoring as separate components. A practical workflow needs a scheduler to request captures at your chosen interval, storage for the last accepted baseline and new images, a comparison step, and a notification channel. You will also need rules for noisy changes such as rotating banners, timestamps, ads, or personalized content. Thumbalizr’s reviewed pages do not specify a built-in scheduler, image-diff method, history retention, or alert channels, so select and verify those parts separately.
- Choose a consistent viewport, country, and capture mode; differences in those inputs can look like website changes.
- Decide whether each run should explicitly force a fresh capture. Thumbalizr documents timestamp refresh on paid tiers, but not on Free.
- Handle queued and failed captures distinctly from genuine page changes by checking the documented status and error headers.
- Set your own comparison threshold and review process so minor rendering noise does not trigger misleading alerts.
